Gun Control Is Never Going Away

Right now the NRA is the face of our side. Right or wrong, it is what it is. I still do not understand why we have less than 5 million people in the NRA. With all of the guns sold to new people since Obama was elected in '08, that number should easily be doubled. Something is wrong there and needs to be fixed.

I say that every gun purchase should come with a free 1 year membership to the NRA. Even if 10% remain after the free membership expires, it seems like it's more than what they are getting now. This would swell the membership to a number that the people running for election can't ignore. 10 million sounds a lot better than 5 million. When the 90% drop out after the year is up, they will be replaced by the next year's gun buyers. The number should reach a certain peak that should remain steady until the number of new buyers decreases.

The people who recruit at the NRA need to change their approach to resigning their members. I know they turn off a large number of members now with their tactics so they need to hire someone with PR experience who can recruit the new members to return instead of coming across as the sky is falling propoganda agenda they run now. Yes, we are in a fight for our lives (so to speak) but I do not like how they deliver the message. There has to be a better way to recruit and then keep the membership growing every year. We need 20 million members, not 4 or 5 million. That would intimidate anyone running for office.

Right now we are a strong annoyance. We could be a huge force. Something is not right when you consider all the new people being introduced to the gun market in the last 5 years.

The folks in Connecticut and California would beg to differ with you about gun control going away. I don't think it is, it'll make a come back, and in the meantime it'll add fronts we never thought of.

The antis are likely working on innovating ways to attack our rights. What are we doing to innovate ways to attack gun control.

Antis are like cancer. You tolerate the cancer tumors and that nonsense will eventually spread. We need to move on their bastions. We need to light them up politically. We can't wait on the NRA. We need new ideas and new solutions. Ideas and solutions they don't think we are capable.

If I was an anti I'd be laughing my kesiter off at us. A bunch of disorganized penniless fools who will be overwritten by the poverty mongers and race pimps. Who never tried to organize beyond their precious NRA made up of the 1% who never sought to rock the boat that hard. Why they prayed to the Saint Alan Gura.

If your plan is rely on the status quo, that is a dangerous reliance to make. Even if we are "winning" why don't we exploit our advantage. Our momentum. Why aren't we gong after California like mad. Why aren't we showing them we won't be appeased, satiated.

What a laugh. They can't get rid of 300 million guns, but they're going to control billions of rds of ammo? :)Almost all of the guns are serialized. All of them cost much more to produce than ammo, and are much bulkier/heavier. The IRA smuggled millions of rds of .22lr into Ireland. millions of tons of dope cross our borders, every year, and there's far more demand for ammo than there is for dope. Never happen.

As I said, gunowners are lazy, cheapskate apathetics who don't deserve their freeoms. Every last gunowner should be an NRA member. No antigun politician would dare offend 70 million voters.

MagnumDweeb, Midwest and fellow sports enthusiasts: I'm willing to spend several dollars among other groups which might achieve a concentrated, tactical victory in other states.

Years ago I was very indifferent to sports shooting for a very long time, and was never exposed to any NRA talk, other than on CNN. The widespread anti-gun bias of most of the mass media was not apparent either.

For a consistent membership, shouldn't we support the NRA financially, not just in spirit (as an Army Of One) until there is huge growth of a powerful alternative? If we all were an Army Of One, there would be no unified voice with clout among so many politicians.

In a perfect world, no lobbyists would be needed.
Our opponents who want to eliminate all, or almost all private gun ownership will use every trick, lie and deception they can muster.
They are ruthless when given the opportunity and have no respect for much of the US constitution. We can't afford to kid ourselves about this.
We need an even stronger "voice" than we now have, and it will require even more money-crass as this appears-to fight the George Soros types, Schumers, Bidens, Bloombergs etc.

Sun Tzu had a curse he used to tell people I believe. "May you live in interesting times."

I first heard that attributed to Confucius...probably long before you were born, and long before Al Gore dreamed of inventing the Internet.

