Im just getting into black powder. I bought an old Thomson Center Hawken, .50 cal. It was pretty cheap and thought it was a good deal. It was in bad shape on the outside. The stock was just plain abused. I decided to sand all the dents and dings out and just make the gun myown. With a few questions to the gunsmith at FBMG I feel a little better about actually applying the finish the right way. He said he has been a buckskinner since he was a teenager so I think he lead me in the right direction. I think it will look fairly 1840's original when Im done. I'd like a few oppinions from some of you that have been doing this a while. What do you say?

If you wanted to make the stock look more like was from the 1840's, maybe you should have left all of the dings in the stock and then added a few more. :D

Seriously though, some of us just like to shoot frontstuffers and don't try to re-create any particular gun or time period. But if you're thinking about doing any re-enacting or just like to enjoy yourself while performing the work, then go for it and enjoy yourself in the process.
Good luck and make lot's of smoke!:)

Thanks arcticap. I guess I should have added the other reason I wanted to refinish it was it had some glossy looking crappy finish on it. It too looked bad and had to go.

The best way to get er looking "right" is to use er. Only time and use will get the final "look" that is so great.:D
