GP100 Modifications

So I have a 4 inch blued GP100.....I kind of want to go nuts with it....So far is has a set of Meprolite night sights and a diff set of wood inserts for the grips....I love this gun but Im kind of bored and I figure it nothing really special so why not go nuts with it....i really like the balance of the old Security Six over the GP but I can find one in decent shape here....I was thinking of having the barrel slab sided or having the under lug shortened....Also I was looking at sending it to Gemini customs and having him work his magic on it....Another thing I wanted to do was have the gun re-blued... There is nothing wrong with the bluing on my gun but its not as rich and deep blue as I would like....I know some of you will say its not worth the trouble ,but sometimes I like to do stuff just because I want to be different....What do you guys think....Let me know any other ideas you might have

In my opinion, and looking at the Gemini site:

A trigger job is basic to the custom revolver.

Good sights are a help.

A factory barrel slab sided looks odd.

I don't want a ported barrel.

A half lug barrel looks good.

A nice blue job looks good, even with some handling and holster wear. But do they do bluing there?

Im not to sure on the slab side barrel either...I would rather have a half lug, and I dont know if they blue the guns but I am kinda partial to blued guns.....I am not saying I am deff lookin to send it to them ,but there sight got me thinking and brainstorming.....I am also set with the sights that I have....Does anyone have and pics of Custom GP's....Maybe with some of the stuff I mentioned....

Ruger Mods??

Each to his own, but the first thing my SuperRedHawk got was a Hogue Mono Grip. With the factory grips my middle finger felt like someone hit it with a hammer!! Mono Grip glues that Hawg Leg to my hand..

I bought Hogue wood monogrips and I really like them. I shoot better groups with them than the rubber/wood combo. I have a feeling it's because I can get a more consistent hold on the gun. The reason I prefer wood over rubber is that it is much easier to draw from a holster and make small adjustments on the grip.

If I was pulling out all the stops on my GP100 I would:

1. Have the chamber throats reamed to .358
2. Have the forcing cone recut to 11 degrees.
3. Have Bowen Rough Country rear sight installed.
4. Have chambers chamfered.
5. Have a nice new 45 degree crown cut on the barrel.

But then again, I'm a junkie for the performance side of things more than cosmetic.

No one has had any custom work done on there GP's!!! Come on there has got to be someone out there that has played around with theres....Im talking about stuff like Waywatcher mentioned. Possibly diff finishes. Maybe some barrel porting. Stuff like that...Has anyone messed around with slab siding or removing the underlug?

Here is a thought. Ruger did make a half lug blued 4 inch barrel for awhile. Its no longer made but there are used ones out there. If you can get one then doing a action trigger job, grips etc.. would make a nice package. And probably save some money. Below is my Ruger Police Six 4 inch which is similar to what I am describing.

I would like to see a change to the functional side , a picitanny style mount for a lite or a laser, maybe even a bolt on rail for the 1s already in use !!

As for me a good front site & action job , has to have the panel grips also & your set with a rugged fighting revolver !!!

I don't really think the GP100 needs any modifications to be a wonderful sixgun. I got a Super Redhawk grip assembly, with its dark laminated wood inserts, which I like. I want to try one of the Target Rear Sights from Bowen Classic Arms. One of my GP100s is currently "trying on" one a Bowen Rough Country Rear Sight, but I need to get the version with the taller sight blade for it to be right for the GP100. The one temporarily on the GP100 will go onto a different Ruger.

As for slab-siding and porting, Gemini Customs will do that work.

Some thoughts:

(1) action tune
(2) chamfer cylinder for speedloader use as mentioned above.
(3) custom wood grips e.g. Hogue, Herrett's, Badger, or if off the deep end Roy Fishpaw
(4) machine barrel for half lug or fit 1/2 lug barrel off a fixed sight gun (thinner profile)

(4a) as an alternative cut existing barrel to 2.5 - 3" and machine to take the Ruger replaceable
front sight. On one of the Ruger Forums member Iowegan had details and a picture of one
he created.
(5) polish and radius the trigger
(6) jewel sides of the hammer and trigger
(7) machine cylinder for full moon clips
(8) have gunsmith build up the thumb pad on the hammer into a wider target configuration. Jim Stroh of
Alpha Precision does this among others.
(9) convert gun to fire 10 mm. Dave Clements offers this service.
(10) add engraving to the gun.
