in Canada, Martin Sheen said recently: “Every time I cross this border, I feel like I’ve left the land of lunatics. You are not armed and dangerous. You do not shoot each other. I always feel a bit more human when I come here.â€

Hollywood vs. "Stupid" America
By Howard Mortman
MSNBC.com | November 13, 2003

If you’re an American, chances are there’s a celebrity who thinks you’re dumb. Maybe even stupid. Or an idiot. Or something worse, which we can’t print here.

Yes, show a celebrity an American, and that celebrity will show you an ignoramus.

Too sweeping a statement? Perhaps. But what about this Michael Moore screed about Americans in the London Mirror earlier this month? “They are possibly the dumbest people on the planet. ...We Americans suffer from an enforced ignorance. We don’t know about anything that’s happening outside our country. Our stupidity is embarrassing.â€

Until Michael Moore pointed it out, you probably didn’t know how embarrassingly stupid you are. In fact, you probably have so little intelligence you didn’t know that Moore isn’t the only celebrity who thinks you’re dumb. Indeed, Moore has colleagues in the celebrity kingdom who think the same thing.

So put on your well-worn dunce cap and check out what other celebrities say about your intelligence. And if the celebrities are correct in their analysis, you’re moving your lips as you read this.

Johnny Depp said a few months back, “America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you.†(Depp later claimed he was quoted out of context and offered: “I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it. It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it.†But still, we’re like dumb puppies?)

Ted Turner once said this about television-watchers: “The United States has got some of the dumbest people in the world. I want you to know that; we know that.â€

JANE SOUNDS OFF, TOO

Speaking of Ted Turner, Jane Fonda was in Canada this past April and said: “I don’t know if a country where the people are so ignorant of reality and of history, if you can call that a free world.â€

Also in Canada, Martin Sheen said recently: “Every time I cross this border, I feel like I’ve left the land of lunatics. You are not armed and dangerous. You do not shoot each other. I always feel a bit more human when I come here.â€

Lunatics, ignorant people, dummies — even dumb puppies. Yes, we got ’em all here.

Where does this superior celebrity intellect come from? It’s actually part of a larger phenomenon, one involving the president. Celebrities sneer at President Bush’s intelligence. And then they think we’re all the same, just dumb Bush-boosters

For evidence of how much smarter celebrities think they are than the president, we start again with super-smart guy Michael Moore. A year ago, he told the London Mirror (he loves those British papers), “I really do believe Bush is dumber than s@?*. What’s odd about all this is that Blair is a smart guy. What’s he doing hanging out with a dumb guy? Back at school if you were smart, you hung out with the other kids that were smart.â€

Sticking with the European press, earlier this year Larry Hagman told a German newspaper that Bush was a “sad figure: not too well-educated, who doesn’t get out of America much.†And Sheen told the BBC after Bush became president: “George W. Bush is like a bad comic working the crowd. A moron, if you’ll pardon the expression.â€

I’m not sure which expression we should be pardoning there, mind you. Maybe it’s because I’m a moron-American (we’re such a hyphenated nation these days).

But the hits continue. In April, Edward Norton said of Bush: “As an actor, I know in my mind, watching him, what a low-quality mind he has.†And during the 2000 campaign, Cher said, “I don’t like Bush. I don’t trust him. I don’t like his record. He’s stupid. He’s lazy.â€

SNAP OUT OF IT!

Yikes! Stupid and lazy? C’mon, Cher! Snap out of it!

Also during the 2000 campaign, Rob Reiner said, “We have the single most unqualified man running for president in our lifetime. I’m not making this up! I’m not making this up! The man has no experience, and worse than that, he has no intellectual curiosity.†Gee, he makes Bush sound like a, well, like a meathead.

No celebrity said it smarter than Sandra Bernhard. She asserted her intelligence and belittled Bush at the same time to the Washington Post in March 2002: “I’m an intelligent person from America. I was born in Michigan and raised in Arizona, and while I do reside in New York, I travel the country extensively. Any thinking person who lives in the world would be disurbed at what’s going on right now. I think Bush is amateurish and self-serving, and, frankly, it’s disgusting.â€

I would offer a retort to Bernhard, but I can’t think of anything smart to say. I’ve never been to Michigan.

It should not be surprising anymore of the venom that comes from the actors and artists in this country.

They make their living playing multiple personalities of which many should be actually treated for. Very few are educated enough to make intelligent comments or thoughts.

