My College (Indiana State) has given me permission to start a new Rifle/Pistol team, and I was wondering if there is a way to raise money to purchase supplies?

Other than the Bonnie and Clyde approach as the previous poster maybe meant, ;) you might contact the Director of Civilian Marksmanship, the NRA, and your Congressman. A letter to each soliciting their help might pay off. HTH

When I started the hockey team at my school there were bi-annual meetings of the student senate where they decided how much of the school's money we would get for the year, if you are an officially recognized club and can prove you have expenses then I would think you'd get some cash. I think we got like $1000 for the team (which when you think about the tuition we all pay, times 15 players, is less than 1 % of what we put into the school)

Well, if they've agreed to let you start a Varsity team, then you should get funding from the school athletic dept. Rifle is an NCAA sport, Pistol is not, but the NRA runs the pistol collegiate program and some schools do have varsity teams. I spent 3 years on Ohio State's varsity pistol team and a couple other THR members here shot for Purdue's club team. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. If I can't answer it, I'll give you my coach's contact info. In fact, you may want to speak with Coach Sweeney (osu pistol) or Coach Cherry (osu rifle) regardless, they could give you the ins and outs of collegiate shooting as well as help you get started.

I shot for the University of Virginia's club pistol team from 1976 to 1980. I would be happy to put you in touch with my coach.

If this is an actual "team" run out of the athletic department, it should be easy to get more funding (just ask them).

If this is just an affiliated club (like ours), there is usually some sort of Student Government apparatus, as waktasz said, that supplies budgets. You will have to do some legwork here.

As for the NRA, I believe grants are only supplied to clubs with a Federal EIN.

I agree with looking into the NRA Foundation. They generally award money to programs that benefit a broad section of shooters with emphasis on those that benefit youths. Getting funding for a team (a small group of people) might not be easy.

However, I doubt your school has it's own range, and you'd probably need to borrow range time from a local club. If you could get a grant for that CLUB top buy smallbore gear (which juniors could also use) then it'd probably be a shoe-in.

It's all in how you write the grant request.

There is a guaranteed way to raise lots of money quickly - gun raffle. Hold one over the Internet and list it on every gun board available. Advertising is free. Overhead is minimal. Ask a local FFL to donate a gun at cost to the cause and handle the transfer. Let him know you would reward him with referrals. Make it a gun everyone can own, i.e., not a gun restricted in some states. A revolver is a good choice, or a economy 1911 that is on all the approved lists, or a shotgun, etc. Just don't make it a junk gun that no one wants (read, Daly, Taurus, Sigma). Sell tickets in your college town area, through your state NRA branch, and again, over the Internet. If you sell 500 tickets at $10 each, that's $5,000. I have never heard of a gun raffle that did not reap huge rewards.

IIRC IU had a skeet and trap team up untill a few years ago. I remember shooting with them and the Purdue collegiate team during some registered skeet competitions. This was back in the early 90's.

My nephew is at IU as a sophomore. But I think he's flunking out. :banghead:

How To Raise Money

I'm the chief fund raiser at my gun club.We raffle away a .22 rifle every year and clear over $3000.00 selling $1.00 raffle tickets. We set up a table at about 5 local gun shows and sell tickets. The gun usually costs us around $200.00-$300.00.
The other place to try is your local Safari Club International chapter. They are very giving to students and pro gun/hunting organizations.Get aquanted with the local gun clubs and see if they can help.
