I don't know how many of you have been following it, but Shotgun News has been running a series on gunsmithing by Reid Coffield. It is an excellent series, very well written, and allows us to follow step by step as Coffield builds a European style sporting rifle on a VZ-24 action. There is a lot of information for anyone wanting to tackle such a project, and even some tips that working gunsmiths might be able to use.

It can also help the reader understand what is involved, what tools are necessary, and why, perhaps, something like this might not be an easy DIY project.

I don't know about getting back copies (I think there have been 5 or 6 chapters at this point), but I have contacted SGN to see if they might consider reprinting this and some of their other original material in book form, like the Gun Digest Treasury series.

Shotgun News

Thanks Jim. I stopped taking the Shotgun News about 5 years ago. If
they're gonna start doin' things like this, I may have to renew. Bolt-action
rifles are an obsession of mine too...

Keep warm! Arctic air mass on the way.

Great Idea Jim!

I wonder if somehow we could archive the articles here somewhere???

I have a very similar project that is progressing ever so slowly- a .275 Rigby reproduction...

Had a chance to meet and attend classes with Reid Coffield, if he's doin an article on bolt guns, you can bet it is top notch - a really nice guy.

FYI,

Received the following reply from SGN:

"We have an annual issue that comes out once a year called the Shotgun News Treasury. This year will be our 4th annual edition with all of the "best of's" from the previous year. It is newsstand driven only and will go on sale on June 1, 2004."

They don't say whether the gunsmithing articles will be part of their 2004 treasury or (which ticks me off) why a regular subscriber has to go to a newsstand to buy a copy. Maybe I will ping them on that. They should at least offer us a chance to order by mail.
