I'm looking to pick-up an AK-47 specifically a romanian wasr-10. Here are my questions

Are these wasr-10's worth getting? My purpose for getting this rifle is to shoot them at a range really and to have one. My home defense is a shotgun.

Does wolf ammo and brown bear the only ones that make 7.62x39 ammunition and are these brands worth getting?
Thanks for the help.

I got a WASR-10 recently and just being able to look at it has been worth it for me :)

I'll shoot it sooner or later...

I'm no AK expert, but I think the WASR-10, although some of the cheapest AKs, are some of the most shoddy made. This includes Really huge mag wells that leave a lot of wobble in the mag. Another big deal iv'e HEARD about are canted sights, which will throw your aim off considerably.
If you want an AK that will go "Bang" everytime you pull the trigger than get one. But if you want an AK that you can hit something with out at 200 yards AND go bang everytime you pull the trigger, your gonna have to fork out a little more cash and get something nicer.

Wolf and brown bear are the standards when it comes to what you throw in your AK/SKS etc.

^ true. I think my front sight is canted.. I have 2 mags for mine, 1 wobbles and the other doesn't. A little electrical tape on the wobbly mag and it's good to go :)

No offense intended, but did you consider using the search function? I've probably answered AK/WASR questions in eight or ten new threads over the past two weeks - this material is starting to become redundant.

I'd go for one. Classic Arms currently is having a sale on them for $350. That's as good as you're going to get nowadays. If you don't have an AK yet, then snatch that one up. You won't regret it.

I don't have a WASR but I have a Romanian G Code AK. It's worked like a charm so far. Comparing more expensive AK's to less expensive ones, from my experience, they all do the same thing. It's really hard to go wrong when buying one.

Go got it.

i look at the wasr like a unfinish rifle... all it need is a homey touch "paint the wood" and you'll have a nice AK,

Q: does it work?
A: every time you pull the trigger

Q: Does wolf ammo and brown bear the only ones that make 7.62x39 ammunition?
A: No, there are many company that make/sell 7.62x39 ammo like Golder tiger, HotShots Remington and many others

Q: are these brands worth getting?
A: Yes, wolf, brown beer, golden tiger, silver bear..... they work great, again, you have an AK, it should be fine with any brand

BTW this is my wasr-10 with homey touches :D

Wolf brand is the only thing I've shot through mine because that is what is cheapest. I've shot thousands of rounds and I'd feel comfortable putting my life on the line with one loaded with Wolf. The gophers around here hate the stuff.

As for canted sights, there is a really easy fix for that. Look at the rifle before you buy it. If the front sight is canted....DON'T. BUY. IT.

I never understood all the whining about that. If you know it exists on these guns, look for it before you throw your money down. If it's canted, show the employee/shop owner, and tell them you'd like to see another one if they have it. I've had a few WASR's and always checked. As a result, all of mine had perfectly straight front sights.

that's true...

buying a gun is like buying a house or a car... you need to check it first, would you buy a house without bathroom? or a car without a steering wheel? so why buy an AK with Canted sight?

if you dont have an option but to buy it online...call the store and ask for one that is not canted and if it is, you'll return it.

I am considering a WASR-10 that was used for a couple of months and is selling for $275. I think I can get it for $250. I haven't examined it for canting yet but it does have a lot of mag wobble. At least it sure feels like it does not having handled an AK before. Dealer says it shoots fine. Assuming I can get it for $250 is it worth it?

"Mag wobble" is usually an aesthetic complaint UNLESS the mag wobbles so much, it causes malfunctions.

The malfunction-causing mag wobble is what you look out for.

Any other wobble is par for the course (these aren't AR15s, you know).

I recently bought a GP Wasr-10/63 for $410 new. It looked great and had straight sights. Unfortunately the rifle would fire with the bolt not completely in battery. The bolt also would ride over rounds in the mag. I returned it and bought something else. Not all Wasrs are bad though. Just be sure to buy it from a company that will give your money back if you get a LEMON! Oh....I did eventually buy a great looking used Sar-1 for $415. It is a winner......Good Luck