However, a quick search will reveal that this quote is un-attributed, and may never have been spoken before the internet. Okay, I don't believe that either, but it was probably never spoken by anyone with any "quote-worthiness".

Sun Tzu was a warrior, and Confucius was a philosopher. Ask yourself...which one fits here? :)

Please see my signature to see what I am doing,(my wife would have the same signature without the rifle certification) in this fight. My state organization, the West Virginia Citizen's Defense League (WVCDL) has a lobby day each year on Presidents Day. A large group of members will be going to the state capitol to let our state reps know how we feel and that we are watching them. My wife and I will both be there.
And tomorrow we will be buying NRA memberships for two of our neighbors, The wife did not like guns or shoot until we took them to the range. She now owns her own Glock 26 :)

Ignition Override, imagine if my setup got off the ground and it grew to a million members. I wouldn't necessarily be at the helm mind you. But say it did, I'm sure if the group went to the NRA and asked to join for $5 a head the NRA would jump at the chance to add a million members to its ranks over night.

In the meantime we have to encourage folks to join the NRA while we are at it. But we also need to start our own thing. The NRA is great and we should all enjoy it. But we need fresh ideas and solutions. Something that can also get heads turning at the same time. A Trust, a self-sustaining Trust, in my opinion does that. It makes folks scratch their heads because most won't understand it and those who do will understand that once it becomes truly self-sustaining, it will never stop fight the RKBA fight.

It's almost like we need a Crowd funding source setup as well. To help the Trust get off the ground. But I'll say this to Operation Retirement. Also add to the Trust as part of its goals and operation to get it off the ground as well. It'd add broad appeal. Operation Retirement and my idea isn't too dissimilar, just different ways of getting there with a little extra. Honestly I'd like to add to the Trust, that once it reaches a certain amount of self-sustaining assets, that it would then start various outreaches like we've never had before.

What kind of outreach. This idea is out there but stick with me. Guns and ammo are expensive for some but doesn't stop people from wanting them. So say the Trust were to get up to $1,000,000 in its corpus that is setup with a Corporate Trustee and it is possibly growing at seven percent a year. So say seventy thousand dollars. Five thousand dollars (seven percent) is set aside for special outreach where volunteer members of the Trust create community service programs for folks to volunteer their time with the Boy Scouts, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Suicide Hotlines, etc. (let the Trust membership figure it out). Upon reaching one hundred and twenty hours of volunteer time that can be substantiated.

The volunteer is rewarded with guns and a thousand rounds of ammo. The volunteer would have to undergo a background check and pass and the gun and ammo would be bought from an FFL dealer. The antis would flip a lid knowing folks were volunteering their time for guns and ammo. The program would be simple and a person could only qualify once in their life. It seems silly but think about the publicity. Then also think that half of the growth ($35,000) is then put back into the corpus every year, so the outreach program would only grow and grow and grow.

Also the Trust would finance the competitors of antis even when there were antis for the purpose of preventing long time incumbents from growing in power and influence.

Thank you SteveK, I'm also an NRA Certified Pistol instructor and I take folks to the range when I can. Still, more needs to be done. If you can afford booze and cigarettes, you can afford to do more I believe.

Stevek, check out http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=742061. I'm going to start working up some clear language in the coming weeks, as well as language for the Trust. I like the Operation Retirement bit and want to incorporate it but I'd have to put certain condition subsequent triggers in place so the activism finances were not at risk of being spread too thin too fast.

Get a couple of incumbent anti sheriff's in California dethroned, and that would hopefully drive some publicity.

I'd like to comment on this portion of the OP:

Remember who gun control supporters are. They are backed by the impoverished and intellectually bankrupt and corrupt. And there are a lot of impoverished folks out there and there numbers will only grow with the way things are going.

The "impoverished" are not the source of the gun control drive, nor are they particular supporters of it. It comes from wealthy elitists, who think they know what's best for society (nanny-state Bloomberg comes to mind), and is supported by fearful and ignorant middle-class suburbanites who have little exposure to guns. The poor -- particularly the rural poor -- are the biggest fans of guns because guns are some of the few things that assure their personal autonomy. I hate to say it, but Obama was right when he said that a large segment of the rural poor "clings to guns and religion" because they have nothing else. (And the urban poor are the same way but their guns are mostly underground.)

