Had to go to a gun shop to find some 30carbine. And of course the gun shop guys said "the government is buying up 30carbine".

Anyone else heard anything like this?

I didn't ask them to clarify if it was our government or another government, I know the little M1 is popular over seas.

Or are old 30carbines popular with law enforcement?

It seemed that 30carbine was one of the few things regularly in the largely empty walmart ammo case. Of course the second I pick up a 30carbine between me, friends and family we check 6 or 7 walmarts and there is none to be had.

Last time I heard anything kind of like this was when a local gun shop guy in Hampton virginia told my they were selling their 5.7x28 ammo for $33 a box because "it was going to be banned soon" That was 2008 and the last time I went and will ever go to that gun shop.
Went down the road and paid $24 a box at bass pro and didn't have to listen to any ones alarmist political BS.

Never put any stock in the "reasons" a counter monkey articulates for high price and/or low availability of ammo. Straight out of the rumor mill, worsened by the proverbial "telephone game".

.30 Carbine, like all other less popular cartridges, has been put on the back burner by manufacturers while they attempt to meet demand on .22 LR, 9mm, .45, .223, .308 and a few other popular calibers that every last cartridge was sold months before it was made.

I guess "the government buying it up" is just the hottest rumor these days?

That is kind of a modified version of their favorite sales pitch, "buy it now before they ban it!"

At least he didn't start talking about some think tank that wants to disarm the US and that secretly controls the government.

Or maybe the government buying up a bunch of ammo in a military "obsolete" caliber fits into both of those above statements. Who knows. I usually just put my CCW, license and credit card on the counter and ignore the non-sense.

I unconsciously did a faceplam upon reading that.

Have never seen 30carbine at any of my local Walmarts, and I've looked.

At least once, maybe twice, a bill was put up to ban 5.7 by name but thankfully it didn't passed, many of the top anti's seem to have it out for that round. During the last panic $60+ per box was not uncommon. Think I recall seeing $80 at one place and they still sold out.

I know one deputy in a rural Ca County who carried a surplus M-1 carbine as a trunk gun many years ago. I bought that gun when he retired and still have it. No others in 24 yrs in LE carry (or carried) one that I personally know about, nor do I know of any Federal agencies that issue them anymore. Just salesmanship hooey, IMHO.

Like everything else; .30 carbine has been scarce since last year, but it can be found. I saw 10-12 boxes of Remington 110 GR FMJ on the Bass Pro shelves last week for 29.99 a box/50.

And of course the gun shop guys said <<total nonsense/conspiracy theory/complete BS/wild babbling/incoherent and alarming political rhetoric/racist screed/incorrect firearm information/horrendous legal advice>> .

No. Never. Why do you ask? :D

In the mid and late 1960's the US gubbmint was basically giving away M-1 Carbines to Law Enforcement Agencies. My Dad was an Auxillery man in Florida before police standards were passed.

One night coming in late from a club meeting Dad met me at the door, his auxillery met the same night as my Chapter of the Order of DeMolay and I frequently came home after him. I was already known as a gun nut and though not driving on a real liscense yet folks would sometimes drop guns by the house for me to "look at" which usually meant I broke them down cleaned them and made sure they worked. So when he asked me if I "knew anything" about M-1 Carbines I excited ly expected to find one in my bedroom. On two old Army blankets on the floor next to my bed where the parts of 14 M-1 Carbines. The Auxillery and their advisors had broken them down and because someone had tossed in a couple of Universals they managed to get the idea that parts were not interchangeable.

The Chief detrmined that sending them all to a gunsmith would be too darned expensive so he told dad if I could get them all together and working I could borrow one indeffinately ( about eight years as it turned out when a new chief came in and noticed a carbine missing from the inventory) Needless to say I did a fast and good job though one of the neighbors thought I was "starting a war or something" what with my test firing each as I finished it.

I set aside two nice Winchester barreled actions and build them up as best I could with WRA parts where marked and "looks right" where not marked for Dad and I. The Auxillerymen where then allowed a private purchase of one gun each and Dad bought his. That new Chief came in while I was in Europe and I didn't even get to argue about the return as Dad dutifully brought it in where it did in fact go in a regular policeman's cruiser trunk.

At least in the South East in the '60's an 70's if a cop went to his trunk for a gun there was about a fifty fifty chance he would return with a winchester 94 in thutty thutty or a little M-1 Carbine.

I suspect most have been replaced by M-16 A1s as a similar program was in effect about fifteen years ago for M-16 A1s...... just without the individual buying option. A small department near here bought enough for two per employee and many have been modified with short barrel set ups and M-4 stocks. Yes, they are select fire.

I shot a fair amount of French 7.5 Carbine berdan because it was cheap and I treated it as corrosive whether it was or not but my carry ammo was either the Winchester or Remington soft point.

Dad has sworn I will get his when he no longer needs it......he seemed pretty healthy yesterday though for a guy in his 80s.....

No 30 carbine but the government is buying .300 win mag, 12 gauge .22 lr, .44 spl, .45 acp , 9mm, .308 and a bunch of others.

A fellow empty-shelf browser at Wal-Mart today told me that Obama is buying up all the .22 ammo. I said, "You mean the gummint?" and he said, "No, I mean Obama."
So there you have it. Fortunately the President doesn't use 55gr .223 because there was tons of it.

I'll sell them mine, but they won't like the price. But since they print money and spend it freely, I guess they can still afford it.

Anyone working for a gunstore talking like that kind of stuff should be taken with a grain of salt.
