Gun sights

I will be getting [the money for] a new hi-point 995 HD carbine around New Years Day.

This has got me thinking about configuration. I want to put a laser on it, but for ease of access and other reasons I want to mount it above the chamber where the carbines accessory rail is. This would mean removing the iron sights that the gun comes with (which is easy enough to do). Eventualy I will also mount a flashlight on it as well.

If funds allow I might get a Light/Laser combo, but for now it looks like I'm going with a BSA: http://www.bsaoptics.com/productdetail.asp?ID=580&Prod_Code=LS650

I am sort of a keep it simple stupid kind of guy and I personally prefer to have iron sights attached to most of my firearms even if they are using some other type of sighting system. (Laser, Scope, Red Dot etc.)

Why you ask???

Well I guess I could give you the always prepare for the worst when in a tactical scenario like mutant ninja grizzly bears fast roping on to your roof, when all of a sudden your battery goes dead. but I think I will stick to my more realistic pragmatic reason.

Stuff, breaks and goes bad at the worst possible time and usually that would be at the range and if my laser, red dot, scope whatever goes down it is nice to be able to fall back to the irons to continue my shooting fun. That and I just kind of like good ole' fashioned iron sights on my guns.

Im looking to remove the iron sights on my Remington Model 700! I know its as simple as removing the screws, but what about the screw holes left in the barrel?

I've got a red dot reflex sight on my Hi-Point, and it is fast, fast, fast on target. I also added the ATI stock...Much better!

scgolfer88: Brownells and Midway both sell screws that are shorter to fill the blank holes. Failing that you could call Remington and I'm sure they'd help you out.

Gunblade. I'm thinking that the laser you're thinking about would put the doggone laser unit right in the way of it's projected dot! I'm not sure what your options are as far as adding accessory rails on other spots of the gun but I'd look into it so that your laser could ride alongside instead of in the way. This gets stickier when you mention putting a flashlight on it. If possible you may also want to look into the units that incorporate both the laser and the flashlight into a single appliance. Those unit's are commonly intended for pistol mounting but I'd wager they'll still fit a picatinny rail system.

Normally the laser is mounted at the muzzle like this

But I was thinking of mounting it above the chamber like this (replace red dot scope with laser unit)

For more/easier accessibility. Will it work?
