Hey, recently a coworker of mine offered to sell me his H&K USP Compact in .40 S&W as well as 400 rounds and a leather pancake holster for $800. I don't know a lot about H&K and was wondering if this was a good price.

I have the HK-USP-compact .45 and got it used a couple of years ago for about $550. The holster may or may not be a value depending on how you like to carry your pistol (OWB vs. IWB). For me the HK-USP line is overpriced with expensive mags ($50 or more each) and a terrible DA trigger (long, heavy and severely stacks before breaking compared to my SW 3rd gens, Berettas, Sigs, etc.). And even though it is listed as a "compact" it's still pretty big for a carry gun. I use mine mainly as a sidearm when out in the bush hunting for pigs. So for me $800 is too steep, maybe $600 max is what I'd offer. Good luck.

You can buy a brand new one for around $850-$875. Depends a bit on the holster but I wouldn't bite if it were me. I'd say offer him $600-ish unless the holster is something amazing.

EDIT: Ooops, missed the part about him having 400 rounds of ammo along with it. It would depend a bit on the ammo, I suppose. You can buy all the WWB .40 you want here for $38/100. All told if it's ball ammo (FMJ) that's almost $150 worth right there.

Ultimately it depends on how bad you want a .40. I'm not a big fan of the round but there's nothing really wrong with it. I like to run 9mm since it's cheaper and I have a lot of 9mms. But on the other hand, no matter how bad the ammo scare/panic there always seems to be .40 on the shelves. The recoil is a little snappy compared to a 9mm but in the HK it's not too bad. The USPc is a very nice sidearm! Opinions are like *********s I guess, but IMO HK is about as good as it gets. I CCW an HK almost every day.

I got a usp compact 45 as well about 5 years ago for $650 in excellent condition, so I'm going to say that's a little steep for an used one. You can get a brand new one for close to that price or even a p30 for $100 more which IMHO is a better gun than the usp series. With that said I love my usp compact and probably won't part with it.

Well, I really don't think you could genuinely say the gun is worth more than $600-$650 used (no matter how little used, used is used). If it has tritium night sights of new-ish manufacture then maybe a smidge more. Bud's has new ones listed at $771 at the moment.

As an HK fanboy I'm a bit hesitant to say the P30 is "better" than the USP/USPc. Different to be sure but both have their strengths. A USP compact is going to be just a bit smaller than a P30. I CCW a P30S quite a bit as well as mixing in a full sized USP, too.

The gun itself is usually around $600 if it's in good condition. The ammo price varies, depending on it's value, which could be reloads or high cost defensive ammo at 80 cents a round. If the ammo is worth $200, then the price is in line. If not, offer less and explain why.

A great gun by the way.

Excellent condition, name-brand leather, and 400 rounds? Assuming two mags and standard sights, I would offer $750. Add night sights and/or additional magazines and we might be talking about $800.

See police trade ins for $550-$600. Usually includes night sights. depends on if the ammo and holster make it worth it to you. For just the gun it would be too high.

$800 isn't bad for what you're getting I suppose. Buddy of mine bought a brand new HK USP .40 compact for $700 not even a year ago. It was the stainless steel slide version. Gorgeous pistol... He did a bunch of online research before finally getting lucky and finding it for that price. I applaud him... He took the last one that dealer had.

I shouldn't have said "better" as that's really a personal opinion and will vary from person to person, but however the p30 was designed to eliminate the few complaints of the usp series. Blocky slide and ergonomics are what come to mind. The usp could never feel as good in hand as a p30 and I'm sure most would agree as the many refer to the p30 as the most ergonomic handgun that exist. I personally wouldn't pay that much for a used usp when the newer p30 could be had for $100 more. The holster wouldn't really increase the value just because the op might not like the feel of it when worn and it could just get thrown in a drawer somewhere and not used. However if it's quality ammo that does sweeten the deal but extra mags would even be better as those go for over $50. If the op thinks it's worth it then it is. No matter what anybody else says, a deal or no deal is always personal

Time for a pic. ;) Mags are not $50. I've paid from $19 to $35, same as, if not les than most other major brands.

Thanks for the info guys. Just to add he says he has only fired 250 or so rounds through it, and 100 of the 400 are Hornady Critical Defense rounds. Also, the holster isn't anything too special from what he says.

Wow I can't find extra mags for my usp compact 45 anywhere for anything less than $50. Please share the source of these mags your getting for the cost of glock mags. Nice gun to.

A private gun would beat a police turn in! They usually have the snot shot out of 'em and/or tons of holster wear. Still serviceable of course. Man, I'd love to nab a stainless USP or USPc! Right now I have two USPs, a USPf9 and a USP45 Tactical. Also sold a regular USP45 to help finance my HK USC. So yeah, I'm an HK fanboy!:D

While the P30 does address the slab-sided ergos of the USP line it adds a couple minor "quirks" of its own, primarily a trigger that can kind of pinch your finger a bit. All in all the USP line is still awesome although for new money the P30 might be preferable if you could only have one HK gun.

To the OP, I'd certainly try to talk him down a bit but the gun is almost certainly gonna be a great one (unless he did some bad shade-tree gunsmith stuff, which should be readily apparent if you inspect it).

I would certainly want to field strip it real quick and look over the parts. Probably will be like new. The holster is probably a throw-away unless by some random chance you wind up liking it. Most of us that carry end up with a good sized box of holsters before we find the "right one" for our needs.

usp9,

As jjones45 mentioned let us know where you can get USP-c mags for $19 (not Promags). All the ones I've seen are $50 or more.

I have since sold off my V1 USPc 9mm, but reagarding the mag issue, I found factory 10 rounders were very reasonable, while the 13 rounders were going for twice the cost of the 10s. I aways found what I seemed to need on GB....

I did some really deep digging and found some websites that have factory mags for the compact 9 and 40 for around $35, but the mags I need for my 45c are $50 and above everywhere. If anyone knows where 45c mags are cheaper than $50 please let me know

My USP Compact 9mm has never failed to function perfectly. Bought it in about 1996 as I recall. Can't argue with that. Then you just have to decide how much that one is worth to you.
