OK, folks. Get out the hip-boots, it's gonna get a bit...thick.
Palo Alto is flooded with Porsches. It's quite easy to count 7-10 within a few minutes of leaving the house. Literally. Boxters are prevalent enough to be utterly tedious, and elicit the same regard as a Miata. Bugeye Sprites are MUCH cooler.
Of course, I contribute to the problem myself, but at least I have the decency to drive a 928, which all "true" Porsche afficianados look down their noses at. Something about a
water-cooled V-8 engine in the
FRONT of the car, as I understand it. The resale prices reflect this. 928's are comparitively cheap as Porsches go, (And continue to depreciate, unlike the rest of the line.) as "real" Porsche-philes consider it a faux-pas to even acknowledge the car's existence. Almost liberal thinking, really.
Me? I'm a die-hard non-conformist, who delights in enjoying what others do not have, just to be different. But I also know better, as a 928 is a pretty amazing machine, which feels no shame at it's "red-headed stepchild reputation". Therefore I feel pity for all the rest of those brainwashed conformist drones stuck driving around in a car that could be lumped together with the other 12 cars just like it I'll see in the next ten minutes.
"Hah! Look at that. That fool could have had a beautiful 928 for what he spent on that thing! But no, instead he gets to take heart in the knowledge that he's just another obnoxious yuppie with a snotty attitude annoying regular folks while feeling superior at the wheel of yet ANOTHER 1911..."
It gets me every time, without fail. Always when I'm trying to be condescending to those richer than myself. Kinda deflates my inflated self-importance when I do that.
But I must admit that the idea of a twin-turbo .45 is nothing short of intriguing, while simultaneously a little bit confusing...
