I live in the country. My driveway is about 100 yards long, and I have a garage with a remote control door. When I pulled into the garage today I was listening to the radio and thinking about a variety of things when I heard the sound of a car, looked in the rearview mirror and saw a large car directly behind me, just outside the garage, blocking me in.

Fortunately it was just a neighbor wanting to give me some news, but I realized I had been completely oblivious to the fact that he was following me down the driveway. I had a handgun in the glove box, which I then realized was locked.

If it had been a hostile situation I would have been in trouble. Usually when I'm driving around I put on an ankle holster, but for some reason I didn't do it today. In short, I made several mistakes and it was a good reminder not to go into Condition White.

Tonight, my friend related a situation close to yours. He was in his garage, running a vacume, when a guy walked up on him. Shook him up a little. No harm...just a wake up. Its hard to always be alert. Glad for you it was your neighbor.
Mark.

Donning Condition Orange

I was walking out of a local grocery store the other morning on my way to work. In one hand was a hot cup from Starbucks, the other held a grocery bag with some rather heavy food in it (multiple day's worth of lunch).

I found myself consciously assessing the weapons I had in hand even though there was no threat in sight. (At the hour I go to work I imagine the bad guys are headed to bed. They have a better union than I do.)

The coffee cup was just an arm motion and squeeze from becoming a not inconsiderate burn to someone's chest/face if need arose. Since I drink drip coffee with nothing to cool it it could be rather nasty for many minutes after I buy it. It would surely open someone's eyes in a rude way if I needed to use it.

The heavy bag was not a very durable but quite heavy blunt instrument in my other hand.

No, it's not as good as having one of my handguns on my hip. It's not as good as having one of my knives where I could get my hands on them rapidly. It wasn't as good as having a rifle or shotgun. It was a realization that I was not unarmed because my brain was ready to rock and roll. I just needed to realize the weapons I already held and be alert.

It's things like that to remind you to do a "complacency check", I had a situation with my children present, me coming out of a deep sleep, a BG crouching around the fence in the front yard & for some reason all my firearms in the safe. I have never been so disappointed w/ myself, I had grown complacent. Never again

Do the check !
