Watchin' a movie, "Comanchero", last night. The Duke is supposed to be a Texas Ranger. Okay, part way into the movie, they explain that he rode with Sam Houston at San Jacinto, says it was "4 years ago". They're talking about the Replublic of Texas and Sam Houston is the president now. Okay, that puts the year at 1840. These cats were running around having shoot outs with '73 Winchesters and '73 Colt SAAs. Later in the movie, they come upon the bad guy camp and Wayne is posing as a gun runner. He pops open a box and prolaims "brand new Winchester '73s!" I finally turned it off.:banghead:

I guess you had to totally ignore history to watch these old movies????

Its the movies. If they were all historically accurate, they'd be boring.

In a scene from 'Fort Apache', Ward Bond, as Sgt Quincannon, handed to Henry Fonda ( Colonel Tuesday) a cocked single action revolver butt first.

Other than 'The Shootist', (the book was better than the movie), my favorite Duke film was 'Red River'.

Yes, yes, yes, just don't wast my time with the facts!!!
We are currently getting a series called Peacemakers here with Tom Berringer as a sheriff and another guy as a forensic expert solving all the crimes. Can't beleive the lack of recoil on his gun but at lease it only seems to hold 6 shots

Have you ever seen the early 1900s film "Birth of a Nation?"

It's basically an apologetic for the Ku Klux Klan.

But in all the Civil War battle scenes, you can see the troops feverishly working the bolts on their bolt-action battle rifles.

I seem to remember that a film called 'The Red Badge of Courage', Audi Murphy, looked a bit factual - still, Hollywood never did let the facts get in the way of a good story :banghead:

I caught the achronisity of Comancheros when the movie first came out. theyve gotten a lot better in recent decades but the station manager in the series "Young Riders" had a Remington New Model army with a texas rangers badge in the grip that he had carried at the alamo.

Heck, Red River, by the great Howard Hawks, which took place around 1840 or so had Duke with a SAA and a Winchester '92, as I recall.

Yea, You just gotta look past the facts. I think Commencheros(sp) was a poor movie. I like Red River, Hondo, The Searchers. For movies that fit Wayne the best were, True Grit and Rooster Cogburn. Such great lines in those two! But there a lots of guns that do not fit the times. I have just ordered Death Hunt on dvd from Best Buy. Only ten dollars. FYI, "Roughriders", the TNT original starring Tom Berringer as TR will be available on DVD on May 30th. We have just about worn out this on VHS, which was a hard copy to find. Peace

True grit was okay. I went to see it in the theater. But, I gotta say, Glen Cambell was a sorry excuse for an actor if ever I saw! He got a little better toward the end of the movie, but he still was no Heston.

Just watched Red River last night, it started in 1851, and then moved around 14 years into the future. During the 1851 period I seen what looked like an 1858 model, so go figure. Hey its the movies, so they can do what they want.
