Does anyone else go through phases with guns? Not so much that you lose interest in guns then come back to them, but that you really begin to get more interested in a certain type of gun? Does it normally pass for ya'll, or do you tend to stick with one thing for years?

For myself, until now, if it was a gun, I pretty much wanted it. I have several different firearms in several different calibers and was OK with that. Guns didn't have to be accurate, they just had to have POI that was marginally near POA and be fun to shoot. Now I'm beginning to find myself much more interested in accuracy and bolt guns in particular to the point where I'm considering selling most of my semi-auto rifle stuff and lining up everything I can based on the Savage Model 110 line. Bolt gun in .223 and .308, their new slug gun, and a MK-II in .22LR (not based on 110 I know, but close enough!), all with similar scope setups so that shooting anyone of them is pretty much like shooting any of the others until the recoil kicks in. I figure deer and predators alike would have reason to fear me then! I don't plan to do any 1000 yard shooting or anything like that, but for what I want to accomplish they are all more than adequate. But Jeez... getting rid of other guns? I've never even thought of such a thing before...

Sure, I get interested in different gun but I never would sell a gun but keep them so I can tell the story of how my interests changed from one type of gun, like this, to another type, like this.

:)

Sure, I think that we all do, at least when we start. We're just exploring the gun world and seeing what is for us. Being from Illinois I started off being interested in shotguns (here you can pretty much only hunt with a shotgun). I bought a shotgun and shot a little trap when I could. Then I thought that old military guns were cool. Never got my C&R, but did hand select an M1 carbine at the CMP and a Russian SKS. Then I figured out that I liked rifles, but the M1 carbine was going to be expensive (for me) to shoot. So then I went to .22s. Got a couple of them and really like them. Next step I think is a .22 pistol (Ruger 22/45 probably) and eventually a SW Model 10. The Model 10 is just pure class for a great price. After that, who knows. Depends on my disposable income. I also find myself saving up money for one gun, then changing my mind about what I want a couple of times before I go buy something.

When I first started in the 80's it was cheap guns. Quite a few FIE's. Then more expensive brands like Colts, Rugers, & S&Ws. When the early 90's rolled around I jumped on the AK/SKS/Intratec bandwagon due to the AW ban. These days it's mostly used/surplus/police trade-in firearms. Next in line is reloading.

Sure. I started off liking (sp?) plastic pistols. Then I got into a phase of wanting old Colt revolvers for each kid. Now I'm into mil-surp rifles for myself. At least I haven't sold any of the old purchases. that way I can enjoythem all.

Yep I have my flavors of the week with guns. Affairs with one type or another off and on. I am very promiscuous when it comes to firearms.

when i was younger i would go through gun phases all the time. from handguns to rifles to shotguns. i would get the latest and greatest and sell it to move on to somthing else. i usualy went with the seasons. now days i still go through phases but i keep all that i buy now. im more into restoring guns and fix broken ones. i get a sense pride from restoring old firearms and getting to shooting them.god bless Lary Potterfeild for getting me addictted to amature gunsmithing!

I think that I may be getting the AR bug, but I also want an M14/M1a...

Yea...I go thru phases with guns. I generally keep them or at least one of the collection. Sometimes I sell the others so that I can afford a new one from the new phase...

yup... i always go through a couple different phases.. usually 3-5 months at a time.

Revolvers
Big Bore
Polymer pistols
AR-15's
1911's

i never seem to be dabbling in ALL or even multiple. I obsess over 1 field at a time hehehe..

JOe

I too get focused on one particular type. I don't always buy one of that type, but I'll go through phases where a 1911, an AR, a pump shotgun, a polymer framed pistol, etc... is my new interest. I'll read up on them, watch a few videos and peruse the forums. About half the time I'll go all in and buy one.

Gun interest phases? Oh sure! Since I record all purchases, I can clearly see how my interest(s) change and evolved over the years. When I'm most interested, I am buying. What I buy changes as well. However, after you get a few, when interests change, you just reach a little deeper into the safe and choose something different.

I have guns that I haven't even laid eyes on in 10-years and others I litterally look at or handle almost everyday.

Change phases??? I went from shooting/reloading with my grandfather from 4 YO on up to shooting with my father at 10 or so to doing it myself with friends after high school. So for 50+ years shoot/buy/reload anything that was a deal compared to buying new. FUN FUN.:D

"Hi my name is Jim D. and I am a gunaholic." It started out with a Raven arms .25, and a S&W Model 10. That was over thirty years ago. Them I got into surplus arms. Mausers and Mosins and Tokarevs and Lugers, Oh MY!
Then came the internet, and I realised how cheap old .22's were going for. A few years ago a friend gave me four Remington and Browning sporting shotguns he had stored damp. They were rough to begin with, but hours of Hoppes #9, oil, bronze wool, and BLO made the ugly sisters lovely again. This started the shotgun phase. Even though I don't hunt.
Then it was AK's, H&k's, Galils etc.
A year ago a man gave me a Remington 700 as barter for repairing his car. Right now I'm happy punching paper at 300 yards.
All this was done while maintaining a wife, three sons, four dogs, and three cats on a defense contractor employees salary.
The only catch is my wife tells me the house is full. I thought for a minute, then told her I can only wear one set of clothes at a time. Who needs all those extras? And by the way why does she need all those pairs of shoes?

Phases are normal. Mine were due more to economics however. (Better money wise now then I have ever been)

Shotgun
.22 rifles
.22 pistols
.357 for my 21st birthday
.223 bolt
some more pistols
a couple of ARs
.308 bolt
a couple of mausers
a few police trade ins

Going for a 1911 next year, it will be my first. (100th year ann. you know)
And I'm hoping to get my daughter's (she is not even 2 yet) Ar build complete

Really take your time on the thought of selling. Unless it's a total piece of ****, you may just fall in love all over again in the future.

I've been shooting my .223 bolt gun alot more now then when I first bought it. :p ( I've got the cash now....plus I reload)

i think we all go through phases. i've had my share. in the end i'm still a rifle nut. i went through the pistol phase. found a good few and that was that. same with shotguns.
still, nothing does it for me like a nice handy rifle. i'm in the 17 HMR rifle phase ATM and i'm thinking this will be a life long relationship.

It all depends on if it "talks to me". I'll look at a particular gun many times over the course of contemplating a purchase, but it has too hook me with something ....be it history, performance unlike similar guns or even just the challenge of learning new ballistics. I have had impulse buyers remorse before, but they always get traded for something that will bring on a smile when I pull the trigger. Too many ....yea sometimes I feel that, but I get over it pretty quickly.

Definately. I am also bad about impulse buys or selling something I'm not crazy about in order to fund another purchase.

I have learned from experience though that my tastes change, and that if I liked something at one point I'd better hold on to it because I'll probably be wanting another a month after I sell it.

Every "gun guy" I know, myself included, goes through phases of interest with respect with firearms. The one lesson I learned a long time ago was not to sell the obsession of the past for the obsessions of today. Once you do that the obsession of the past becomes the obsession of the future.

I'm going thru a .22 rifle phase right now. I have 5 bolt actions and 3 auto's. Lately I've been lusting after a CZ 452 Varmint.
My cousin/BFF/shooting buddy is buying every Winchester Model-12 shotgun he can find. At last count, he has 11.
I have no idea why we do this.