Maybe it would be more accurate to say the "supporters" of the gun grabbers, they do tend to vote for candidates on that side of the aisle...

I believe the impoverished would love to have access to guns. The usually live in crime ridden neighborhoods and have no means to defend themselves from the predators who target them. Areas live Chicago and D.C. have been unable to defend themselves for generations. They probably need it the most.

Unfortunately, for them and us, they vote the same way their parents have voted for many years. They don't follow what is truly going on in politics and have voted the same way their whole life without even knowing why other than that's what they were told when they were growing up. Educating the under-educated masses about how important their votes are as well as what the agendas of the people they vote for may cause them to change the way they've done things their whole life.

Well then

They deserve their fate. If they keep electing tyrants, they are destined to be slaves.

Some States are really bucking the Federal trend, Colorado on the recalls for gun grabbers and whacky baccy, Washington on whacky baccy.

I think in some states you are seeing a strong anti-federal movement, and in fact the fed is powerless to stop it. I don't like the wacky baccy rulings, but I do like the strong middle finger to the FED.:D

Connecticut recently was noted for strong non-compliance on a rash of recent state gun laws, this is an encouraging trend and one which is bound to expand and grow throughout the states seeking freedom.

How about getting every business that sells guns to set up an NRA round up like Midway does? I don't see Cabelas and many other on line stores asking for support.Where are they in the hour of need?

Guns are not a voting issue for the urban poor. Bread-and-butter issues trump social issues for them, because they've learned to simply ignore laws that relate to guns, drugs, gambling, sex, etc., etc. The whole idea of being "law-abiding" is very much a middle-class phenomenon. Both the very poor and the very rich have the mindset of ignoring laws that don't suit them -- and in most cases, they get away with it.

That's because the Middle Class has more to lose than those in the bottom 20% of the economy, and the top 10% tends to wield enough power to avoid the consequences of most misdemeanors. At the very least, having an attorney on retainer and being able to pay large fines tend to be helpful in making legal trouble go away.

being a billionaire makes murder charges go away, actually. They don't want to risk such a man paying $50,000 each for hit men from Columbia or the Phillipinnes to get here, do something and go home. A billionaire can hire 20,000 such men.

I give $105 per year to the NRA (between membership and ILA) every single year, and they still call me every month asking 4 more.
Maybe if the NRA showed just a little humility and changed $10 a year per membership, plus another $10 per year for ILA and stop calling and asking for more for the rest of the year once U contribute.
maybe if the NRA payed their people just a little less, more gun owners would be inclined to contribute.
In the mean time I will keep on contributing $105 per year, and no, I'm not rich, but I chose to invest in them because although they R not perfect, they R our allies.

If you really want to elect people who will answer to those who elect them then you need to find candidates or elected officials in your area that reflect your own opinions, go meet them at a public event or better yet in one of their field offices, and give them money yourself. I guarantee you that a $100 contribution will buy you face time and recognition to make sure they understand your philosophy but then you have to continue the contact throughout their time in office (they and/or their staff will immediately recognize you after a few meetings) and hold their feet to the fire. Donations to an organization gets consumed partially by the organization and you have absolutely NO control over to whom they might give it. You give your money directly to a candidate and you have 100% control over its allocation, none is consumed by overhead or waste, and you get access to the halls of power. This formula works at any level of political office but it requires you to commit to more than a check in an envelope!

MagnumDweeb; OK. You got my attention. Are you able to set something like this up? Do you have the knowledge to make this a reality? What kind of seed money would you need?

I think you have a great idea. Darned good actually, best I've heard yet. I believe that this would work. I really do. I do have a few concerns. It won't really matter who "runs it". Yes, it will have to be someone who understands your philosophy. But power and money corrupt. How do you intend to prevent this idea you have from being another NRA?

