Great picture from Switzerland

Actually this is my try to see if I've figured out how to link to pictures.
Not yet...posting the URL to the hosting site technically isn't linking. I'm certain you'll figure it out though.

The wife and I took a tour in Israel back in early 74, I have a slide somewhere, taken at Jerico of a young Isralie soldier in mini skirt, sandels, shopping bag on one shoulder, Uzi on the other, waiting for a bus. Not as pretty as those girls.

Saw a lot of others, dined one evening at a seaside resturant in Tiberas and there must have been at least 60 young soldiers down from the Golan hights for a bit of R&R. Fighting was going on up there, could still hear the big guns at times.

Got my first exposure to open carry when backpacking thru Europe after HS. The guy in front of me was leaning on his LMG while waiting for the bus in Switzerland.

I thought it was cool but my buddy hid behind me.

heres a chart.

http://opencarry.org/

check to see what color ur state is and you'll see the laws.

indiana is actually a gold star state which means that you can pretty much carry it open without many restrictions. el tejon knows more about this than i do, as do many others on here.

Screw the open carry...I want my government to issue me an actual SIG assault rifle. Forget "economic stimulus packages" and just give me more long guns, please.

Freedom of the Swiss

I took a trip to Switzerland a few years ago. In between hiking trips we stopped off at a tiny grocery store to get some picnic supplies. While checking out, a gentleman in front of us was buying some twine and I noticed he had a Sig 550 folder slung on his back (NOT a 556!) Funniest part was my wife did not even notice.

The Swiss are a great people with much honor who love firearms. What a great place for a vacation....

We have OC in VA. Does that include rifles? I would think the police could arrest someone here for carrying around an AR like in the pictures. Maybe not citing the OC allowance, but 'disturbing the peace' or somesuch.

Seancass- Yeah there is no prohibition on carrying a longarm 'round here. Maybe El T can shed some light though on any other arbitrary charges that could be brought such as "disturbing the peace".

I OC my pistol in grocery stores all the time, technically, I could OC a rifle or shotgun around town as well, and they can 'try' a disturbing the peace on me, but La courts have ruled that OC is not a reason for PC, RS, or disturbing the peace....then again, if I have read the laws around here, once I get my CCW, I can CC a shotgun under my trench if I so felt like it....

I think this is kind of misleading. Switzerland isn't the land of ultimate gun freedom that most seem to make out. My wife lived there and while openly carrying your rifle back from the range isn't a big deal, carrying a loaded gun is a big no-no (without a permit, which is rare). And unless you are active in the militia, no full-auto.

Americans still have it much better.

Actually you can have full auto as a swiss resident not in the military. You are required to get a background check through a phone call from the local police, then you are clear to purchase whatever you like, much like the laws in the US, only the menu is enhanced :D

It is commonplace to see young men get off of the train and go across the street to have a beer at the brasserie with their rifle sitting on the table in front of them.

Swiss friends....

We became close friends with a young Swiss couple while the hubby was dong post doctoral research at a nearby unniversity (uber smart engineer type)...

At the time he was still in the militia (He called it reserve army)...

Back in Switzerland, they lived in an apartment (like just about everybody else, accept the rich Arabs on lake Geneva) and he said the biggest pita about his reserve duty was that he was responsible to keep and maintain his "kit", and that this took up the majority of their only small coat closet.

His wife was happy when he turned 40 and was kicked out of the reserves (they only keep a specified amount of men in this capacity, and roll the "old farts" out to make room for the young) as she got her closet back. ;)

I hope we can afford to go visit them some day, as we have a standing invite.

But don't be to jealous of the Swiss. The economy is very tight, employment opportunities are very limited, just about every product costs double, and home ownership is a dream that is out of reach for the vast majority of folks (even engineers with their PhD.)

But does any of that stuff really matter when your own government gives you a full auto sig assault rifle to keep in your house?:D

I was under the impression that the Swiss do have a gun loving utopia. considering this thread, what country is there that has good gun laws, but doesn't cost an arm and a leg for housing/groceries/etc? Serious question, my wife and I would like to eventually have a summer residence...

Of course the political tide in Europe is trying to pressure the gun control agenda on the Swiss even as I type this...

Indiana - southern part is quite scenic - a permit is very easy to get for open & concealed carry and not restricted to handguns either. ;) The cost of living there is better than decent too.

And, there's always Texas.
