Just spotted this and figured I'd send out a heads up for anyone in the area. It could be interesting:

Gun rights to be featured at Sept. 17 Sandwich Seminar at SUNY Cortland
September 12, 2008

Two SUNY Cortland faculty members will conduct a Constitution Day Panel during a Sandwich Seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at SUNY Cortland.

Robert Spitzer, a Distinguished Service Professor, professor of political science and chair of the Political Science Department, and Christopher Latimer, assistant professor of political science, will present “Guns, Constitutional Rights and You” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Brockway Hall Jacobus Lounge.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be moderated by Professor Richard Kendrick, who directs the College's Institute for Civic Engagement. Sandwich seminars are sponsored by the President's Office.

The panelists will address recent developments on the constitutionality of gun control legislation, focusing on the following question: “To what extent can states and the federal government limit the right to bear arms?”

“We will discuss the consequences of the Supreme Court's recent Heller decision,” Spitzer said. “The judgment established, for the first time, a constitutional right for citizens to have guns. We will examine the legal, political and criminological dimensions of the high court ruling.”

Spitzer, who joined the College's Political Science Department in 1979 as an assistant professor, was promoted to professor in 1989. He is the author of many articles, papers and books, including The Politics of Gun Control and The Right to Bear Arms. His most recent, Saving the Constitution from Lawyers: How Legal Training and Law Reviews Distort Constitutional Meaning, was published in 2008. Spitzer, who has appeared on many national television news programs, is a regular panelist on the weekly public affairs program, “The Ivory Tower Half Hour,” broadcast on WCNY-TV in Syracuse, N.Y.

Spitzer graduated summa cum laude from SUNY Fredonia with a bachelor's degree in political science. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees from Cornell University.

Latimer, who heads the Political Science Department's Law and Justice Program, has focused his research on the Supreme Court, constitutional law, Congress, campaigns and elections and information technologies. He has written several papers on topics ranging from health care, the protection of minors online and the criminal justice system.

Latimer earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from SUNY Albany and his law degree from American University's Washington College of Law.

Constitution Day must be observed by all educational institutions in the United States that receives federal funding. SUNY Cortland is a participant in the American Democracy Project (ADP), where many campuses have transformed that little-known federal mandate into an opportunity to reflect on government, liberties, and obligations as citizens in this democracy.

Nobody takes any sort of position in the flyer. It's a seminar, not a debate.

Most seminars take a position.

Neat! Cortland's too far away to go, though. Guess I'll just have to settle for the gunshow at the State Fairgrounds tomorra.
