Travelling through TN and GA to Atlanta soon and would like some suggestions for places to stop and browse. I-81, I-40 to I-75 on the way down.

I-85 to I-77 on the way back (via Charlotte, NC)

Specifically interested in military firearms, C&R elgible-type stuff. Also really like places with huge selections that let you touch stuff.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

A bit out of the way, but Carter's Shooting Supply in Harrison, off HWY 58 (Chattanooga area).

Like I said, bit of a drive, but a great store. We had a couple others I would send you to, but we've had a few close in the last year.

Gunslingers...Kingsport, TN...just a few miles (6-8) off of I- 81, south on Highway 11w (Exit 74 IIRC) on the right side of the road

Not exactly a huge selection...but he does have a lot of military weapons and surplus stuff

Try hyatt gun in Charlotte, it only has 20,000 square feet of guns and safes, and it has great service too. I spent 30-45 mins looking at a CZ rifle, and two days later I came in, and they rememebered the exact specs I was thinking about, from a gun store that has 20+ people at any given time.

I'll second Hyatt in Charlotte. There is also one in Matthews about 15 minutes off of I-77 (take 485 to get there), but I can't remember the name. They have a range as well.

Firepower is the other range in Matthews, on Industrial Drive. There is also Shooters Express in Belmont NC (just off I-85).

GA - There is one just off Barrett Parkway (about a mile) off I-75 near Kennesaw - can't remember the name of it - nice selection of guns.

Mahoney's in Johnson City, TN. Corner of Sunset and Knob Creek.

Gunslinger's in Kingsport is also good and has already been mentioned.

Mahoney's has the biggest selection I've seen in the area though.

It's slightly out of the way (but well worth it), but there is a store in Bostwick, GA that sounds right up your alley. The name is Brock's, all they deal in is Mil-Surps, and other various militaria collectibles. It's kind of small, but their quality more than makes up for it.

On the return trip (theoretically), you could take I-20 to the store. Upon leaving, HWY 441 is only a few miles away, and that can take you all the way to I-85. Directions are on their site.

If you want to check them out, their website is, www.brocksguns.com

From I-285, they are roughly 45 minutes east. The store owner and the manager are both EXTREMLY knowledgable and helpful. If you're into Mil-Surps as,bad as I am, it's well worth the ride. (After you exit I-20, the scenery is also beautiful.)

Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, GA

Adventure Outdoors is about 15 minutes off of I-75. Last I heard, they have about 7,000 guns in stock. Since they're being sued by Bloomberg and his goons (and fighting back!), it's got to be a good place.

If you visit Hyatt's, you should also visit Carolina Sporting Arms on South Blvd.

If you feel like driving a little more, there's a gun shop in Rock Hill, SC, off Hwy 901 called Nichol's.

south east of atlanta in stockbribge ga, there is a pretty nice gun store, the are a glock leo dealer, and they have sa, armilite, savage, and a full line blackhawk gear store.

Nichols Store, just south of Rock Hill, SC on I 77. Good selection of new and used. Looked at some I wish I'd bought there. If it's not out of your way.

Worth a visit if you happen to be in the area on a weekday. The Gun Rack in Aiken, SC. Off of I 20, located in downtown. Ask to go into the gun room, lot of nice guns in classic calibers built by the owner, an old school gunsmith.

Man,
You guys are great! Thanks so much for the great suggestions. I'll be mapping out a route to try and catch all of these. If there are more out there, keep them coming.

Thanks again,
Dave

It's a little out of your way, but since your that close you need to go to the CMP South Store in Anniston, AL.

A bit out of the way, but Carter's Shooting Supply in Harrison, off HWY 58 (Chattanooga area).

All In Chattanooga Area:

I've actually had a pretty foul experience with the guy who runs this. Aside from that, they've got a decent indoor range (25 yards?), and fair prices on most guns. I just won't buy anything more from him.

Another place would be Sportsmans Wharehouse. GREAT prices compared to most other places. They don't sell used guns (i.e. mil surps) but they've got a decent selection newer guns.

There's a place down in Ringgold, Georgia, called Georgia Gun Trader. I stopped in shortly to check on some ammo so I didn't get a look at his prices.

There's also a small place in the Red Bank/Hixson area. It's very close to Northgate Mall if you're familiar or are passing through that area. His prices didn't seem to be too great but he's gotten an indoor range for handguns (you have to be 21 though).

Darr's used to be a place 5 min from my old house in red Bank but sadly he retired so there's no more gunshop there. He was a little overpriced but I enjoyed doing business with him and his staff.

Edit: There's also a place a little east of Chattanooga in Benton called Benton Shooter's (Shooting?) Supply. Never been to it but it seems like a nice place.

Looking at google maps there seems to be around 10 gun shops close to the Chattanooga area. I'm only writing about the ones I've had experiences with (and Benton Shooters Supply).

Hyatts, oh lord, that is a great place for the selection and all the guns to look at and fondel but that is it, it is well known around my parts back home as "high dollar hyatts". everytime that i am on leave i do go in there though to look.

You can actually knock down the price their reasionably well, if you like haggling

Though the listed price IS expensive, it is worth seeing what they ahve and fondle the guns, see how they fit in the hand and all that, and they have more firearms then most ;)

Did some budgeting, if I find something cool at a good price I will buy something at Hyatts, if not, I will get a assembled lower for a AR-15 online...

It's a bit off I-75 but Benton Shooter Supply is great.

I recommend Coal Creek Armory as well.
