A man w/ an ak47 wearing a ski mask was arrested outside a local gun shop around me,where a life long friend works.I went in a few days later and noticed that all the people working there now carry. If they carried before,it was less obvious.
This brings up the question,of course I realize my audiance here, but how many of you work in gun stores and carry?
I can't carry at work,but I do everywhere else.If I had a job that allowed it I would.
BTW all 3 guys were carrying revolvers(w/ shotguns placed stategically)

Why would you work in a gunstore and NOT carry?

So true. :)

I work in a gun store, and I carry. I carry a service pistol, 2 reloads, and a backup, as a matter of fact. 2 of the other 4 people who work there carry. There are firearms "around" for those who don't, or for those of us who do, should we find them more convenient.

I highly recommend not only carrying at work, not only having a job where you are allowed to carry, but having a job where you are encouraged to carry. That, to me, is the best benefit of all.

They're probably trying to carry in a more open way to scare off possible crazies. Gun stores have a whole lot of guns. If you ripped off a gun store, you could arm your gang pretty well. Good bit of ammo, some nice weapons, etc. Probably a pretty high street value on a lot of those guns, too.

I believe every gun store i frequent has there employees carrying open. Mostly 1911s, Glocks, and XDs in case you wanted to know.

I don't think I've ever seen a gun store where the employees weren't carrying. In one store a teenaged girl worked the counter, and she didn't carry--but everyone else there did.

If they aren't carrying open, you should assume they're carrying concealed. And by the way, never try to rob a gun store. :neener:

My wife is the bookkeeper for the largest gun store in our area and works in an office in the back over the main part of the store.

She never goes to work unarmed. Most think trying to rob a gun store would be a sure path to a Darwin award but that does not mean they won't give it a shot. That's the thing about stupid people, they never stop trying.

Any gun store I went too usually had the employees open carrying. County run range I frequently visit the range officer's open carry, usually 1911's with the hammers back and ready.

I can think of three stores here - no open carry that I ever saw. There may be some pocket guns or under the counter but they are not in the open.

I wonder if it correlates with the upscale nature of the store?

Never been in a gun store where there wasn't at least one person open carrying.

I asked one time at my local store, as the owner didn't open carry and he told me to come take a look behind the counter. There were short barreled shotguns everywhere. Basically, there was no place he could be standing that he wasn't within arms reach of a loaded shotgun.

I too am amazed at how many people out there have tried to rob a gun store.

At the traditional gunshops here in the S.F. Bay Area, it seems as if all or most of the clerks carry, either openly or very obviously printing. But the sporting good stores (the kind that sell basketballs too) don't seem to. But maybe due to the nature of their business, they are more discreet.

What I wonder about it why more jewelry store clerks/stores aren't better armed.

It's funny, but the most valuable commodity in the gun store isn't the firearms, it's the personal information on the 4473's. Think about it - someone steals 100 or so filled-out forms and they'll have enough info for ID theft.

Scary thing is that someone who commits such a crime would probably net a larger "payoff" via ID theft than from stealing a bunch of guns and selling them on the street.

Frightening, yet very true, observation there, Bubbles.

Most gun stores I've been in, the clerks usually carried concealed (or not at all) but most of them are hunting stores that also sell guns. They don't have basketballs, but maybe less than 25% of the store space is dedicated specifically to firearms.

At least one store that focuses on guns has shotguns staggered strategically behind the counter and all of the employees open carry. The cash register is sitting on a thin plywood box (as it appears to a customer) and I would imagine there's a few goodies in there.

At most gun stores, you also have to consider that a good portion of the customers will also be armed. A robber could easily be taking fire from all sides.

I asked this question at one of my favorite shops several years back....

Me: "Why do all you guys carry?"

Guy Behind Counter: "We have 2 of 3 things Bag Guys want."

Me: "What are those things?"

GBC: "Guns and Money."

Me: "...And Number 3?"

GBC: "Drugs or Booze."

There is one small gun shop fairly close to me, run by a gentleman and his wife that are probably in their early sixties or so I would guess. It' s just a bit too far away and I've only actually been there once. The one thing I noticed though was that this older lady, who was very small in stature, was openly carrying ( in the shop) what appeared to be a 4" 686. The contrast of the gun to her size seemed sort of funny and cute, but I'm quite sure she knew how to use it.

There was a all night drug store near the hospital in Kennesaw Ga. where all the employees carried openly due to getting robbed.Even the pharmasist was packin.

More to the story

I forgot to mention the best part of the story.....This guy has an ak47,he's wearing a ski mask on a 60 degree day.The police were actuallY IN THE GUN STORE AT THE TIME.They grab the guy,who says he found the gun in a snow bank and was returning it to the store, and he was cold:D
This guy is no genius.......

Police should have let the man go on with his business. Would have been a good science lesson on Darwin's theories.

Everybody at my store is armed. Heavily. And we can have heavier stuff in a matter of seconds from anyplace in the shop. Plus 75% of my customer base is probably armed.

I used to be pretty regular at a local range. If I was there, and they got busy, I'd normally wind up behind the counter.

Not only have I worked carring one openly, but also with one concealed, and in a one or two cases, a slung AR.

I'm sure that it happens but who the world robs a gun store during business hours?

Not that criminals are intelligent, but holy cow, you've got to be quite the idiot to take on someone who has an arsenal at their disposal.

Maybe the idiots think that all of the guns are unloaded.

They have spent too many hours watching Arnold in 'The Terminator.'

I helped a freind open his gunshop and we all carried there, and to this day, so do all his employees. I carry at work sometimes, but I don;t work at a gunshop.
