I finally got my 622 out of lay-a-way. It took far too long (since Dec. 17) because of Christmas and an unexpected dental bill:( . I took it, looked it over and oiled it and off to the range we went.

I sat at the 15 yard (optimistic) station loaded it and fired for effect.... my groups (3") were going to the right about 2" and 3" low with a 6 O ' clock hold. I thought maybe it was how I held the small grips then I realized that the front sight was canted to the left!!! I did not have my usual range bag with me (with the needlenose pliers) so I shot it using Kentucky windage. The DA pull was about 15 lbs and the SA is at 5 lbs but manageable.

I shot about 75 rounds until the wind started to kick up (a cool front came through) and a group of 5 gangbangers came up to the 25 yard line with a pair of High Points. The young folks had a very cavalier attitude about range safety save one that had a bullet proof vest on :what: . My guess is he knows how his buddys shoot and I took it as a sign to vacate.

As for the H&R 622, I went home and cleaned it, corrected the front sight (at least it looks straight) and put it in my range bag for the next trip.

Here's a pic.

Neat little kit gun. I'f pick one up if the price was right. As for the bp vest,I've actually worn one when teaching totally new shooters a few times! The gangbangers were probably just copying 50cents style, I've seen him wearing one with nothing else on his torso while performing.

[maniacal laugh] Mwahahahaha! [/maniacal laugh]

Another convert!

Yep, I took mine out shooting again today. Not quite as good as my Bearcat, but still really darn accurate, and a fraction of the price. Considering that these fall into the Hi-Point and Lorcin price bracket, they're a heck of a buy. Solid steel, and solid engineering. Most sorry to see that H&R stopped building these, though it appears they still use the same tooling to make blank-firing guns. Is H&R owned by Marlin now? Is Marlin's lack of interest in handguns the reason for the 622's demise?

My shooting buddy put a few cylinders through it, and while poking out the empties with the cylinder pin, said "you know, this is about as simple a sixgun as you can build."

Which is exactly the appeal.

Congrats on your purchase. To all the rest: go forth and rescue H&R 622 kit guns from the dusty shelves!

MV Thanks again and I've been perusing the gun auctions and there are quite a few H&Rs for sale... now if I can find a Houston area FFL that will not charge a transfer fee equal to the price of the guns....

My holy grail is an H&R snub in .32 H&R. When the .32 H&R first came out I wanted one but could not find one and settled for a Ruger Single Six, 4 5/8" barrel :D . Unfortunately it was gone in a fit of trade fever :banghead: .

I bought one of the last H&R/NEF .22 LR swing-out versions, nickeled (I beleave it was a 722) with a 2 1/2" heavy barrel. It did not shoot as well as this little gem. It went towards a trade for a car (80 Camaro) with a doctored engine that blew one month after the trade:cuss:  . This current H&R is a keeper and it may have company.

That's the price you pay for failure to live in Austin:

Here in Austin, Spreadfire Arms and Waterhouse do $10 and $5.50 FFL transfers for THR members. Gotta find you a similar hook-up in Houston.

McBride's Guns in Austin had a nickel-plated 622 for $75. Thought about buying it, but the lockup wasn't as tight as on mine, and the plastic grips had reacted to some cleaning chemical and deteriorated. It was a cool older model though, with hammer-mounted firing pin.

Don't move here though, the traffic is about one car away from being pure gridlock, at which point the entire population will become foot-mobile. On second thought, move here anyway. Foot-mobile coeds are easier to chat up that coeds riding in their boyfriend's parent-bought SUV.

I almost lived (running back and forth) there I used to work for a community newspaper in Houston called (ironic) The Houston Sun. It had a sister pub in Austin (yeah The Austin Sun) The publisher's daughter and husband ran it while she went to UT. Love to go up to Mt. Bonnell. If all 6 numbers llined up on my Lotto tickets I would love to have a piece of the Hill Country (at current rates that amounts to one 75' X 100' lot:what: ).
