Ragtop. Too bad you didn't get one with a turret ring for a .50 on top. Now that would have really been neat. Nonetheless, Congratulations! :)
 
OK, so this is WAY past cool.

Every real man should know how to use a pipe wrench, a chain saw, and a shotgun. You've just raised the bar.

Maybe the best part is the PTO winch. Land of no return. Shift that sucker in and let 'er rip.

I always thought an M715 would be cool. Makes that look like a toy.
 
So what do ya'll think of mounting a semi-auto M1919 in the bed, just behind the cab? (or perhaps a semi-auto M2HB, if I can scrape up another $6k)

Except for the 80 foot turning radus and completely manual steering. You really have to strongarm this thing in rough terrrain, as going into ruts and the like will yank the wheel right out of your hands.
Keep your thumbs outside the steering wheel (or else the spokes will take them off :uhoh: )

OTOH, you don't have to worry about small trees and such - just drive over them and make your own road :D

Congratulations! We have 2 6x6 trucks at our local wildland VFD. One is a 1970 that looks very similar to yours, but it has a Mercedes I-6 diesel and a 5-speed. Weird shift pattern - 4th and 5th gears are opposite of where they would normally be. That one is a neat truck, lots of power and double-clutches nicely.

The other is a 1953 with a gasoline I-6 and automatic transmission. Very noisy and slow, but can crawl up virtually any hill.

There was one with the turret ring about 17 miles from me, but the owner wouldn't let it go-not even when I offered him $8K CASH. That one did not have a winch, though. I had to have the winch. I'll likely try to find a ring later.
 
I agree - KEEP THE THUMBS ON TOP. If you hit a bump or a rut, that sucker will spin stronger than the bones...

How you gonna paint it?

BTW, I just bought a BUNCHA vinyl printing/sign stuff...

And you drove within a half-mile of my house (Wentzville, MO) without letting me admire it?

Second, seriously, what will you use it for? I think it would be cool to own, but storage for me would not be even close to realistic and once I were to get one I feel like I would be staring at it thinking "ok cool...now what?"
 
I've wanted one of these for a long, long time, but they're not exactly the easiest vehicle to come by.

eBay motors has 4 or 5 listed for sale at any given time. There is a guy who has a Unimog, with the canvas top, and stake bed for sale down the road from me. I would love to have that for summer time top down fun. Too bad the wife said no, and its a little too big to hide in the safe.

I have a couple questions...

Truck was $5,300 after tax, batteries and brake fluid ran $400 and the trip (fuel, food, lodging) ran about $850. So about $6,500 now. Still need a new master cylinder (~$100) and an air-shift transfer case ($800) before she's 100%. The current transfer case is the automatic type, and the sprag gears for forward 6x6 were damaged from the linkage being bound up on account of rust.

Second, seriously, what will you use it for? I think it would be cool to own, but storage for me would not be even close to realistic and once I were to get one I feel like I would be staring at it thinking "ok cool...now what?"

1: snow plow (got a line on a 5'x10' V-plow for $1,500)

2: hauling WHATEVER I need to; I have overloaded my half-ton trucks so many times it isn't funny. These things have a 5,000 pound payload cross country and 10,000 pounds on roads.

3: Big toy :D

Storage is not a problem on 7 acres, and finding places to park in town are simply a matter of willingness to walk a bit further.
 
I used the frame and axles off on one of those to build my swamp buggy. I cut the rear axle off, and removed the body. Mine was a '52, if I recall, and had a water tank/pump on the back when I got it.
 
I saw one of those (a 6x6, manu. uknown) that at least LOOKED pretty good, at the Knob Creek shoot in April, 01. It was mighty tempting, but two things really put a stick in my spokes.
1) The load height was very high. I'm trying to imagine loading up a tiller, or other really heavy bit of kit up to about shoulder high. Ouch.
2) The Director of Operations aka, She Who Must be Obeyed would likely have fired me on the spot, upon my return.

It would have been way cool, all but the loss of a wife.

Edit to ask: Diesel or gasoline??? I can imagine a diesel (compression ignition) running on Jet-A or kerosene or some such, but gasoline? I would have guessed it would require spark plugs. On you 10mpg, what did you fuel it with? What's the fuel capacity?
 
I wonder if you can put an air ride seat in that cab, if you can you would be a lot more comfortable and it would take a lot of the roughness out of your ride. Mount the M2HB on that rig, and you will never get cut off again.
 
Congrats on the purchase/adventure! Please give us a review on how it works out. I've always dreamed of owning one of those and using it as a farm truck.
 
That's mighty fine. I remember riding in the back of one not long ago. The joke in the Illinois NG (late 80's/early 90's) was that you NEVER wanted to get your deuce license--or you would drive gear and troops EVERY drill.


The irony and comparative to our current situation pales of course, but nonetheless--it was a good day when the local fire dept would come by as a treat and help us was the deuces if they got muddy (they did--they were right by the armory in Homewood on 187th street). Otherwise we scrubbed them with regular brooms and soap.

Many of those '10 dollar' jeeps and other toys are still around. You'll love that Deuce---thank G-d they didn't have to de-mil it prior to delivery (as they do with the --sniff-- post '66 model jeeps:( ).
 
Have fun with it. Take it down to the local courthouse and driver around and around, reving the engine. Be sure to wear your camo's. :evil:

You could always try parallel parking it on a busy street. Talk about strong-arm steering! Those rigs are always in demand for parades and the kids (and a lot of adults) love riding in them.

I drove those in the Guard for years. Always felt like a badass in it. A very slow badass, but a badass none the less. :cool:

Very very cool vehicle, but a better topic for ArmedPoliteSociety than here due to it being a vehicle post instead of a firearm-related post.
