I live in canada and there are a couple of firearms that I really want that are impossible to get up here.
They aren't illegal, just rare.

One that I really want is the colt WWI 1911 reproduction, such a nice gun. I know that when you get to the border with any gun, and you are a resident of canada you have to have it checked for legality and then registered and they mail it to you, but i've never done this before.
So i have some questions.

-Has anyone ever done this, living in canada?
-Is my firearms licence (canadian), passport and a piece of ID enough to purchase a gun in the states?
-How long does it take to register it? do you leave it at the border and they send it to the appropriate places?

Some info would be nice, I appreciate it.

thank you.

Here is ATF's FAQs on your situtiation. ATF FAQ

However, once in your possession, exporting the guns from the US and into Canada is going to open another can of worms.

You may want to talk to a firearms importer in Canada and see if they can acquire the guns for you.

Questar (in Canada) offers an import service. For a fee they will handle the paperwork for you. Check out their site, it explains everything.

Wow, reading that link, only americans can buy guns in america, no exceptions.

That sucks..

Questar though, I checked it out for a few minutes and they have alot of questions and answers, so if anyone else wants to read up on this check that link out. I'll have to email them and ask whats all involved, do I find the dealer and the gun that I want and tell them, or do they find the dealer and I just tell them what I want?

Anyways, thanks guys for the help.

NAFTA should have stood for North American Firearms Trade Agreement. I'd love one of those M1s on the cheap.

Resident Aliens can purchase firearms legally as well. If the link says "citizens only," the link is wrong.

I'm still a Canadian/UK citizen and I can legally purchase firearms here in the USA, there are some hoops you need to jump through to get the privilege of purchasing though...
