Tax time is not too far off in the future and I am expecting a refund, some of which I hope I will get to enjoy (wife and daughters you know, tough competition).

I currently own two G19's, a scoped 700 in .30-06, a 12 gauge 870, a SLR-95, a 10/22 and a Marlin 60. I have had my eyes set on several possible requisitions for this opportunity most of which are redundant to my current "armed American citizens" meek arsenal.

A CMP M1 Garand, an Albanian SKS, a Browning Hi-Power, a SA 1911 G.I. .45, and a Beretta 92FS. I have also been interested in a S&W model 10 or 65, but feel I can live without either for the time being.

Of the above selections I really want the Garand but question it's necessity. Actually I question the necessity of any more guns at all, but I am an admitted gun-addict so I just can't help myself.

The high-dollar purchases will be the Garand, Browning and Beretta, the SKS and GI .45 would be a much more acceptable expenditure in my wife's eyes which disapproves of any further firearms purchases at all. But in the face of such disapproval and expected emotional distress I shall make a purchase to reward myself for the efforts made during this year to provide food, shelter and conveyance to my significant other for little or no charge demanded by myself, whilst I have endured 12 months of a monotonous existence and no new “toys†to have enjoyed.

So I beg the question, regarding my current “situationâ€, which of the above “rewards†do you think would be most befitting? And why.

I'd say the Garand just for the history of it. I have a wall rack up on my wall with C&R rifles, but the two I still want is a Garand and a original MN sniper. Thanks for reminding me - I'm going to fill out the CMP paperwork and send it in. :)

Go for the Garand. not to many left. Besides what other gun can go Bam*Bam*Bam*Bam*Bam*Bam*Bam*Bam*Ping  :D

Garands are no longer made. Albanian SKS are no onger mad, and in much smaller numbers then Garands. The rest still are made. Decide which you want more, Garand or SKS. Myself, I am going to the North store over Christmas break t0 pick up mine.

The SA WW-II Mil Spec .45 ACP can be found for prices ranging from
$389.88 to about $439; and is an excellent bargain. If you handload,
.45 ACP once fired brass is plentiful; and easy to obtain. This makes
the Springer a viable option in my opinion.

I'd go with the CMP Garand. It's not only a great rifle, it's a piece of history.

I would go with the GI, but thats mainly my personal bias since I have one and like it a lot. the stainless is quite the piece of craftsmanship.

More ammo.

I already have an M1 and a 1911, and nothing else on that list really grabbed me. I'd sort of like to get a Beretta 92 just becuase it's identical to my 96 and practise ammo is cheaper. Of course I could just get a .22LR conversion. What I'd really like to do is build an L1A1 with all the "naughty" bits on it to round out my UK rifle collection. Heck, if I could, I'd even like a SA only L85A1.

If I had to stick with that list then I would go with the SKS (rarer by a huge factor).

However, even with the good results last week, things aren't set in stone AW wise. I would spend my money today on one of those eeeeevil black rifles that will shoot down planes w/o a shot being fired/cause school buses to drive off the road/create severe liberal panty wadding/etc.

Unfortunately these days it isn't a bad idea to get grandfathered in :( .

Being a C&R old-timey kinda guy, I voted for the Garand.

However my next two purchases will be an AK and/or a CETME. Especially now that I can get a decent muzzle brake/flash hider.

While the Albanian SKS are nice, they seem to be hard to find, and are expensive for being an SKS.

I voted for the M1, I have my CMP paperwork all filled out and have yet to send it in myself.

Of the guns listed, the only ones I haven't owned were the Hi-power, S&W 10(65) and the Beretta. The SKS was a Norinco and the 1911 was a SA 1911 "loaded" stainless model. I sold my Garand long ago, which I regret daily. The SKS was sold to finance the SLR-95 which I don't regret and I could never shoot the SA "loaded" that well.

Of the guns mentioned, I feel that pistols aren't that much of a priority since I already have two G19's and am totally satisfied with them. To add more pistols would only be to add a new "toy" and it wouldn't expand my capabilities at all.

Having a SLR-95, it's hard to justify a SKS, the reason being that I considered a medium-range semi-auto carbine for hunting that didn't garner much attention in the field. A Garand would fit that bill albeit rather large for the role.

The Beretta just has been capturing my attention with it's beautiful lines and curves, however it is a rather large gun and doesn't hold any more rounds than my G19's. Another concern is it's alloy frame which, as an aircraft mechanic, do not hold it in high esteem for longevity with extended use.

Which leads me to the Hi-Power, an all steel pistol that has stood the test of time and looks to have a promising future. Because of my alloy frame concerns I considered the Hi-Power in it's stead as a long term durable pistol without the worry of wearing out or cracking, yet it's heavier larger and hold two less rounds than my G19's.

I have mostly lost interest in revolvers, having owned several, they just don't fill a viable niche in my collection. Harder to clean, reload and will only add another type of caliber to have to supply for. Not to mention another method of operation to learn.

Then there is the SA GI .45. I do like the 1911 platform and the .45acp cartridge, I never shot the "loaded" SA very well, I hated the sights and the straight backstrap. If I am able to buy another pistol I think the GI .45 will be it.

So, as I am torn between the Garand and the SA GI .45, I believe that it would be a better decision to go for the Garand before the supply dries up and I am stuck with nothing.
