I'm putting a Jet suppressor on my AIAW and and had to get the OK from the local Chief of Police. Some chiefs in Pennsylvania will not sign off on Class 3 gear and you can be SOL.

Anticipating resistance I took recent match results, my shooting log, put on an MGM Iron-man T shirt and headed to the pokey to plead my case.

The chief invited me into his office immediately, asked if I was law enforcement, which I'm not, and why I wanted a class 3.

To make a long story short he looked thru the match results with interest but what put me in the clear was my log. I offered to show it to him and you would have thought I had held up a cross to Dracula. He held up his hands in a blocking gesture and said "put it away, put it away... I had to keep a log in the Marines."

Needless to say I was given a thumbs up on my request.

KEEP A LOG!

It gets better. I started talking to the desk sergeant and told him I had let my carry license expire since I have not felt the need to carry since I moved out of the city.

He says to me "Please get your carry license and carry. We're a very small force and if we are already busy you might have to take care of yourself until we can get there."

Right on! I liked those guys. They want me to friggin carry. They were friendly, courteous and respectful. I hope and think that they feel the same about me.

Yup, that's PA for ya....

RKBA is (more or less) treated as a right, and (more or less) supported by the authorities.

Ya gotta love it.

Damn, what town is that? I live over the border in NY, and keep thinking I will probably end up moving south of the border some day. I already have a PA permit, but like the politics better in general "down under", and hate supporting NY with my taxes. But I'd have to be able to find a job down there too, otherwise I'd still be paying the NY taxes.

Congrats on the Can!

I formed a corp because I don't like having to ask permission to exercise a right and I hate being fingerprinted like a criminal. :)

I've seen reference to that before; can you give a brief overview of how it works? I've already got a corporation due to an unusual employment situation :)

I won't get into details about actually forming a corp or LLC, nor talk about tax issues and filing requirements because they vary from state to state.

As far as having a firearm transferred to your corp, it is pretty simple. For a Form 4 (or form 1), you fill it out with your company information instead of personal information. Since it is a corporation, there is no requirement for fingerprints, photograph, or CLEO sign off. Include a certificate of Compliance (form 5330.20?) along with it, and I have always included Articles and Certificate of Organization and a Certificate of Account Status from the state comptroller indicating my company is in good standing.

Also, my understanding is that any and all "officers of the corporation" are entitled to handle the Evil Regulated Device in question, unlike doing a private Form 4, in which only you are allowed to use it (or supervise another using it). And, you can decide who are "officers of the corporation."

Talk to a lawyer about how that is done, of course. I've never done it myself, but I probably will be doing it soon enough.

jlh26oo "Tell me more about this shooting log."

I just keep a log of all my shooting experiences and training; number of rounds fired in practice, drills, drill times, match results, match critiques of my performance, dope for my rifles, notes from classes, load data, lessons learned, things to do.

Everything that might help me become a better shooter. Keeping a log of what drills I do helps me to plan my practice sessions rather than just throwing lead down range. You need a notebook if your in school.

I had just the same kind of experience when I went over to get my CCW permit from Sheriff Baca of Los Angeles, and my Class III permit from the California DoJ. They were all like, "cool, we need more of you with CCWs and MGs in Los Angeles."

(Not.)

Anyway, my message is, DON'T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED! Vote for these guys in the next sheriff election. Show them your support. This from someone who knows how bad it can be to have vigorous opposition to the RKBA from local law enforcement.
