Don't need anything fancy. Not going on safari or flying overseas. Something to protect the rifle from dings on rides in the car to the local range or rides on the ATV to my back yard range at home. Been looking at some soft cases but not sure how well a soft case would protect a scoped rifle.

I have used this tactical rifle case from MidwayUSA for my scoped ARs with good amount of padding and stiff outer wall construction for scope protection - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/939239907/

They also have "heavy duty" tactical rifle case - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/939143291

I also use soft case very similar to this 2 rifle case with thicker padding for greater protection - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092JBTFN3

Try Walmart. I bought a not fancy plastic rifle case there for around $15. It ain't no Pelican, but it works for transport between gun closet to gun range and back.

For $75, I'd personally think about a soft case inside one of the cheaper hard cases for maximum protection.

I work about 5 minutes from Plano's outlet store, so I can get their Pelican-wannabe All Weather cases for not much more than $75 as well. I'm kinda OCD about protecting my rifles, so I only use all weather style cases.

If you bump up to about $100, SportsmansGuide has these, definitely a grade above tha standard cheaper hard cases.

Cheap hard cases don’t typically protect a scoped rifle much better than a soft case. Cheap plastic hard cases will typically bulge enough within short time to allow the firearms to slip around - especially bouncing on an ATV - and find a hard stop against the plastic sidewall, meaning there is effectively NO PADDING between the firearm and its loading surface… clamshell hard cases with egg foam need to be laid on their side to be transported on an ATV. Otherwise, you need to buy a case with 3 piece foam design to carry the case standing on edge.

This rifle has spent a few years riding around in this Plano “gun slinger”. I don’t remember where it came from so I can’t be certain the super soft liner inside is original or if someone added it but the wood and metal of the rifle/shotgun I keep in it are still in the condition they were in when I first started using it. Also stays dry in the rain.

I don’t know anything about the inside of the Kolpin stronghold XL but I think it will probably be the next gun boot purchase for me. As they can hold a scoped AR and are one piece, the end doesn’t remove, rather is on a hinge that just drops. Less parts to fiddle with.

The Stronghold case has a liner inside. It seems to do an OK job of protecting a rifle. I've had mine in place on my UTV for about 10 months and it has worked well so far. It's more convenient than the old style two piece case as shown in your photo but it may not be as weatherproof as the old style is. I haven't had mine in rain yet.
The rubber latch on the Stronghold case is likely the weak link but mine has held up so far. So far I like my Stronghold case.

Getting back to my previous post, the green canvas cases that Midway has on sale for $29 are also excellent cases. I am VERY pleased with mine. It's better quality than most of my other soft cases and well worth the $$$.

The boot type case @jmorris shows above is about as cheap as it gets to relatively well protect a firearm on an ATV, but this type of cases generally suck for any other portage. I rode a few thousand miles with my rifle on my bike several years ago when my only vehicle only had 2 wheels.

You must play the piano like me, if they make you go out to the garage to play. :)

My Koplin branded one from '99 had that exact padding inside. Its still in great shape. Could use a bit more padding imho. That stuff is pretty airy and compresses a lot.

Forgive me. I appreciate everyone's advice here but I didn't do what I said I was going to do. Spent more than $75.00. I started looking at my old flimsy plastic hard cases (Doskocil) and my cheap flimsy soft cases and decided I wanted something a little beefier and a bit more quality. Had enough Cabela's Club points built up to get this single rifle Pelican V770 Vault for $90.00. Well worth the extra money.

That's what I use, good choice.

Good choice, sometimes it's worth spending just a little more.
