When I get bored from time to time, I like to play a good first person shooting game. War, Cops, whatever, just as long as it's fun, not too easy, not TOO hard, and realistic. Any suggestions? I've played Both Max Paynes. That's about it. Anyone here play?

The Tom Clancy games are fun. Can be rather challenging, and are about as realistic as video games can get. I just got my dad an XBox for XMas, and got him the just released Trilogy pack that comes with them and Splinter Cell. They are a bit more challenging on the console, what with having to use 2 thumbsticks to aim instead of a mouse, but it's still an awesome game. You can find both GR and R6 with all their expansions for like 20-30 bucks for the PC.
For more of a game type feel, there's the Battlefield series, Far Cry, Doom3, and Half-life (and half-life 2 just came out.)

I (tried) to order both NRA Varmint Hunting and Accuracy Shooting from Speedco Shooting Sports. They are saying they are the most accurate shooting sims out there. Even has some kind of reloading sim in it too. They were talking about having to break in the barrels, watch for throat erosion, all kinds of realistic issues. (It didn't like my card online for some reason, so I will have to give them a call to order them.)

Call of Duty: WWII first person shooter. Lots of fun and very involving due to the pacing and sound track. Availabe on PC and console platforms. Online playable even over dial-up.

Halo: SciFi FPS. Orignally on XBox, but availabe on PC.

Up coming: Brothers in Arms. Another WWII FPS, but from the demo flic actual squad based tactics.

Half-Life 2 and Far Cry are my favorites, and I also have both Varmint Hunter and Accuracy Shooting from Speedco Shooting Sports. Good stuff! :)

I like the medal of honor series, and of course both Max Paynes were really fun. I just finished Doom 3, if you like a gory sci-fi shooter it cannot be beat.

Half Life 2 - Very very good game.
Doom 3 - Playing it now. Also quite good.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assualt - Finished "Spearhead" expansion, playing "Breakthrough" expansion now.
Counter Strike: Source
Day of Defeat: Source - Should be quite good. When ever it comes out.

I'm installing Medal of Honor: Pacific Assualt right now. Got it for Christmas. :)

Day of defeat is out. You ned hl1 to run it.

DoD Source isn't out yet though. That's for HL2.

Get Half-Life! It's not realistic but it IS fun, and is possibly the most modded game ever. You can play the Specialists/Action Half-Life/The Opera, if you feel like getting a little John Woo. And DoD is the second best WWII game ever. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault being the best. Got a good computer? Try MOH: Pacific Assault. Oh, and Max Payne 1+2, of course. And if you want to play the most realistic mod ever, get Unreal Tournament(Not 2003, just UT) and download this\.

I'll recommend Battlefield Vietnam even though I don't particularly like it. Everyone else seems to though. Wierdos. :D

Half Life 2 - If your computer can handle it, it's an amazing game.

Call of Duty - Great multiplayer and single player.

GTA: Vice City - Gratutious violence fun

Soldier of Fortune II was good. It is an older one so it won't be expensive.

If you like shooting AK's and M-16's you'll like it!

If you have a high speed internet connection, look to download the demo for free.

well...

I think Battlefield 1942 is a blast. several expansion packs, optional online play, historic battles, etc. its a hoot.

So am I the only one who found Doom 3 lacking? Half Life 2 was way too short. I was having a great deal of fun, and then, its over. Just like that.

Call of Duty and the United Offensive expansion are quite a bit of fun, when you just want to run around blowing stuff up.

Operation Flashpoint: Resistance is one that I still enjoy playing, but it is a bit involved for a "shooter".

Lots of people found Doom3 lacking. It was pretty formulaic, in that the monsters appeared more or less the same way, from the same places most of the way through the game. As a gamer, I ended up just adapting to where I knew the monsters would be*, and it sucked. A good game won't let you adapt like that.

*Basically, run at top speed down a corridor, and run backward, and the monsters appear in front of you, run up to their face, 1-2 shotgun blasts, rinse, repeat. For way too long.

Best: Half Life 2, Call of Duty
Good: Medal of Honor, Far cry
Okay: Doom 3

Call of Duty is my favorite. Probably the best teammate AI of any game in single player. Multiplayer is good too, especially with the United Offensive expansion pack. COD:UO is pretty much what Battlefield 1942 would be with good weapons.

HL2 is good, but short. Not realistic at all.

CS:Source is a great tactical game, if you find a good server, but its pretty much 12 yr-olds spray-n-pray with the MP5 while talking l337 (something like that). Tires me after a while when I am trying to place good shots, and I get hit and killed by a full auto MP5 from 100 yards. Not to mention running with the scoped sniper.

DoD:Source should be awesome, but it isn't out yet.

The Specialist is great. FPS based on the Matrix, with slow time, dodging bullets, and so on. Real guns, too, not fantasy things. Raging Bull kicks butt.

America's Army is good, but expect to out some time into training before you can play multiplayer. And watch the friendly fire. Then again, it does have one awesome feature, and that is the fact that it is FREE.

Battlefield is great for the scenery and the vehicles, but the weapons are horrible. 3-4 shots to stop someone with a Garand is not uncommon. Bombs do almost no damage to ships.

Try Desert Combat mod for BF42. It fixes the wapons problem, and gives you more modern equipment. Same for Silent Heroes.

Oh yeah, didn't care for Doom 3. All that makes it scary is lack of lights. ANd the fact that you can't hold a guns and flashlight at the same time.

It's been said before.....

Deus Ex. You should be able to get this for about $10 online or so. It's an older game based on the Unreal engine, (meaning the graphics aren't the greatest, but it still does fairly well.)

For the guns, you have 10mm pistols (silenced and otherwise,) a 7.62mm X 51mm assault rifle, a .30-06 sniper rifle, amongst other (somewhat less realistic) weapons. While the weapons aren't all that realistic, the RKBA issues brought up in several spots are great, (try talking to a guy named Smuggler in Hell's Kitchen, New York a few times, )

Overall, it has a very entertaining story, and you can change a lot of it...you can go in blazing away (and probably not survive,) or you can sneak in and pick them off silent.

I don't have a high-end computer, so I'm kind of limited to older PC games, but I liked Duke Nukem and Quake, and I currently am playing SWAT 3 quite a bit. My favorite used to be Silent Thunder II, a game where you fly around in a Warthog killing tanks.

Half-Life 2 - best game EVER. Fairly realistic but still scifi-ish. Hey, the .357 kills with one head shot, the HK holds 18rds, the HK Subgun is pretty close to the real thing...naturally the gravity gun isn't realistic, but it is the coolest weapon ever to be in a FPS. It's even cooler than the rail gun from Quake 2.

Far Cry - also pretty realistic. All of the weapons are real (that I remember anyway), and their effectiveness is pretty accurate as well. It's also the second-best-looking game on PC (with HL2 being first, of course).

Doom3 is pretty fun, but not realistic.

Halo 2 is a good console game, but it just can't stand up to PC games because of the lack of mouse and keyboard.

Has anyone tried Cabela's dangerous hunts ?
Saw it but never played it though, it looked pretty cool .

Happy Holidays , Bill

I had a lot of fun with Joint Operations.

As a sniper, you could go prone with a Ghillie suit and be 90% invisible. You have to adjust the scope for distance, etc. I havent played it in 7-8 months, but got addicted to it before I moved.