I used to get mad and then realized that when they are shouting from their soap boxes, they are just displaying the discomfort from the pole I work so hard to shove up people's butts like this.

Keep salivating, it lets me know my work is not in vain.

Maybe he should stay in Canada...if he feels safer..

This is not really surprising...MSNBC had a great article on how most of the more liberal actors think we are a bunch of morons....

Hillary made it pretty clear during the health care debate that the Dems don't think we can care for ourselves either
:fire:

Why and how did anyone get the impression that GW Bush is stupid? The man has a Harvard MBA and that - in the business world - gets the same respect as a PhD from MIT does in the science and engineering worlds. You don't get an MBA from Harvard by being stupid and you can't just buy one either no matter how much money you've got.

As for Hollywood's intelligence - those guys and gals have let their celebrity go to their heads. Most are just HS graduates and some not even that. I'll match IQ's and education against anyone of theirs' anytime and any day.

And to have a traitorous dog, softcore porn queen like Jane Fonda tell the American people they are dumb - that's going just a bit to far.

At least one guy in the media recognized the problem with Hollywood - kudos to him.

Another does of Hollyweird. There was a time when charges would be brought against persons acting in a traitorous or seditious manner. Treason and sedition are high crimes. It shows how far we have come. The left's ideology has been shown to be intelectually bankrupt. The 40 year experiment with the war on poverty is an abject failure, for example. The leftist politicians are losing their sway and are no longer appealing except in the most urban environmenta. The more we "stupid" Americans act to preserve our rights, our heritage and our traditions, the more the left feels that they are losing ground for which they fought for, and which they deem hallow. This change is manifested in the lack of civility in debate, the name calling, the false assertions. The pols can no longer carry the tune, so the Hollyweird actors are spreading the message. I think it is the final gasping of a corrupt order.

People think GW Bush is stupid becuase he isn't photogenic and seems a little camera shy. Entertainers are, by nature, photogenic, good looking and charismatic (well most are).

In the words of Brad Pitt, "Who cares what I think, I'm a [expl deleted] actor."

There was an email making the rounds awhile back that had the resume's and educational back ground of the top people in the Bush cabinet, and compared them to the education and reseumes of the "Hollywood crowd".

It put it all in perspective.

"Who's Smarter, Hollywood Types or Bush and Cabinet?(A reprint)"

Posted by Arthur Bruzzone
Saturday, March 29, 2003

Editor's Note: By popular demand we are bringing back the piece on relative intelligence of the Hollywood types and the Bush Cabinet.

Who's Smarter?
by Cindy Osborne

The Hollywood group is at it again. Holding anti-war rallies, screaming about the Bush administration, running ads in major newspapers, defaming the president and his cabinet every chance they get, to anyone and everyone who will listen. They publicly defile them and call them names like ''stupid,'' ''morons,'' and ''idiots.''

So, just how ignorant are these people who are running the country? Let's look at the biographies of these ''stupid,'' ''ignorant,'' ''moronic'' leaders, and then at the celebrities who are castigating them:

President George W. Bush: Received a bachelor's degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102 pilot for the Texas Air National Guard. He began his career in the oil and gas business in Midland in 1975 and worked in the energy industry until 1986. He was elected governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the vote. In a historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas governor to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998, winning 68.6 percent of the vote.

Vice President Dick Cheney earned a B.A. in 1965 and a M.A. in 1966, both in political science. Two years later, he won an American Political Science Association congressional fellowship. One of Vice President Cheney's primary duties is to share with individuals, members of Congress, and foreign leaders, President Bush's vision to strengthen our economy, secure our homeland, and win the War on Terrorism. In his official role as president of the Senate, Vice President Cheney regularly goes to Capitol Hill to meet with senators and members of the House of Representatives to work on the administration's legislative goals.

Secretary of State Colin Powell was educated in the New York City public schools, graduating from the City College of New York (CCNY), where he earned a bachelor's degree in geology. He also participated in ROTC at CCNY and received a commission as an army second lieutenant upon graduation in June 1958. His further academic achievements include a master of business administration degree from George Washington University. Secretary Powell is the recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations. Secretary Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. Several schools and other institutions have been named in his honor and he holds honorary degrees from universities and colleges across the country.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld: attended Princeton University on Scholarship (AB, 1954) and served in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as a Naval Aviator; congressional assistant to Rep. Robert Griffin (R-MI), 1957-59; U.S. Representative, Illinois, 1962-69; assistant to the president, director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, director of the Cost of Living Council, 1969-74; U.S. ambassador to NATO, 1973-74; head of Presidential Transition Team, 1974; assistant to the president, director of White House Office of Operations, White House chief of staff, 1974-77; secretary of defense, 1975-77

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge was raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry Staff Sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his law degree and was in private practice before becoming assistant district attorney in Erie County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly re-elected six times.

