Hmmm...

I have never had AR15 mag issues.

And I bought used AR15 mags.

I've got several of the HK Gen2 maritime mags (black follower with no white lettering - I believe your picture is of a Gen1) and I love 'em - absolutely reliable in my experience. I've never paid more than $40 for a new one - shop around a bit if you decide on the HKs.

Check out the Arfcom Equipment Exchange.

The highest price I've paid for an AR mags is $60 shipped for two straight 20 round colts, in the winter of 2004 (they got a little cheaper that fall). Never had a problem with them. Or the 30s I got at the same time that were a little cheaper.

I buy my AR15 magz online. All pre ban USGI Colt's. Never had an issue and never more expensive than $20 each for 20 & 30 rounders

I gotta tell ya

I bought two of the Polymer mags from Mag-Pul and so far, I am impressed. I have 2 f the HK mags as well ands they are fantastic, but pricey.

I have shot one of the Mag-pul mags and put about 100 rds through it so far and no hiccups whatsoever. Plus, they come with a neat little cover that is supposed to seal them and allow you to leave them laoded.

Kind of cool, IMO.

I just got my first Magpul magazines in stock yesterday. They look good. I'm taking one out to test for myself. So far I've stomped on it, chucked it around the office, and generally abused it.

I just bought a bunch of the Brownells metal mags to stock also, and they seem pretty well built, but haven't shot one yet.

I've ordered some of the Sig magazines to try out.

I'm not impressed with the HK mags. They've been issued to our local SF unit, and they've already broken a bunch of them. (welds crack). Plus they are dang heavy and expensive. Huh, mirrors my opinions of most HK products. :D

I’m also on the P-Mag bandwagon.

I ordered 10 and I just ran 200 rounds through one this weekend. Pretty good mags and at $14.15 ea delivered not too expensive.

Very smooth operation, easy break-down, and a neat dust cover.

Let us know where they can take hits and keep on functioning. My guess is that if you hit the spring, it's done.

:neener:

Grump, you haven't been around me while shooting. I have zero tolerence for malfing mags, and they get shot... and then burned. :p

Seriously, you can melt a milspec AR mag in a hot enough campfire.

When we got ours, guys were having stoppages within the first few mags through the guns on the flat range. Was eventually diagnosed (not sure if correct) as the feed lips getting bent when loading them with the standard USGI speed loader that comes with bandoleers of 5.56mm (and bracing stripper clip against metal table and then shoving mag into it). Seen pretty much all the same stoppages you get occasionally with aluminum USGI mags since then. Definitely nothing to get excited about or pay a premium for, in my opinion/experience.

Crap I just bought some HK mags from CDNN this morning. This is the first I've heard of them failing. I've been wanting to buy some reliable steel mags and thought these where as good as they get. I have plenty of aluminum mags but they seem more or less disposable. Are their any good steel mags out there? Does anyone have any experience with the British or Malaysian steel mags?

Your HK mags should be fine... I just don't see the point in paying for HK mags when I can buy 4 USGI mags or 3-4 PMAG's for the same amount of $$$ for one HK mag (not to mention the extra weight and size of the HK mags).

I have a bunch of USGI Okay 30s and Colt 20s. They work great but wear very quickly. They’re easy to dent and unreinforced aluminum feedlips can expand and/or bend out of alignment. Most of my mags are bare metal or brass colored from wear and cleaning. The grey powder coating comes off just with CLP. I like the idea of aluminum mags but they should have a stronger design and finish like G3 mags. The aluminum ones are reliable and cheap enough to stockpile: I just wanted a few steel ones to shoot with. I’ll pay more for a mag that lasts longer and is easier to clean as long as it’s reliable. These stories of cracked welds and feeding issues are shocking for $40 mags.

HK Mags are fine by me. My buddy was issued six when he deployed and he gave them to me. Only problem I had was that he carried them with 31, which bent the lip on the left side. A slight bend back and they run wonderfully. Heavier than the competition, but free and definitely better than the mags the Army issues, which are completely abused.

That said, I'll be buying magpul mags, especially when I get a Masada.

I thought the plastic PMAGs were the ones Magpul claimed weren’t for law enforcement or military use and had problems with their first run. The company makes some great stuff but I’m really hesitant about plastic AR mags after the Orlites I had. On the other hand my Bulgarian plastic mags have been reliable but that’s in an AK.

HK mags

I have several of these that have performed perfectly for me, and a couple of them were drug around the sandbox in the magwell of my M4. I'm not sure if I'd spend $50 on them, but they are very smooth to load. More smooth then the Magpul folllowers, although I doubt any more reliable :)

I am looking foreward to checking out the Pmags, but I have not seen any yet.

I have run a few hundred rounds through both Teflon CProducts and the newer 4/07 PMAGs without a single issue. I did have to dremel off a tiny part on the PMAG to make it fit my S&W MP15T and now they snap into the magwell perfectly. Very sturdy, and can be purchased for $15 or so each, much cheaper than $40+, and I'm willing to wager every bit as reliable if not more so due to the polymer construction.
