For how long were you talking to the people outside cmp?
~15 minutes.
They had a decent chance to figure out that you had(or probably had) an m1. If you forgot to lock your car when exiting it (because u wernt leaving it) they had the opportunity to swap.
This is the most likely answer.
RyanAnchors,
No. I don't go to Vegas. Bad mojo...
Old Shooter:
Inside job, mayby the wife is even in on it. She has spare car keys and knows some of your shooting buddies, right?
Yes, she knows the guys at the range in Augusta, but we really don't know anyone here in Savannah.
1) Not her personality & 2) I don't believe she has the knowledge or had time to pull it off.
Sport45:
Was the wood mounted on the rifle? Why did you take it off (and reinstal the front sight and all) before taking the pictures?
Yes the wood was on the rifle. I took the stock off because I don't trust it. When I can I'm replacing it (or if this is a joke, put the original back on when he/she/it gives it back). I also put all the metal back together so nothing gets lost.
I was shocked by the picture. My wife would tan my hide if I put a greasy milsurp on one of her bedspreads...
Thanks, she just noticed.
I was VERY careful...
Mal H:
Were your windows or sunroof cracked in the hot Alabama heat while you were inside?
No. Besides I was in Dallas area for three weeks. Aniston wasn't hot after that.

What was the nature of the conversation you had with the other guys in the CMP lot before they opened? Did you talk about your M1?
Nope, I only mentioned the ammo that I had with me to return. I bought Greek HXP and they gave me LC1955. I exchanged it. I bought Greek not Lake City, and since the CMP's been good to me, I didn't want to cheat them.
When was the last time you know for absolute sure that the M1 had the new CMP stock on it? A quick glance while loading up might not have recognized the difference, especially if you were tired from driving or were used to seeing your old furnature more than the new. I'm guessing that this happened b4 you even set out on the trip.
I pulled the rifle out of its CMP hardcase, and visually inspected it for rust. I got a very detailed look at it, and I'm 100% sure the night before I left I had the original stock.
how the heck can you sleep in a car in a parking lot.
2 pillows, fully reclined seat, and an M1911A1 within quick reach.
It's really not that hard for me to nap in a car. I'm afraid that might backfire on me one day.

I suspect your new wood is on another Garand you have, and that your wires just got crossed as far as which Garand had the new stock.
I've verified the serial number 5 times now. This one is the easy one to grab out of the gunsafe. It was my "beater" gun...
Chuck Perry:
Did this rifle come with the new wood installed, or did you purchase and install it afterwards?
I bought this rifle 1 & 1/2 years ago from the CMP South Store. It's a rack grade with good metal finish, a excellent barrel (MW 1+, TE 2) and had a
hideous stock. I bought a new stock at the same time and installed it before I left. So I got a "Service Grade" for $645.00 instead of $695.00. Remember this was my shooting toy, aka "beater", not a safe queen.
I was doing errands all day today and didn't get the chance to call Aniston. After I figure out how to broach the question, I'll call them.
Anything else?