Not to knock them too badly, but most of the power in the NRA are there for the money. Way overpaid employees mean less money for political clout. I was a member for a long time. Got tired of weekly mailings claiming some pending legislation that was going to make all my guns turn into cotton candy. Almost daily phone calls for more money "cuz we're drowning in debt and the NRA leaders need new airplanes "

NRA is to aggressive panhandling money from its members and to quick to compromise RKBA issues. but, they are the only one I'm aware of that is making a dent in D.C.

How much would you need to get started? No, I don't have that kind of money. If I did, you and I would already be talking over coffee. But I do know someone who has told me he wants to be involved in "something that would turn this country around some. Something to fix some of the wrong I see and read about every day. Not another corporation run by bean counters and lawyers, but something that'll give the common man a fighting chance. Something Patriotic"

His words in quotes. I've cut and pasted your posts and would like to talk to him about all this.

2014 will be an interesting year. Sun Tzu had a curse he used to tell people I believe. "May you live in interesting times." Well by golly these are some interesting times. The Dems are not shy like they were After 1994. Now they are organizing and starting to push us from every angle they can get their hooks in.

If we're lucky it'll help us shift more fence sitters to our side. I've managed a few since Sandy Hook using the various posters on the democraticunderground crying out for the repeal of the 2nd Amendment and total confiscation of all guns. If we're not lucky, more poor unarmed types will vote Dem more often and as such gun control will gain more ground.

We thought Colorado was a bastion that would not fall, and it did. And yes we are working to take it back but there's no guarantee. We got some wins in Illinois and look to have some small ones coming in California but the struggle will never be over.

Remember who gun control supporters are. They are backed by the impoverished and intellectually bankrupt and corrupt. And there are a lot of impoverished folks out there and there numbers will only grow with the way things are going. Am I the only one who found strange that there's been almost no concerted effort to create jobs in this country.

Bloomberg is taking a bigger and bigger role in attacking the BOR and chiefly the 2nd Amendment. He's a frigging billionaire and yes he's been staunched a few times but he's also won a few things at the same time. Can anyone say the SAFE ACT?

Gun Control is becoming the new norm, but is resisting Gun Control the new norm yet. Has the majority of gun owners understood yet that they must actively resist all attempts at control at every possible turn. There are some even on THR that say we must give into Universal Background Checks and wah! wah! wah!. But it won't stop with that, it will never stop there is total confiscation for the antis. If you don't believe it I feel sorry for you.

The reality is that the causes of gun violence and gun suicide is what needs to be addressed but how often do you hear the antis dealing with those issues. They don't and they won't. If the amount of suicides by gun, Domestic Violence deaths by guns, and gang deaths by guns started to go down. The antis would lose their rallying cry. Hell the number of gun deaths has been on a twenty year downturn and they still talk like the world is ending. Ever death is a holocaust, every suicide is a genocide, they won't stop till they win.

And so I ask you. What are we doing. Yes we can write our Congress critters. We should always do that but what else are we doing. Are we joining the NRA en masse. The NRA is feared with four million members, imagine what they could do with twenty million members. How many of us are working to support valiant legal efforts like the SAF.

I get it, money is an issue but then look at what is in your house. How many guns do you own. How many crushed up beer or soda cans are sitting in your recycling or trash. If you could collect all your cans for the year and sell them for scrap and donate that money to a Pro-RKBA group, would you? At what point is the change in your pocket, that you throw on your dresser to let collect dust, enough to donate to those groups fighting for the rights you enjoy. Rights that others want to take away.

The world does not want an America that owns guns it seems like, and we have those here in America who say they are citizens that don't want us to have guns either. Sure we can talk about mass disobedience and noncompliance but those involve risks that may be too great for most people (look at Connecticut).

When do we realize and make clear that the struggle to defend our Gun Rights will never go away?
The only panacea to cope with gun grabbers is recruitment of new people into gun accepting community. Shotgun sports being social endeavor is good place to start. The political affiliation or beliefs of new members are of no consequence.
If guns are confiscated from private citizens ALL will be lost.
