Got to the range with the GP today.

Background. I took possession of one of the new 3-inch GP100s in 44 Special on January 25. It had the "issues" that have been discussed elsewhere: significant and "unsightly" gap under the front sight, as if the dovetail had not been milled deep enough; inconsistent and over-sized chamber throats. After one range trip it went back to Ruger.

Got the gun back a couple of days ago. New barrel and cylinder; front sight where it should be and throats a consistent .430. I installed a compact grip with Chig's Grip inserts and she's a beauty ...

Got to the range today with a variety of loads. The gun shot very well, but I had a hard time getting a clear sight picture. My eyes aren't what they used to be and my progressive lenses are no help at all; they'd be better if the lens was the other side up. Seriously considering having an optometrist build me a custom set of shooting glasses! My chronograph was set up at 5 yards, and the target stand at 12 yards. I shot off a table with my hands resting on a beanbag. Weather was overcast, temps around 50 Fahrenheit, light rain a couple of times. All loads used Starline brass and Winchester LP primers.

First up was 10 rounds of Missouri Bullet's 200 grain Cowboy #5 RNFP (coated) over 5.0 grains of TightGroup. This was a very pleasant load, and I was impressed by its consistency. I need to play some more with the bullet and powder; pretty sure I can tighten the group.
Average: 742.7 FPS
SD: 9.3 FPS
Min: 722 FPS
Max: 754 FPS
Spread: 32 FPS

Then I shot some of Matt's 215 grain button-nosed wadcutters over Unique, from 6.1 to 7.5 grains. Shooting only five rounds of each load was not enough to get good statistics, but it helped me get a feel for the gun. Overall, I wasn't real happy with the Unique; a lot of variability in velocity. Here are some samples.

6.1 grains Unique
Average: 882.6 FPS
SD: 17.1 FPS
Min: 863 FPS
Max: 901 FPS
Spread: 38 FPS

6.5 grains Unique
Average: 938.0 FPS
SD: 12.2 FPS
Min: 929 FPS
Max: 959 FPS
Spread: 30 FPS

7.1 grains Unique
Average: 964.6 FPS
SD: 27.9 FPS
Min: 935 FPS
Max: 997 FPS

7.5 grains Unique (I threw one)
Average: 1020.6 FPS
SD: 32.3 FPS
Min: 971 FPS
Max: 1058 FPS
Spread: 87 FPS
BNWC-75U.JPG

After that, I shot a couple of cylinders of the same bullet (215 gr BNWC) over Trail Boss. Wish I had loaded up a few more, but not much more than 5.3 grains will fit under the long BNWC.
5.2 grains Trailboss
Average: 763.8 FPS
SD: 15.9 FPS
Min: 742 FPS
Max: 784 FPS
Spread: 42 FPS
BNWC-52TB.JPG

5.3 grains Trail Boss
Average: 781.4 FPS
SD: 9.8 FPS
Min: 774 FPS
Max: 796 FPS
Spread: 22 FPS
BNWC-53TB.JPG

Interestingly, I found that when I was shooting the Trail Boss loads, I was getting a clearer sight picture. Well, the heavier Unique loads broke the fiber optic bead off the facing edge of the front sight, which gave me a sharper outline. Now I have to decide whether I am going to repair the fiber optic rod, or fill the void with black JB Weld and have done with it ... or maybe figure out how to attach a brass bead.

Bottom line. I probably won't reorder the BNWCs for a while. I'll tinker some more with the 200 grain RNFPs. I've also ordered some of Rim Rock's 200 grain DEWCs, the same bullet Buffalo Bore loads in its "Anti-Personnel" round. And I have a boatload Missouri 240 grain "Elmer K" SWCs to play with, too. Unique shoots dirty, but TiteGroup and Trail Boss seemed very clean. Lot's of options to explore!

That 6.5 gr. of Unique group looked pretty good and if you threw out that flyer , that 5.2 gr. Trailboss group was very good , nice report .

