I have used quite a few gun Cleaner, lube and protectants. From the older stuff like Rem Oil to the newer stuff like Froglube and Gunzilla.

I've had pretty good results with Rem Oil, it's reliable and inexpensive, has stood the test of time and all in all, I trust it.

I'm not knocking Froglube, but don't trust it in harsher conditions. I also don't care for the waxy residue it leaves. I do like that it is all natural and safer to use.

I didn't care for Gunzilla, to me it doesn't seem to last long.

I have heard great things about Ballistol from people I trust. I just bought my first can of it. I have treated 3 of my guns with it, now it's just a wait and see on how it performs.
I do like the ease of use, the smell isn't bad, it seems to stay on well and definitely has been time tested ( It has been around since the early 1900's). It's history is mostly in Europe, but is becoming more commonly used here. It is harder to find though. It isn't in most gun shops and definitely not in big box stores.
So far so good though.

What are your experiences with gun cleaner, lubes and protection products?

I am always selling CLP, they seriously need to pay me because I got lots of people using it lol. It is easy, and easy means you will more likely do it. Yes it is not the best, but it works and again it is easy.

Home made Ed's Red is as good as any commercial cleaner.

I oiled with Rem Oil successfully for 20+ years. I recently swapped to Eezox.....I did a semi - scientific corrosion test using steel washers this summer. Eezox out performed everything I tested, which included favorites such as Rem Oil, Ballistol, and Johnsons paste wax.

+1 for ed's red!

I even started a new mix.

1part stp
1part napa copper anti sieze
4parts peak synthetic grease.

the stp helps to mix the copper and synthetic grease and is very smooth/sticky/gooey/sliding/stays where you put it.

it is a good compliment to ed's red oils.

be safe

I agree and it lubes pretty well for guns you use frequently. For long term storage, I have used rem oil for a long time and had no issues but recently switched to mobile1. It seems to work as well or better and costs a fraction of what rem oil does.

I use Ballistol I like it works very well for me and its non toxic, never had any rust
no complaints from me

I've always been a Hoppes #9 guy and Rem Oil to Lube. My wife doesn't care for the Hoppes smell. I always tease her threatening to buy the Hoppes #9 colonge.

Thank you everyone for the input.
Ugaarguy, I'm getting ready to read the report that you put a link to.
Thank you everyone.

Get froggy!.....

I purchased a 4oz CLP bottle of FrogLube after a TFL member did a extended T&E with approx 30 or so different brands. FrogLube & Hornady One-Shot were near the top of the list after the test phase. :)
Review some older posts & maybe you can read/watch the T&E too. DIY something was the forum member name.
I like FL. It does leave a light sticky film on the metal but I have 0 problems with that. Note; the designers/company advise heating up the metal surfaces prior to application so that may change the end results. I'm fine with just liquid FrogLube.
The product was engineered by a US navy specwar veteran & has many fans. :D
I've used Ballistol off & on since 1997. That's a great CLP too. You can use it with bare hands & it's non toxic. The big - is the US markets/vendors only have the smaller spray cans.
In the 1990s, I remember Ballistol in larger 10/12oz spray cans.

There are a few other "fan/web" favorites worth a look; Gunzilla, LPX, Eezox, Slip2000, Weaponshield, Rand CLP, Italian Gun Grease/IGG but you can't go wrong with Ballistol or FrogLube.

Rusty
PS; I've heard the new cleaning solvent/de-greaser Breakthrough, www.Breakthroughclean.com is impressive. I haven't used it but there are many + reviews/videos for it.

I have gone through about 2 or 3 cases of G96, which says a lot because few places actually carry it. It works on everything. Just a few months ago, I used a good portion of a bottle cleaning up and removing rust from a very neglected machete. Not long before that, cleaned out a more neglected musket loader that sat in a fishing cabin for a few decades. Smells like vanilla and light enough for routine cleanings. Won't harm anything on a firearm either, including wood. I left an AK bolt soaking in G96 for almost a week to break up gunk.

See post #4. And this is THR, not TFL. ;)

I have used Breakfree CLP for years on guns and knives and never had a reason to buy or even try any other product...never had rust or lube related failure while using it even when trying to get those things.

I'm that way. I find something that works for me and then I bang it till it fails me. There is no shortage of great gun lube and preserve products.

VooDoo

Thanks!....

I read over the mistake. The DIY tests are on The High Road. I think it was around the end of June or July, 2014. :D
Ballistol did okay & so did Gunzilla. Some gun care products were not that great.
FrogLube was impressive. I saw a few other "T&Es" online and FrogLube did very well in those tests too.
The US shooting sports industry seems to have new formulas & products every 10min or so. ;)
Old stand-bys like Hoppes #9, Ballistol, Ed's Red, etc will always be used or suggested by the "old timers". :)
