Hey all and thanks for poppin in.. Yeah the headline says it all. I purchased a gp100 6" stainless 357 about a year ago and its the only weapon of six that I love/ hate. At the time I purchased it used in mint cond, and the only reason I picked it up is because it was a great home defense weapon for the amount of $$. Since then Ive purchased diff grips to let it "grow on me" and still seems like just TOO MUCH Gun. Dont get me wrong its a Lifetime gun that is beautiful and makes a Fun Range Gun, but Ill be honest it doesnt leave the safe much because I have other home defense options. I dont hunt and Im in an urban city, the issue is that in a SHTF situation that is alot of weapon to lug around if I need to "Bug Out". The only holster option is a cross draw shoulder harness. So I can have it sold in no time for a $50- $80 Loss. I hope Im doing the right thing. Its the first of my babies I have to let go, but I must find a platform that works for ME... Have any of y'all felt the way I feel now??, Im thinkin Ill feel a whole lot better once I get a new SP101 in my hand:D:D

I feel the same way about the GP100. It's a fantastic service revolver in a world where service revolvers aren't in much demand. The SP101 doesn't soak up the recoil of hot .357 like the GP100 does, but since you don't use it as a range gun a nice 3" SP101 will fill your needs much better. I still wish they made the Security Six, it was just right.

An SP is my first line CCW & defensive weapon as it's small enough to have at all times but large enough to shoot well. For your situation as described I think you're making an excellent choice.

I love my SP101. Yeah, the hottest factory loads sting a bit with the stock grips but I'd never want to shoot those without ear protection anyway. For self defense I'll use .38 spcl +p.
The 3" barrel size is about perfect for me for use backpacking in NM or CO.

I looked at the GP100 and came to the same conclusions as previous posters. I got the SP101 instead and am very happy with it. I switched to Hogue rubber grips because it will serve as a home defense gun and will not be carried.

Why not use a SP101 for the Range? I use my 2" DAO SP on the Range. I don't practice with screaming hot loads. I practice with 125G. 357 JHP reloads at a little over 1000fps. Actually the Corbon S.D. loads I carry don't feel all that much different. I guess when you enjoy practicing with a LCR 357 you don't mind recoil. These are my favorite carry and practice guns.

Terrible decision! You'll live to regret it someday. Not that the SP is a bad purchase but everyone should own both of those fine revolvers.

If the gun is for home defense only, why in the blue hell would you choose a sp101 over a gp100? One less shot, slower followup shots, heavier trigger.

The sp101 is the smallest real 357 for carry. As a hd weapon, it is outclassed.

I like the sp101 and carry it occasionally, but i really like the gp100,especially in the 4 inch barrel. The 3 inch gp100 is one of my favorites of all the revolvers. To sum up the sp will go before either of the gps'.

My 6" GP100 is one gun I'll never part with! It is, however, a big kids toy that I use just for blasting handloaded ammo at cans, stumps, mud puddles, golf balls etc.
I never could imagine trying to carry it in anything other than a western style drop leg holster. I do plan on buying a set up for it, but just something to wear when I'm shooting cans so I don't have to set the pistol down soo much.

I think you did the right thing since you need something you can carry.
You'll feel a lot better after you get your SP101 out to the range.

By the way, I have a SP101 too and I think you'll love it.

I have talked to Concealment Solutions, and he is going to make me a Black Mamba IWB for it with a Speedloader holder on it.

DeMilled- I made two holsters for my GP100. One a "gunfighter" rig, the other for my regular belt, both with leg ties. The short rig works great on the tractor and for most practical carry considerations, but I sometimes strap on the gunfighter for some draw and blast or practice with the speed loaders.:D

Nothing wrong with refreshing the arsenal occasionally. Next time you want a six shooter, look at 4" barrels.

If I had to cull the herd, the 6"er's would be the first to go. The 4"er's (GP, L Frame or K Frame) would the the absolute last to go.

I came just this close to getting into the hobby of making my own holsters.

Some year when I don't have soo many irons in the fire I'm going to make a few myself. It looks like a very rewarding hobby.

Have you looked into the Six series guns? They are in-between and come in many different configurations.

I am not a fan of the SP101 under any terms. I do however like the GP100. since you are of the mindset the 6" GP100 is too large I would have bought a 3" GP100 over the SP101 ant day. The trigger on the SP101 is terrible and seems like it doesn't reset when you try to fire it quickly. (it's made that way believe it or not)

+1 on the Six Series. Cheaper and you get 1 more round. I don't get the SP101 concept. Make a CCW revolver that is built like a tank and has a mediocre trigger? I'd rather have a slightly bigger 6 shot revolver that can handle ONLY 50,000 rounds. :) I'd take a Six with a 2-3" barrel and round the grip frame down if I wanted to CCW it.

Actually if I was concerned about weight, I'd pack a polymer semi auto. So my "compact" revo is a 3" GP100.

Love my sp101, with the hogue grips it soaks up the recoil of higher power .357 loads. Also, I forget it is on my hip a lot of times. Just have to get the right holster for it.

Buy-Sell-Buy-Sell... makes the world of guns go around. Good luck wih your decision. I prefer the GP-100 over the SP-101. If I wish to carry a steel framed revolver, I have a Colt Detective Special for that purpose. I have never been fond of the GP-100 with a 6" barrel. I much prefer the 3" and 4" models. My 6" revolvers are Colts and Smith's.

I try to keep moving forward keeping my best choices. If a gun does not work for you, sell it and move on. But if you like the gun and selling it because you need the money for the next gun, it is usually a poor decision.

If the only reason your doing this is for CCW then i think its the right move.Otherwise i wouldnt part with a GP100 thats built like a tank and will last forever.