Good question. I wasn't paying the attention I should have. When I got home, there was very minor leading in the barrel; twice through with a bore snake got most of it. I probably should have checked after each cylinder, but didn't think of that; I just checked for ease of extraction and signs of pressure (none). The BNWCs seem to be well lubricated--three lube grooves, albeit narrow. The Missouri Bullets are coated; I've never noticed leading with them.

Edit: Well, I was mistaken. With a good light I can see that there is some leading from the forcing cone to midway up the barrel. I'll have to go to work on that, and next time out check the barrel after each cylinder.

let us know if you can narrow down the leading issue. that gun has potential!

Rugers are usually pretty 'functional' looking, but that is a pretty revolver . . .

That is one beautiful little revolver with that 3" barrel, and some really nice shooting to boot, I also agree to the 6.8grns of Unique as your sweet spot.

Thanks for the compliments. I really think the grips make a huge difference in the appearance. To my eye, the factory Hogue grips are oversized and ugly; with them, I think the gun has a definite "utilitarian" look. The compact Ruger grip gives a better visual sense of proportion; add a set of custom inserts and the gun begins to look a bit more "refined." And I like the size of the compact grip in my hand, even though I have large hands.

Any updates for us?

I've still not been to the range with my warrantied gun. I need to change that very soon.

Think twice before adjusting your sights for that heavier 240 gr bullet. All of my 44 Special loading is with 200 gr, which is good enough for 45 ACP but moving faster.

Any updates for us?
Nothing new to report; sorry. Last couple of range trips have been focused on building a couple of loads for my .44 Special Bulldog. The GP100 is next in line. Unfortunately, going into a busy stretch at work the next couple of weeks. Should be able to get to the loading bench in the evenings, but it will be a while before I can get back to the range.

Nice gun. I love 44 special. I have a S&W 696, Lee Horton, that is an amazing little 5 shooter. I have been eyeballing one of those new Rugers... Your review and pics are helping me make my decision easier. Thx for sharing.

Thanks for your last update with your GP100 .44 Special.

My eyes aren't what they used to be and my progressive lenses are no help at all; they'd be better if the lens was the other side up. Seriously considering having an optometrist build me a custom set of shooting glasses!

I have been thinking the same exact thing! I recently got a pair of safety glasses that have both upper and lower magnified areas to see if they might help.

I, too, have been preoccupied with other projects. I'm hoping to do a bit of shooting/testing with some factory JHP stuff soon. Honestly I'm afraid I'll be disappointed given most factory velocities.

I did recently talk to Justin at Underwood again about the keyholing issues I had with their high performance 200gr Gold Dot. He told me they'd purchased a Ruger 3" for load development and had seen no accuracy problems with this load in their new test gun. Based on this info I bought another box. Guess what? Keyholes just like the last box in the other gun. My next experiment will be this ammo in my 4" 629 to see what that does.

Any new reports? I'm really looking for as much info and opinions (pros and cons) on this gun. I'm sure this is overbuilt for a 44 Special, but I'd plan on using this periodically with heavy loads that would not be good on a S&W 696. I'm getting close to "pulling the trigger" or not, so love to hear back!

Sort of with Hoser45 on this. The forcing cone on the GP does not look much thicker, if any, than on 696s. Wonder if it can handle a 250 gr at 950-1000fps? Then again I seem to recall Dave Clements when he was doing the GP .44 SP conversions claimed they could take 1200 fps 250 gr loads albeit, I imagine, with a longer barrel.

Yes, if there are any issues with GP100 handling the HOT factory loads from Buffalo Bore, Garrett, or others, then I might as well stay with a slimmer, smaller 696 or the S&W 69 (44 mag). But there are reasons I'd rather have a GP100 over the 69 (sleeved barrel, frame lock, ect).

But also want to know anything else in general about this one from current owners.

That is one fine-looking piece of hardware. It looks like it would make a very nice forest gun.

Yep, that's the plan for this one (hence the desire to use hot loads)! N-frames and Redhawks are just a bit too large for my hands (trigger reach).
