Okay, I have a question on how often you clean your firearm. I make it to the range usually once a week MAYBE twice if I'm lucky. I usually pop through a box or two of ammo for each particular gun I bring. (Kimber .45 & Taurus Judge)

I clean my guns after each tour of duty ... is that right or is that being anal?

Just wondering what everyone else does!

I am the same way, I usually clean after every time at the range. I have often wondered the same thing....am I just being anal. I really would like to know how often other folks clean them and if they have any problems if they dont clean between usuage.
 
I clean my firearms after each trip to the range.
It's almost certainly overkill, but I LIKE them. I enjoy being with them, handling them, and taking care of them. Also, it's a good idea to check the piece thoroughly for any potential problems, etc.
 
Ive left a gun to sit 24 hours uncleaned as i was just too tired that night,But it was done the next evening.
I don't think its being anal,and heres why.
Almost everyone here believes or tries to "never sell a gun" as its too hard to replace.We may trade one for another tho.
With that in mind we think "im gonna own this until i die,and leave it too ???" so thinking that way keeping it clean now will keep us from kicking our own ^%$^ years down the road when we look and see rusty innards in our guns.
 
Every time I shoot it. Doesn't matter if I put six rounds or a hundred through it. Same principle applies.
 
after every trip to the range, then a few days after its range trip to get the residuals. then after that its just once a week, maybe once every two weeks for the onse that stayed in the cabinet. but the carry gun gets cleaned daily, pain in the @** but if it goes out it gets cleaned
 
I guess I am the miniority here. I will clean every 500 or so rounds. I mostly shoot handguns and see no noticible difference in accuracy with a clean or dirty gun. Even after shooting 800 rounds of lead reloads through my Les Baer without cleaning the bore has very little lead. A field strip shows clean oil on the rails so I see no need to clean more than that. Cleaning takes place mostly when I am watching TV. Thank god for football. :D
 
* I know the ammo you load can make a big difference on how often cleaning is necessary..

I do believe some guns need to kept cleaner than others to perform 100%.

CZ has some pretty tight tolerances and crud buildup in the wrong place can ruin your day. My Sig is forgiving about crud. The XD is forgiving. I'm told Glock doesn't get upset by a lot of crud. Some competition guns are pretty sensitive to crud.

100 to 200 rd range trip and I just wipe it down and run a bore snake through it.

Maybe two/three range trips same treatment.

Then I use bore solvent and cleaners and relube.

Before a match I do a thorough cleaning and lube.

I clean mags when they show crud, feel gritty when loading or after I've dropped them in dirt a few times.

+1 If not, I couldn't sleep at night thinking about all the "nasty stuff" eating away at my "puppy"....:)

I think this may be going too far. You'll probably wear out your guns faster from cleaning then shooting. if gun gets wet or you're working in a dusty environment that's a different story. My carry guns get a daily inspection and maybe a once a week wipe down.

I do clean handguns completely after every shooting.

A myth that keeps growing into a truism....:) Now, if you are "Mr. Bubba" & start using a Dremel for polishing, etc., might have some substance...If anything, the carcigenic acids-residues left for a time that are present in barrels will do more damage than any constant cleaning. Look at barrels that are "pitted" and you'll know what I speak....My view, anyway....
 
I clean after every range session, usually the same day, but occasionally the following day. I also wipe down, de-lint and lube carry guns every month or two as needed.
 
I got to go with cleaning every time it gets used. As for the ones just hanging out in the safe, depends on where you are. Out here in the desert I sometimes go with twice a year. Gun socks and a goldenrod in the safe go a long way towards no rust. As for the boresnake how come he didn't get a Nobel
 
I clean everything after every shoot but the .22s. Those I leave dirty until they fail to feed, fail to extract, start blowing clouds of lead dust on a trigger pull, etc. Then I scrub 'em out.
 
I have a Polymer Kimber that I have over 10k rounds through - its been cleaned half a dozen times, and its still a tight pistol.

My 9mm AR had about 5k through it last time I cleaned it well.

I have one kimber that I put over 5k though without cleaning - I had to bead blast it when I did clean it, but it always went bang when I pulled the trigger.

I'll pull the slide off and do a quick wipdown somewhere between 750 and 1000 rounds. Detail strip and clean somewhere between 1500 and 2000.

Anything that just sits in the safe gets a wipedown once or twice a month.

I hate cleaning guns. And as far as I can tell, they dont mind being dirty. After about 500 rounds, it doesnt appear to get any worse...
 
You don't need to do a full cleaning after every shoot but I would run a bore brush and a pad with a little oil down the tube if it's going to set for a month or two just remember to run a dry pad before you shoot again. If you will be using it again in a couple of days just run a swab down the tube. Living in the desert I keep mine in a gun case or gun sock to keep the sand out. If your in humid conditions throw a cou[le of desicate packs in.
 
I strip, clean and polish after every mag I shoot.

It just makes the experience so much more rewarding.

The range I go to doesn't mind that I set up a cleaning station. The only thing is, when I go through a whole can of GunScrubber at the indoor range, everybody seems to get a really giggly and trigger happy. Must be poorly ventilated.

Ok, That's not really true.

I do clean every gun I shoot anytime I shoot it. I might let it sit there overnight if I just don't feel like doing it immediately, but never more that a day. The way I see it, I love my guns and I tend to take good care of the few material things that I actually really care about.

It's like the old saying says:

"Take care of your gun, and your gun will take care of you"
