I like brake cleaner because it completely dries the metal and leaves it bare and exposed. That way, when I apply CLP, it seeps into the metal surface, and even when the oil has dried up, the metal is still colored by the oil.
I'm a huge fan of CLP or LP oils because of their rust prevention. I've done my own bubba salt-spray test and nothing comes close. In Florida, rust is a concern. I don't want any type of lube or grease being a barrier to the quality gun oils I use. I want the metal treated with the rust blocker.
