Gun for my Daughter?

Update from the OP.

FYI. This is off campus housing close to a major University in the Midwest. I would never expect her to carry on campus. My concern is home security and in the driveway.

I just spent the day at her home. Installed motion detector floods in the front and back. Inspected all doors and cut window stops for the double hung windows.

In addition, I outfitted the girls with OC spray for the key chain and at home. Next step is situational awareness training. I did my best as an amateur.

More to do but I feel a little better/

Scope out the route to and from campus. That is where she is most vulnerable. If the city has a well developed mass transit system, buy her an annual bus pass. I remember a few times leaving a party WAY to far away from my dorm/apartment, and being in no condition to drive.

Buy her a fish bat. It's an aluminum bat 18" long, meant for beating fish to death. No joke! Also a keychain whistle. Loud alert noises are her friend.

I bet there are good videos on youtube for situational awareness.

She is not ready for the responsibility at this stage of her life.

What made you come to the conclusion that a 20 yr old woman is not responsible enough to defend herself with lethal force? Especially with some training. I was in Afghanistan at that age. Some college students have the mentality of a 12 year old but to make that statement without knowing someone isn't exactly fair.

An accessible shotgun that the gals know how to handle would be a great lethal force option. I'd honestly consider good defensive mindset training to be of more importance than even pepper spray although spray has it's uses. There are so many things you can do to avoid a situation rather than have to fight your way out of it.

I have to back up the suggestion of a dog as long as somebody is willing to take responsibility for it long term and more importantly take the time to train it. My Boxer is a complete marshmallow but most of my neighbors and passers by are convinced that he's vicious. He's got a big bark.

Remind them that 911 can take a few minutes to answer and in some cities they can even be put on hold. Phoenix is quick but I called to report a drunk driver in El Paso and was shocked at how long it took them to answer.

A dog and pepper spray are good ideas. Add in a blunt instrument to pummel any problems with while the dog is chewing on them and/or they are covered in pepper spray. SD training in both avoidance and escaping what wasn't avoided would be good, too.

Might take a look at the good old 3 or 4 cell mag lights. It wasn't so long ago they were standard issue for cops everywhere and many preferred them to a nightstick as an impact weapon. Nowadays with the updated LED lights they've only gotten better. Besides, it's always handy to have a good flashlight around anyways and the cost is very reasonable.

If you want to get more compact the new high output led lights put out amazing quantities of light that can be quite disabling to an assailant and some have crenelated bezels to aid in defensive use. I'm a a firm Surefire fan, but there are other less expensive option that are similar.

How about something like a Ruger 10/22 rifle. Less restrictive than a pistol. Easy to use, hi cap mags are available though 10 rounds should be enough. There are all kinds of red dot sights, lasers and lights available to make them good to go in low light conditions. They are fun and economical to practice with.

When my daughter moved home after college and her mom and I were away a 10/22 was her go to HD weapon.

The 10/22 is still lethal force.

The problem with a baseball bat is that you need enough room to swing it, and typically you do so with both hands. In a hallway, you are just as likely to hit a wall as you are your assailant. That is why I recommended the fish bat. A D-Cell aluminum flashlight is an excellent suggestion also. Find one with a strobe mode. Three purposes in one. Find the bad guy, blind him with the strobe, and beat him over the head if he gets too close.

The OP has stated that a firearm is no longer an option, so this one has drifted off topic for Handguns: General Discussion.

Josmund, please feel free to start a new thread in Non-Firearm Weapons to discuss things like tactical pens, impact weapons, and other options to supplement the pepper spray you've already gotten the young ladies. If you'd like more ideas on making the house more secure please also feel free to start a thread on that topic in Strategies, Tactics, and Training.
