Hi guys,

I'm new to the board. I just bought a new Walther P22 at a gun show over the weekend. I was looking for a gun that would be able to accurately dump and imense amount of lead into any intruder and this gun just looks so cool as well.

My friend suggested a 12 gauge shotgun, but I know I can shoot a little 22 more accurately than a shotgun. Plus, I was thinking it would be hard to maneuver around the halls with a huge shotgun in my hands. So with the 22 holding 10 rounds compared to a shotguns 7 rounds, and adding the fact I can shoot it more accurately and maneuver better with it, this seemed to be the most logical choice. Thoughts?

And any suggestions on some home defense ammo for this bad boy? I can't imagine any intruder being able to survive the 10 shots I can put on target in a matter of seconds, but buying some quality ammo couldn't hurt.

Thanks for any help.

Chris

By the way, you just stated on an internet forum for any future defense you now do not have, that you planned on not defending yourself, but instead you planned to put alot of lead in them. I'd be careful with wording.

My friend suggested a 12 gauge shotgun

You should have listened to your friend.

uhm, ok, please look to upgrade soon, if you must use a .22 for home defense, at least use a good one, not that the P22 is particularly bad, but they have had some issues compared to a few others i can think of.

Should have got the shotgun...

Please do us all a favor and do a search for .22 and home defense

If that's the piece you're going to stick with for a while, make sure you practice rapid-fire exercises, and look into some fmj rounds to get sufficient penetration. .22 isn't my first choice by far, but use what you've got.

And any suggestions on some home defense ammo...

Any good premium SD load in 9mm, .38 Special/.357 Magnum, .40S&W, .45 A.C.P. oughta do the trick...

.....oh, wait, for a .22?

Nothing comes to mind that I would be willing to bet my life upon. YMMV.

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new acquisition:)
There is a lot of good reading/discussion here in regards to self and home defense.

In regards to you new P22:
Download the Bible and do some reading here.

Greg

P-22

Hello Chris
The P-22 is a good pistol Mine is 2+ years old and 0 problems. Just keep it clean and shoot it often than clean again.

With a .22 you want penetration as in FMJ rounds. A LEO once told me a .380 is minimum for SD. It might definately persuade some bad guys to leave you alone though.

Run.........Don't walk to the first store selling real guns......:D......The P-22 is a poor choice for a self defense weapon IMHO. A used pump shotgun would be a better choice for someone on a tight budget. I just bought a used Marlin 336 30-30 for $259. So...There are affordable options out there if you seriously want to defend your life.

If a .22 is the ONLY gun you have, I guess its better than a stick... barely.

Wait, I take that back. The stick might be better, depending on how pointy the stick might be. :D

Wow, what a way to welcome a new member to the high road....

CBAK78, as has been stated, search around for commentary on this issue of using a 22 for defense; there has been enough written pro and con on this to give a guy enough reading material for most of the night, I imagine...

In the interim, get in all the practice you can with your new acquisition.

you didn't specifically mention this in your post, but if you are new to handgunning or shooting sports in particular, check with local shops and ranges about available training programs- there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained.

Welcome to the High Road, BTW

AGREED Get in all the practice you can!!! As soon as you are able, an upgrade to a larger caliber would be best, possibly the P99, it would be the same format you are familiar with.

Get snap-caps, they work well. Scares the heck outta any intruder. They'll be screaming into the night before you can cock that hammer again.

Either this guy is joking or he has never heard of the term stopping power and how it relates to the various cartridges.

Which one is it Cbak78?

However if you are serious. I would stick with quality CCI ammo for defense. They have good quality control, powerful loads and good bullet designs. The sort of stuff you would want with real defense cartridges. I'd try some CCI stingers, velociters or minimags.

And for your sake I hope you get a real defensive gun. I love .22s but I love them for what they do best. Such as practice, and shooting small game. Not for what they do worst, which is SD. The bigger the bullet the bigger your margin for error is. With a .22 you have to have perfect shots, while the other guy is tring to kill you. I hear it's a lot harder than it sounds. :)

unless you are a women, how do you possibly fit this gun in your hand?

i fired my friends (it was for his wife) and my entire pinky (and some of my ring finger) was off the gun, hanging in the middle of nowhere, i tried some extended mag thing and it didnt help much.

New user, and no follow up
