I know this is a topic that has had to come up before but I had no luck finding it.

I have the barrel and receiver of an old Mauser. The barrel has rusted out pretty bad and the gun is pretty much useless. I would like to dispose of this gun. Obviously throwing it out is not an option. I would love to take it to a gun Buyback and laugh as they gave me money for it. However A: I don't want to add to any stats they are pulling and make such an idiotic program look good. and B: I live in a part of the country that doesn't do such stupid things.

So what are my options. Should I just call up the ATF and ask them?

If the reciever is still any good at all, you may be able to sell it.

You mentioned the barrel being junk, I would just toss it.

If you have the bolt as well as the receiver than there is value in the action even with a bad barrel, and selling it would be the best thing to do.

If no bolt, then it is pretty much worthless . If you don't want to throw it into the garbage maybe ask a local gunshop if they want it .

If it's a mauser bolt gun the barrel can be replaced and every part on it is available. Depending on what it is it may be worth it for someone to find a proper barrel and put it on. OTOH even a rusted piece can be collectable to someone.

Put it up on the for sale forum with pictures and a brutally honest description.

See if it sells. If not give it to a favorite gunsmith or gun store if they want it.

If the receiver and bolt are in good condition I might be interested in it for under 50.00

Just remember that the receiver is the "gun" part of the firearm, and is regulated in terms of how you can legally dispose of it to another person. Even if it's rusted and beat-up, it still requires following the law.

I have a local gunsmith who does a fair amount of custom builds for folks. I usually give him my cast-offs in case he can re-use any parts off 'em. It works out well - he gets stuff that may be of some use to him and I get it logged into his book and out of my hands legally.

Actually the Receiver is in good shape and still has the bolt. Hmm.. What is a good source of parts for this. It is a strait handle bolt Mauser. A VZ24 to be exact.

VZ24 actions are excellent Czech...

manufacture and are worth, give or take a few bucks, 75-100 bucks.......chris3

:cuss: I want it for fifty!
:neener:

I didn't know it was that good an action. Actually it would be cost+S&H plus FFL fees since it's not C&R though I think there's an THR member that does those reasonable in Indianapolis.

Please put it on in the sales forum! Money is guns! :D

mrmeval,
If you're willing to drive west a bit, talk to Lee Horner in Mooresville. 317-831-8099

He does them by appointment for $15. I've used him before and would do it again.

Most gunsmiths would be willing to pay for a decent VZ-24 action, so I would not just throw it away. Price, of course, depends on condition and some dickering.

Jim
