Sooo my freezer died like a month or two ago and I decide to turn it into a gun locker. Note: its not a safe. Its just something to keep them in until i get a safe. Its a lot less conspicuous than the gun rack on my wall. Anyways figured its time for some pics. I started by ripping out the compressor, coils, and wiring harness. Then i rewired the light into its own switch. A few boxes of leftover laminate flooring sufficed for the walls and racks. Being built from scraps in my garage means its a free project and the only cost was getting a replacement freezer[emoji38] d4c6a59b2f79fd56950485a9c4e6f321.jpg aed1d12fe65a732c5d0d42c4d2dab794.jpg e38c67ad4b5e93eedabd98df4c47d1c5.jpg 39b6215e07303f97a7ee29a8007c0a38.jpg 16827468d2a519f41fbcaf3b672f5ec6.jpg
I kinda like it..and the fact that its almost right next to my reloading setup allows me to store my powders and primers in a cool dry place.

Probably can. I might install a dehumidifier in the top later. For now the insulated walls should work.

Complete with ammo shelves! I like that idea a lot.
How do you know if the light goes out when you close the door? :D

Pretty clever!

Put a U bolt thru each side and run a chain through them, then padlock it together in front. That precaution alone would protect you from a good percentage of smash and grab robbers, unless they brought bolt cutters with them.

Nice job. I did the same with an old refrigerator before I had a gun safe. I didn't do as nice a job finishing the interior as you did. It's gone since I got a safe. My chest type freezer died after I had a safe but I kept it and used it as my ammo storage chest now.

Don't put much weight on the shelves...all that those shelves are is a thin plastic designed to hold the weight of food. Ammo is much heavier and will break the shelving off of the door.

Good to know. They did seem a tad bit flimsy but it was easier to keep em than to fab up a new set of shelves.

Nice job of re-purposing there! Put a padlock on it on and anyone breaking in will just think you did that to keep the kids from eating all of the Buster Bars!

Dang its been a while since i had Buster Bars lol

You know- if you just ran a chain or coated cable with a lock on the outside of it- I bet a lot of people would think it was still a freezer that you just secured to kid-proof.

Make sure it has been dead for a good long while.

Ice trapped inside the freezer coils will take forever to melt and completely dry out inside the insulation.

You don't want residual mosture inside it with guns in it!!!!

Im thinking a latch and padlock of some sort

I did this to an upright freezer in the garage about 30 years ago. It was a locking type and used it with no probs for years.

I have been thinking about the same thing for humidity control. S. Fla. humidity ruins anything left outside or in a garage.

It looks like there is enough space in there that you can store your - hacksaw, dremmel, sledgehammer, anything else lying around your garage that would make short work of a padlock.

Cobra246;

That certainly looks like a nice piece of work. A couple of suggestions if you don't mind.
1. I'd start looking for a way to cushion the rack slots to prevent marring the wood stocks. Perhaps some door seal adhesive foam strips?
2. Be very careful about storing ammo in the same container as the guns. If one round goes off, they all do & that's not good for anything else stored in there. 2A, I'd be very careful about overloading those freezer door plastic shelves with ammo anyway. A juice can is a bit lighter than a box of .45ACP.

And yup, lock it up.
