Hakim Rifle Questions

I recently bought a Hakim rifle that I found in a local shop for $300. The rifle's in great shape except that it's missing the front barrel band/bayonet lug. I'm not worried about it as it's not necessary for the gun to function, but it would be nice to find something to put on there. Does anyone know of a source for Hakim parts? Numrich is sold out. Would the front band from an AG-42 Ljungman work? If nothing else, I have a barrel band from an Enfield musket that looks like it might work, but I'm open to any suggestions.

Also, if anyone else has any good tips for a new Hakim owner, feel free to post them here (gas adjustment, not getting fingers caught in the action, etc).

Have a care when you mess with the safety and rack the action, it'll bite hard. A gas system wrench can be made easily from a cheap nut-driver by grinding out a notch in it. I don't know if the front band from a Ljungman will work, but a Swedish bayonet can be modified to work on a Hakim so it's possible.

For sure! When I found it in the store, they had the action open but the safety switched off...they're lucky someone unfamiliar with the design didn't mess around with the action and hurt themselves.

I sure thought so. I haven't seen a Hakim go for $300 in a long time so I jumped at the chance, even with the missing the barrel band. I think I'm going to have to find something that just works for now in the role and keep my eyes out for parts at a gunshow or something. I won't be able to make a range trip for a few weeks, but if everything works out with the gun in firing, then I defintely did well.

You might try Sarco for the barrel band. I think they have some Hakim parts so maybe they have that.

Be sure to check headspace before you shoot it and DO NOT use Turkish surplus ammo.

Unfortunately Sarco and Numrich are both sold out of the parts I need. They were good suggestions (those were the first places I looked).

DO NOT use Turkish surplus ammo.

What's the thinking behind this? I know the Turkish stuff is hotter than normal, but that seems like the perfect time to use the handy-dandy gas adjustment system. This is purely hypothetical as I don't have any Turkish surplus but am curious anyways. I still have a good bit of Romanian surplus.

Turkish is extremely hot (I believe the powder in that old ammo is no longer stable) and the type of action the hakim uses, a tilting bolt is not the strongest. The action was originally designed around a 6.5x55 cartridge.
I shot my hakim with commercial 8x57 ammo, no problem, I shot it with handloaded 8x57mm ammo, no problem. I even shot it with surplus ammo from South America, no problem. THE VERY FIRST SHOT with Turkish 8x57mm ammo .............. IT BLEW THE FREAKIN RIFLE UP And that ain't no <deleted>. Shattered the stock, blew the magazine to smithereens, <deleted> flyin everywhere and speckled my face with tiny shrapnel and hot powder. Glad I had glasses on.
