What firearm purchase comes next?

Okay. Most of you don't know me yet, as I am still quite young in my postings. Since my first post back in March with the Beretta 1201FP I have read and learned a great deal about those with whom I associate. As a result, I have learned that when a member has a situation that untenable in their own eyes, the other members walking THR help paint the picture more clearly. That is why I am appealing to you all.

I live in the Republik of California. It is not permanent, but it is what it is right now. Prior to having a "collection" of firearms, my philosophy has been to purchase "the right tool for the job," save my first purchase (a Marlin 1895 .45/70)

The purchases then went as follows:

Springfield 1911
Ruger 10/22
Sig 228
(the afore mentioned) Beretta 1201FP
Weatherby SAS Field
Ruger Vaquero
and two very old firearms from my grandfather (a revolver, and a .22 long rifle), unuseable at this point in time.

The question is this. I won't feel my toolbox is complete until I have a Battle Rifle, a Scout Rifle, a .22 semi pistol, a long range bolt action, an over/under, and perhaps an "alphabet" frame revolver.

Given all the possible situations a gun owner may find themselves in, which purchase should be my next priority? Better yet, why? I can paint myself into a corner with all sorts of scenarios; I need multiple inputs to help me decide. Money is a factor, but not the determining one. The priority at this point is the necessity.

Personally, I am saving up for an M1A. I have a FAL and an AK along with a number of other rifles. I don't like the H&K G3 or clones.

Can you own an M1A in California?

M1A is Cali-legal with a muzzlebrake (not with flashhider).

I would say to get a battlerifle next. I always worry that the gun haters will finally figure out that a M1A or M1 Garand is just as deadly as a FAL or CETME or whatever. . . Second choice is long range bolt action because I think those are just plain fun .

I get a .22 pistol first just so you have the basics covered. You could get a used Ruger Mk II fairly cheap and then go on the more expensive stuff.

I like Valkman's suggestion but my next choice is a nickel plated alphabet S&W .357 revo. Then I want an M1A.

Battle Rifle...

I'd recommend highly an M1 Garand either a CMP one (historical, cheap but may have problems) or a Springfield Armory M1 (no history, cast receiver, new barrel, expensive - mine works like a champ and is very accurate).

If a more modern weapon is more to your liking then a Springfield Armory M1A in the model of your choice from standard all the way up to an accurized national match version. OR maybe a FAL - DSA makes good ones I hear.

Lots'a choices in the Battle Rifle category out there. Now go get one!

I see the logic too, a good sight, and it suddenly functions as two of my picks.

M1 Garand!

D-Day took place 60-years ago this Sunday. Sounds like a good "excuse" to by one to me! (Then again, so does the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, New Years, Valentine's Day, National Potato Day, ... you get the idea!)

I'm one who is fairly new to this, but the M1 Garand I did have opportunity to shoot. An old timer was at the range with his and offered me a chance.
It was easy to use and when the clip "chinggged" - I wanted it.
If I get a rifle, that will be the one.