National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice earned her bachelor's degree in political science, Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her master's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981.

She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded honorary doctorates from Morehouse College in 1991, the University of Alabama in 1994, and the University of Notre Dame in 1995. Her books include Germany Unified and Europe Transformed (1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era (1986) with Alexander Dallin, and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army (1984). She was a member of the boards of directors for the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan, and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. In addition, her past board service has encompassed such organizations as Transamerica Corporation, Hewlett Packard, the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rand Corporation, the National Council for Soviet and East European Studies, the Mid-Peninsula Urban Coalition, and KQED, public broadcasting for San Francisco.

So who are these celebrities? What is their education? What is their experience in affairs of State or in National Security? While I will defend to the death their right to express their opinions, I think that if they are going to call into question the intelligence of our leaders, we should also have all the facts on their educations and background:

Every time you leave the US, Mr. [ahem] Sheen, I feel America shift a bit less left.

Any thinking person who lives in the world would be disturbed at what’s going on right now. I think Bush is amateurish and self-serving, and, frankly, it’s disgusting.â€

As someone who is from Michigan, I want to say that I am ashamed that she is from Michigan. :barf:

Michael Moore is right. Americans are monumentally stupid. In fact, American stupidity is equaled only by the rank idiocy of the rest of the world.

~G. Fink

I always feel a bit more human when I come here.â€
That explains a lot. You see, I have never seen Mr. Sheen in Canada. I have only seen him in the U.S. and I always thought that he was a little less than human when he was here. :D :D

There may be some back handed honesty here - these "celebrities" MUST know, in their own hearts, what monumental frauds and fools they are. They've done nothing to be 'celebrated' for; thus those who find them attractive or admirable must be even stupider than they are.

The best evidence of American stupidity is that Americans keep giving these people time and money. Hard to disagree...

I agree w/ tcdrennen.

Americans must be stupid to have such admiration for and put stock in the opinions of celebrities.

Where else would anyone come up with the line "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV"?

SteveS
As someone who is from Michigan, I want to say that I am ashamed that she is from Michigan.
Just be happy that she's "from" Michigan (meaning she's no longer residing here).
Just be happy that nobody mentioned that Michael Moor-on (oops! Not very High Road was it?) is from Mi.
M & M, aka Michelle Mathers (darn, there it goes again)
Madunga (it's like Tourette's Syndrome!! I can't stop!!!)

Excellent post ReadyontheRight.

These 'actors' accusing Bush of stupidity is scandal. Dummies calling the educated people, dumb. Yep.

I am a firm believer in higher education, but to be fair, there are many people who have done OK without a university diploma: the machinist, the carpenter, etc....even Bill Gates. My point is that Degree does not always + SUCCESSS.

That said, however, I hope we can all agree that the persons responsible for US foreign policy and domestic policy do have experience and advanced degrees. I know that getting mine did expand my noodle and honed critical thinking, which I believe is lacking almost everywhere today.

For these phonies to lecture us in foreign policy and the economy is too much for me:barf: ....I would almost vote for "some form of reasonable mouth control" (censorship). BTW "it is for the children." I can not deny them their right to speak freely and assemble. I wish they would stop denying my right to defend myself the way I see fit.:fire:

There is some truth to their statements. Unfortunately the vast majority of Americans are ignorant of the world outside the U.S.A.( myself included). I have a B.A. degree, watch the news on all three major networks(don't have cable or satellite) and play on the net. I donot read a major newspaper or news magazine. I really donot know what goes on in Europe, Asia, etc. Ask yourself are you truely well informed about what happens outside of our great country. Personally I still waiting for Alec Baldwin ,etc to leave the counrty like they said they would if G.W. was elected. Nomex on, flame away.

Bob

Sandra managed to insult 3 states in one breath..

Impressive.

College dropout wanna be actors/actresses running the world.. Mr. Sheen needs to stay in canada and ruin that country instead of America..:barf:
