I’ve been extremely busy with work, school, girlfriend, etc and haven’t shot since November. I also haven’t seen my best friend and ex shooting buddy (married and has 4 kids so no more fun) since March and he met me at the gun club. I decided to load test rounds of RMR 124gr MW, 55gr Nosler Varmageddon BT for 223rem, 38spl 125gr RNFP and play around with my new savage mark II heavy barrel and bushnell rimfire scope. I purchased the rifle last year and had a lot of fun squirrel hunting with it but never got around to putting the 150yard target turrets on it. I told my buddy bring along his 22 and we would shoot wooden blocks off the berm at 100yards. He uses a small Rossi single shot with 4x scope and knocks em all down and starts all over again. My RMR testing went great and so did the 223rem testing. I also put 5 shots of Hornady Critical Defense 110gr FTX through my J frame and it shoots pretty well.

So, I get the 22 sighted in at 75yards per the scopes instructions and its shooting about 1/2''-1'' groups with Remington thunderbolts. I install the target turrets and my buddy says waste of time, not gonna work! I turn it to 100yards, put the rifle on the rest and send the first block flying. We spent the next hour hitting the blocks and starting all over again. I also got to see what the Noslers can do and I am very happy. You know I was always against 22lr and in 16yrs of owning firearms I just never felt a need for one until I started squirrel hunting with a guy who raises squirrel dogs. I have to say I had an absolute blast trying to hit those small 1x1 and 2x2 wooden blocks at 100yards. They would fall off onto the ground and we would try and make them jump. I also enjoyed seeing my buddy.

Nosler BT pic attached. I'm still not settled on that load. I think I can get it to shoot a hair tighter. Not bad for a savage axis huh?

Ya, as my kids are getting to the .22 age, Ive also rediscovered how fun they are. I went 20 years without one and now Ive got 10! :)Lol.

The Mark 2 Savage is a greatly underated and somewhat unknown plinker. Had one for a bit and shoulda kept it.

Most of my .22 rifles are old, old Marlins with a slightly less old Mossberg and an M1922 thrown in there.

Anytime you get to chill with a bud and some rimfires is a good day.:)

Hey there’s the targets. That’s pretty great groups. 100 yards? I would measure improvement in hairs also. You can’t ask for “much” better than that.

Yep-100yards. I have got that rifle and hot load of benchmark to put 5 through the same hole 2 separate times. I have some H335 left over I wanted to see what it did with that bullet. Not bad but my reloading OCD says no fliers. lol.

Note the sight-in groups in my avatar. Savage Axis in .223, 100 yards. 25.8 gr. BL-C(2), 55 gr. Hornady FMJ, CCI 400, LC 09 brass, 2.23"OAL. Sounds like a much-needed fun day at the range!
I'm hitting the Trap range today to work with my new 1100 Competition before the High School team kids get there. Then I stop shooting and start coaching.
