Good shooting games (no, not video games).

Today I went shooting with a friend, when we came up with a cool game.

We placed some boundaries, and then one of us would go into the "range" and place a clay pigeon somewhere -- with scrub oak all over, the possibilities are endless. The other person would wait by the car (the safe zone) until the other person comes back. Then the person who hid the clay would yell "GO!" and start the stopwatch. The other person, gun holstered, has to run into the "range," find the clay, and hit it.

About halfway through, we came up with a switch-up: You run out into the "range" with only one round in the chamber, and empty mag in the gun, and a full mag in a pouch/pocket. That way, if you miss it on the first shot, you have to reload -- the point of that was to learn to hit it on the first shot.

Anybody else have any fun games to try while shooting?

I have herd a good practice for hunting and such is to go out somewhere with a lot of room, and take turns throwing tin cans out a varying distances and then taking turns shooting them. The idea is to learn to shoot at improvised distances and angles. Hope to find somewhere to try this with my new .22 cal.

We taped up a deck of cards to a big sheet of posterboard and played poker. It is easy at close range, but try it at 20-25 yards, things start to get interesting if your trigger control is off. (At distance you need a spotting scope.)

Lots of games I play with friends involving time and targets. Anything with a stopwatch makes things interesting. :)

Balloon racing. This works well out in the west desert when it is windy, which is always. Requires a good backstop. Get two shooters, guns holstered, at the line. Wind blowing down range. Have a third person let go of two balloons. Different colors. Hit your balloon before the other guy. We did this several times at Utah TFL get togethers. It was loads of fun. I think I'm still Utah Balloon Racing champion. :)

Last man standing. This works with a bunch of shooters. Each shooter gets a water bottle or clay pigeon. Place those bottles downrange. Far enough out to be a difficult shot. All of the shooters stand at the line. Then at the count of 3, everybody shoots at somebody elses bottle. After everybody fires a shot, anybody whose bottle was hit is out. Repeat until you have the last man standing. This one is fun because everybody shoots at the good shooter's bottles first.

a good clay game is to have two or three throwers with those little hadn throwers paint some of the clays green or some other color then their normal orange and throw mixed batches. pick which color you're supposed to shoot so the shooter has to identify whic color to shoot and only shoot that color. It sounds simple but if you get like 4 guys throwing and like 3 colors it gets interesting. no faster way to go through a case of 12ga

Shooting clay birds on the fly with .45 snakeshot is a blast. Have your buddy surprise you with a hand thrower.

A lot of these sound like a lot of fun.

Is there a website that tells of some games? Is there some other source I'm missing? I KNOW people play games when they shoot... I wonder why we don't hear many of them. Especially when so many of these sound so fun!
