Howdy, Folks. Any responsible shooter worth his salt knows that if you drink, don't shoot and if you shoot, don't drink. That's not why I'm posting. I know that in ND and CA, it is illegal to go afield (hunting) while intoxicated. Are there any laws that you know of prohibiting the use of firearms while intoxicated? It can be anything from shooting at the range or in your back yard (if your yard is legally big enough) to using a firearm to defend you and yours in an otherwise legal use of firearms.

I'm a responsible shooter, worth my salt and I drink and shoot and shoot and drink. I hunt and drink on occasion and defend me and mine while drinking on occasion.
It ain't against State law in Idaho and more importantly, it ain't against natural law.

I'd say your thesis statement is flawed. No pudding for you.

From Florida statutes:
790.151 Using firearm while under the influence of alcoholic beverages, chemical substances, or controlled substances; penalties.--

(1) As used in ss. 790.151-790.157, to "use a firearm" means to discharge a firearm or to have a firearm readily accessible for immediate discharge.

(2) For the purposes of this section, "readily accessible for immediate discharge" means loaded and in a person's hand.

(3) It is unlawful and punishable as provided in subsection (4) for any person who is under the influence of alcoholic beverages, any chemical substance set forth in s. 877.111, or any substance controlled under chapter 893, when affected to the extent that his or her normal faculties are impaired, to use a firearm in this state.

(4) Any person who violates subsection (3) commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

(5) This section does not apply to persons exercising lawful self-defense or defense of one's property.

I find that refreshingly realistic. If I ever find out who was responsible for that item I will convey my sincere thanks.

I'd agree with your post if I was stirring my drink with my Glock. Otherwise, I disagree.
Fact is, I've never seen a drink hop up off a coffee table, grab a gun and shoot someone. Have you?

I have a couple 1911s that, being longer and narrower, would make better drink stirrers...'course they wouldn't hold up to the liquid as well. :D
 
Glockman19, Just so it doesn't become an issue, I'll state this now. I do drink. I also have a range card for Iron Sights. If I cannot drive myself to Iron Sights because I've been drinking, I do not go. I will not drive for at least an hour and a half per drink up to 3 drinks. After 3 drinks, I will not drive for the rest of the night. I am not trying to attack you in any way shape or form. If you are only re-enforcing my point, this is a re-re-enforcer.
 
I suspect the tea-totalers will be out in a moment. Look folks, alcohol isn't some sort of magic potion. For most people, one drink doesn't incapacitate them. If you've drunk so much that you can't drive, then you probably shouldn't shoot. But one drink does not a drunkard make. And as for drinking changing one's personality and judgement, I call BS on that. All alcohol does is enhance whatever mood you're in. Case in point:

"Bob's such an a-hole when he's drunk"

Wrong, Bob's an a-hole when he's sober too, just now he's lost his filter.

Alcohol is also a convinient excuse:

"Oh my God Sandy! I was so drunk! I slept with 3 people in one hour!"

Again, said person is merely using the alcohol as an excuse


In short, one drink plus a range trip isn't going to kill you or someone else. You all know your limits.
 
The Marine Corps says 1 drink an hour. It may only be 1 drink, but I'll follow those rules until I'm out of the Corps (and that's the bare minimum).
 
Prince you sound a man with a real handle on the situation. I couldn’t agree more. BTW, I’m one of those tea-totalers. :D
 
I do not drink and play with guns. I may be an old, out-of-touch idiot (according to my kids), but I'm just not that stupid.

However, the Founding Fathers did most of their recruiting and organizing in taverns, and I do not think they were there drinking the newly taxed tea. While I have set my personal level at a certain point, I wonder if this is something written in stone for everyone.

Ohhh a guns and alcohol thread. Whatever biker has said I agree with.

Not only do I not lock up the knives when I'm drinking, I sometimes use them to cook or eat with! The guns get no more special treatment than the knives.
 
I use an Igloo Playmate cooler for a range kit.
I set up for a concealed carry shooting exercise one afternoon.
With the cooler just sitting on the bench and me waiting on 3 students to arrive, the couple that was shooting finished up and left.
We were just getting started with the exercise and 2 squad cars came in fast and one covered us and the other made a bee line for my cooler.

Here the last shooters on the range made an assumption that i was going to be drinking and shooting and called 911. (what else could a cooler be good for)?

I wanted to hunt down the @%$$ &@^%$ and.............., Then i cooled down and did some damage control. the club precedent had to be called, He had heard about it already, (scanner land) Had to be at the next regular meeting to fend off rumors, etc.

And i still use the Igloo, They are the lunch pail choice of the overweight, and when i want a mag, i want it just as bad as some want a sandwich.
