Guns Still Feel Familiar, But...

I think most people tend to be guilty of overestimating their own abilities - whether it’s shooting, sports, physical activity…whatever. The problem is that overestimating your basketball skills probably won’t leave someone else dead.

If your actual shooting skills are still sharp (which the M&P outing seems to show), then you are probably “safe” to carry. There are mechanics that you probably need to refresh, like drawing. There is also a mindset that you probably need to reinstall, since you haven’t carried in two years. It’s not about knowing what to do - but remembering that tool is back in the drawer.

You may not be as fast as you once were, but it sounds like you will be safe - which is critical. You can work on improving your proficiency with live and dry fire practice…but at least you’ll have a fighting chance in the mean time if something goes south.

Small clarification... I have been carrying, just not practicing except for the aforementioned trip. Guns get handled, field stripped, holster principles practiced. By no means have I been apart from my handguns.

Conclusion... I'll carry. All the afflictions have me in a (temporary, hopefully) state where I have no other self defense. Can't run, can't fight. Might get one lick in with my cane. The pistol is my leveler.

The fact that you have put this much thought into it would make me very comfortable around you! ;)
