Well after much reading and a lot of thinking. I have taken the plung and bought my first two H&K's. I am the proud owner of the P2000 LEM in 9mm and USPc LEM in 45 ACP. I am hoping that you guys could give me some pointers on cleaning solutions that are not harmful to the finish, (these are my first none SS pistols) and what type of practice ammo: American Eagle, Blazer, Wolf, UMC, ETC.... I think I read not to use lead bullet, which I wouldn't, but what about the cases? I see what you all have been saying, H&K is one solid pistol and feels great in the hand. I will do a search on holster, I'm just looking for some pointers from you all the PRO's and thank you for all the input from past threads.

I use MPro7 to clean all my HK. To lube it, I use BreakFree CLP.
As for ammo, I do not shoot lead, it's a bitch to clean. Stick with factory new FMJ. Again, never had one single malfunction in my HK ;)

mineral spirits

how about mineral spirits, can that hurt the finish or any of the plastic internal parts????

I typically only use Breakfree CLP. Every once in a while I get some powder on my Walther P99 hard chromed slide that will only come off with Hoppes. But, usually, it's only the Breakfree.

As for ammo - I shoot CCI Blazer because it is so cheap for me. I'd stay away from Wolfe, but shoot anything else if I were U.

I just use Hoppe's and it's worked for me for years. I shoot mostly Winchester White Box or UMC green box stuff. Never had a problem with any of it.

OK but

I think I will just use Hopps. Can I buy it by the gallon?? Reason being the guide rod is one piece and the manual states I can not take it apart. So how do you clean it??? Manual also states that after 500 rds to clean it more than just a field stripping. What do you guys do with your pistols??

Finally, what about the Blazer CCI ammo in aluminum casings, are they OK to shoot in the gun?????

Thanks for all the great input, it reaLLY HELPS

H&K's are very durable pistols (I own USP/c's in 9 mm & .45), there's not much in the way of commecially available cleaning solvents that will bother them. Over the years I've used MPro7, Shooter's Choice, Hoppe's, Breakfree/CLP, etc. All worked fine (though some took more effort than others-), none bothered the finish. I use CLP or Miltec-1 for lube. Just wipe teh guide rod/spring down with solvent, wipe it off, and then wipe a bit of lube on itW. hile I certainly don't advocate abusing any firearm, H&K built their reputation on building tough, reliable firearms, they don't need to be 'babied'. Part of the reason they demand a premium price is [theoretically] they are better engineered, built & tested than other firearms intheir class. My own eperience seems to bear this out, YMMV.

I have also shot all kinds of factory ammo as well as some Georgia Arms 'factory reloads', with no problems, but NB, all have been JHP or FMJ -- no lead bullets. It's not that you can't shoot lead, but with teh polygonal rifling, it will foul badly, and as noted, is PITA to clean, and excessive leading can damage the barrel (same goes for Glocks and Kahrs), i.e. polygonal barrels don't like lead in the long run. CCI (Al cases) and Wolf (steel) won't hurt anything (though Wolf is kind of dirty), Mine have eaten everything I've fed them, and H&K's are +P rated, and will even tolerate a bit of .45 Super (so I'm told). Enjoy your new pistol, shoot the heck out of it.

LEM trigger

Can anybody tell me how the LEM trigger feels???

I have only had the chance to hold a few of the regular SA/DA variants and pull the trigger a few times... I dont think I have felt the LEM trigger. Im assuming it is basically a longer multiple stage DA trigger pull like a glock or an XD?? any advantages besides it being "safer" for cops compared to the SA/DA variant?

I'm still on the quest for my perfect CCW and I am looking at either the P2000or the P2000SK. H&K guns seem to be made very well, they feel VERY ergonimical in your hand and i bet they would shoot well. The ambi-slide release is awesome too. I'm hoping to shoot one before i buy it, but any information on how the LEM trigger feels would be great.

