good states for RKBA and homeschool

I just read the other day that Alaska is probably the best state for home schooling. Couple that with the fact that we are close to the top for being gun friendly and we have a winner.

go west YOUNG MAN!!!

I'm 46, and I know its not that old, but it sure feels good when somebody calls me 'young'. Ahhhhh. Ughhhhh, Ohhhhhh, Owwwww.

Not so young.

All good suggestions. Employment is a biggie too, for obvious reasons. Any body know some good places for a hydrologist/ stormwater engineer?

And yes, I'd like fries with that.

I'll second the motion for Kansas. There is a very large and active homeschool community in Wichita and the surrounding area... homeschool sports teams, robotics teams, arts & music activities, etc. Pretty decent gun laws too... we're working on making them better. Silly governor, but she's going to D.C., so hopefully she'll stay there.

All that being said, there's a lot of other good choices, namely Idaho, Alaska, or Montana...

I vote GA from experience. no registering, not lots of laws against guns, conceal permit is only 40 bucks, and homeschooling isn't bad at all.

Florida is pretty good on both counts, with the exception of no OC. But it is shall-issue for CCW, and it is against state law to create a registry of gun owners. You can keep weapons in your home and your car without a CCW.

There are over 1000 homeschooling families in my county, and dozens of very active homeschooling groups for field trips, park days, P.E. and sports, socializing, and group co-op classes. The local Books-A-Million has a homeschool kids' book club that meets twice a month. The skating rink and the bowling alley have homeschool days every month. Homeschoolers who want to take college courses before they have graduated HS get free dual enrollment at the community colleges (they have to pay for textbooks, but that is all.)

The legal requirements to homeschool are pretty easy to abide by. You have to notify the district that you are homeschooling, so they don't think your kid is a truant. You have to keep a brief log of instruction and a portfolio of work samples, and you have to have the child evaluated once a year (generally on a standardized test, by a psychologist, or by a Florida certified teacher) to ensure that he or she is making progress commensurate with his or her ability. There are scads of homeschool-friendly Florida certified teachers who are willing to do your evaluation for about $35 a year, and if you don't want to mess with that, there are also numerous "umbrella schools" who will take a small fee, collect attendance records, and free you from even that minimal level of supervision - but they are considered private schools, and you lose out on some of the benefits of being a homeschooler, such as the free dual enrollment, if you take that option.

And foreclosed houses are REALLY cheap and REALLY plentiful right now.

And the whole state is like a limerock and sand piece of swiss cheese covered in swamp, floating on underground rivers with oceans all around, impacted by tropical weather systems on a regular basis. Hydrologists and stormwater engineers are in high demand.

Alaska is tops for both. Our gun laws speak for themselves.

There are probably more home schoolers here than just about anywhere else. Especially those that live somewhat off the beaten path andthe support is exceptional.

As for employment with your particular skill set, I'd check with NOAA, the State of Alaska, and the larger municipalities.

Almost any State would be better than New Jersey.

Just stay away from California, Illinois, Mass., New York and Hawaii.

I'd second the notions of Wyoming or Texas. Neither have state income taxes and both are on the correct side of the Mississippi River and Rocky Mountains.

Wyoming! VERY freedom oriented, but even we have challenges to deal with on occasion. If you don't mind the cold, wind, and snow, or at least get used to it, then take a look. Prices in some parts of the state are spendy, others not so much. Of course, perspective is EVERYTHING. Coming from most anywhere in the upper east coast, land and housing prices out here are probably a joke. Lots of homeschoolers here, even though we have a pretty decent pub-ed school system. I have one son in Elementary school, and another who will be in a couple of years. So far, nothing to run up the flag about. Other schools could be different, hard to say. Overall, this IS a pretty damned good place to live and raise kids. The weather tends to keep a lot of folks away, and that's fine. If you can't hack it, then stay away (nothing personal, mind you). It keeps the population low and the BS out :neener: I witnessed first hand the fallout from "left-coast" flight and what it did to the Four Corners area of New Mexico and Colorado. We packed up and headed north. NEVER regretted it, not once.

You might want to seriously look into Kentucky - I'm biased :)..

RTKBA - A CCW (includes guns, auto knives & impact weapons) permit is easy to get presuming no serious problems in your past. Open carry is totally legal & not @ all unusual to see people carrying. The permit is reciprocal in something like 30 states the last time I checked. Silencers are legal & not difficult to get if you have the $.

Homeschool - we do. The ONLY thing you have to do is annually notify the local school board you are going to do it. That's all.

Don't know what you do for work however I can say for certain that it's got a very low cost of living (outside of the big cities).

Winters - we've lived in East & now far West KY.. The winters in either are nice & mild.. Lowest temp I can remember in either ,for the past 10 yrs, is -5. But that was for one night.. Here in WKY the coldest it's been the past couple of winters is 5 & that's for a very short time.

Summers get warm but not bad hot.

Lots of outdoor stuff to do & you're pretty central to the US so unless you want to get to the west coast or South FL it's not a far drive to get almost anywhere.
