Got a New One For You Guys: Someone Swapped My M1 Garand Stock

I say your gun is involved in a time warp. In Oct. 1945 there's a soldier wondering why the stock on his garand looks so nice now.

Well, I'm moving on. I don't expect my missing stock to return. CMP said "they'll get back to me". I swear they think I've been sniffing glue or something similar.

I got my hands on another stock out here and I'm refinishing it. Free stock is better than a $163.50 Boyd stock from the CMP. It'll take me a couple of weeks to get this done, but it'll look good.

If by some chance the stock returns (which I doubt) I want the other stock (which I don't trust) handy to beat the :cuss: out of who ever did this. And besides, I'll have that first stock all ready for another Garand! :D

It's been hotter than blue blazes here in the Dallas area for the past 40 days. As in over 100 for 39 days or some such. Instead of calling BS, I'll just say the heat must have had something to do with it. :)

At least the OP was smart enough to leave. This is my 44th summer here and I've just about lost all hope.

I think that "new" stock is a great candidate for the dishwasher treatment, followed by some loving light sanding followed by many coats of RLO/BLO/Tung oil.

I agree with others who suggest just refinishing the "original stock". Or should I have written "stock stock"? I take good stock in stock stocks.

EXIF data on all the photos matches.

did you check the back of your safe for the other stock?

Well, according to this we now have evidence that the OP is lying. I didn't even think to check EXIF.

OP, when you take a picture. There is extra data recorded in the JPG file aside from the image. One of the posters here used this to confirm that all three pictures were taken and uploaded on the same day.

In short, you're busted. :]

I think he took a picture of his old photo, then uploaded it to computer. Hence the date.

What reason could someone want to swap the furniture on a rifle? Because someone wanted a newer looking rifle.

Stealing the whole thing, would make that rifle traceable at some point, because every stolen fire arm is entered into a database, that is compared to bullets, and firearms used in the commission of a crime. I know this, because the bullet that came through my window, has been successfully tied to a firearm used in 4 other shootings in my city.

Why steal the furniture, and not the whole thing? Perhaps the **** was trying to steal the barrel, and screwed up the exchange, by leaving you with the right barrel for your rifle, instead of giving you his. Either way, this story is about as bizarre as it could get.

Steal the barrel?
Ya right, thief carrys a work bench, receiver vice and barrel wrench with him.
This is the freaking Twilight Zone

Congratulations, RyanAnchors, you unjustly tried to defamed me and made yourself look like an idiot. Think before you type.

I took the SD card that has my saved insurance documentation, copied the two relevant pictures from that card onto my desktop, and then cropped and uploaded those two pictures to photobucket. Go back to the previous post with the printed picture on my laptop (#29) and you'll see the actual picture size. I do not have those files stored on a computer that has access to the internet. When I access them, I deactivate my wifi card (laptop) or disconnect the LAN line (tower). I then took the pictures of the other stock and uploaded those to photobucket.

I have been honest with everyone the whole time. I do not appreciate the unjust attack on my character.

Look man I know its weird, but if you are honest then what happened, happened. there's no going back. But you CAN get decent wood put back on the rifle, and learn a lesson or two.

do you wear a tin foil hat while doing all this also? seems like overkill to not be on interent while uploading pictures. i honestly still do not believe this story and do not understand your picture uploading procedure. is someone hacking your computer just waiting to get your gun pictures?

Very few people know what firearms I actually have. I've been the victim of identity theft as well, so I'm a little overcautious.

Sorry man. I was going off the other poster saying the EXIF data matched, but didn't check it myself. The moderator just confirmed that they don't match, so I apologize.

However, I didn't call you any names, nor was I rude in my post. So I think it would be appropriate for us to just lower the "tone" of the whole discussion.
The EXIF data doesn't match, so I apologize.

Sell the old wood and buy a new walnut finished stock for $109.95 or unfinished $99.95 or birch for $60.00. Still cant believe someone would steal a cheap stock and not the rifles or rifle parts. Would have been alot faster and easier to take a bolt, op rod and trigger assembly and parts are worth alot more, makes no sense

The date/time EXIF info in the jpeg depends on having set the camera's clock correctly. I never bother with it.

What you need to worry about with some new cameras is the built in GPS that puts your coordinates of where the photo was taken in the jpeg! Enter them into Google Earth and thieves have an instant roadmap!

That's why I use an older digital camera. No GPS data.

RyanAnchors, I also apologize for my comments. It was out of anger. If there's one thing I take pride in is my integrity and honesty, and as everyone witnessed, I will defend if wronged. Sorry once again.

Man it's wired to post while on Interstate 20 between Birmingham & Tuscaloosa. Technology rocks!

One assumes I know how to edit out EXIF data, let alone check its validity.