P2000 or Sk

The LEM is way nicer than the DA/SA. It is a lite single action with double action if the ammo fails. The shot or pull are always the same helping the shooter to get use to constant pulls everytime. I find the LEM better than a standard SA/DA's single action.

As far as P2000 or the P2000SK, I felt the handle on the Sk was too small and I have little girly hands to begin with. The extra 1/2 inch for concealment doesn't mean anything to me but it sure feels better and shoots better with it.

It says that the LEM trigger can be tuned down to 5.5 lbs on their website, but for me id prefer something around 4-4.5lbs for day to day carry. Is it possible to get a really nice trigger with the LEM??

I was almost thinking about carrying the P2000 and not the SK. The P2000 is just about 1/2" longer than a glock 26/27 and exactly the same height as a glock w/ a +1 Pearce grip(according to specs from both manufacturers). The P2000 still seems like a good carry option.

I actually have never had a problem with wolf ammo. It has never jammed and i have not seen any noticeable damage to my gun's. The hk were great choice's. Especielly the p2000. I think i am going to pick one up soon. I have the uspc in a .40 and i love it. I also have the usp in 9mm. They are both excellent. The uspc is in ss and i use rem oil it has not damaged the finish and is great for cleaning up.

I guess it depends upon the individual, but I much prefer the DA/SA Hk trigger over the LEM. But I guess that's why they sell them both ways. :)

The HK Hostile environment finish is probably more corrosion resistant than SS. As far as cleaning solutions go, Shooters Choice for a bore solvent, FP10 or any good quality lube for lubrication, and synthetic safe gunscrubber to get the grit and grime out of the action. Break Free is OK if you a backpacking and trying to cut down on weight, but a product that is supposed to both be a solvent and a lubricant is not going to excell at either. It will suffice, but is not you BEST choice. You have two awesome pistols take care of them.

Not only is lead a pain to clean, it is DANGEROUS in HK pistols, the polygonal rifling will cause lead to build up and increase pressures. NEVER SHOOT LEAD IN HK OR GLOCK

Wolf in Steel cased Garbage

A lot of folks are anti Wolf, but I've never had any problems with it. I've fired several thousand rounds of it though various 1911's and Sigs with no problems.

Welcome to the HK Club!!!! You should go to the HK Pro Boards, where there is a lot of good info available as well.

I reload, and when I first got my HK’s, I would not shoot lead. However, after discussing this issue with lots of people who have shot in excess of 10,000 lead bullets thru their HK’s, I have shot lead. I have found that some brands of lead bullets lead the barrel, while some do not.

The hard and fast rules of shooting lead in HK polygonal barrels are:
Shoot only hard cast bullets, (19-24 Burnell Hardness)
Keep the velocities low
Scrub the lead after a low number of shots (between 50-200 depending on amount of leading)
Do not attempt to clean the barrel by shooting jacketed bullets after lead.

At the range, I check the barrel every 50 shots and scrub with the Big 45 Frontier metal cleaner when necessary. Scrubbing takes less than 30 seconds and your back in action. I have never fired more than 250 rounds before a complete cleaning of the weapon.

Ghostrider;

I've been shooting an H&K USPc for about 10 years now. Most of my shooting is done with my own reloads. I've gone to the copper-washed lead bullets such as Ranier or Berry for my reloading needs. No problems with many rounds over several years. I have used lead bullets, but with the low cost of the copper-washed, I see no need to continue to do so.

I load my practice stuff to match the combat ammo I carry with. Therefore I run 180 grain slugs at an approx 980 - 1000 fps. Never had a problem, don't expect to have any either.

Oh, and Hoppes #9 get it done too.

Congratulations on your new H&K pistols. They are awesome firearms.

I use Breakfree CLP for all my cleaning/lubing of my .45 USP. About half the rounds I put through it are CCI Blazer aluminums. Never had a single hiccup; and they are about as accurate as anything else.
