I own a Colt 1903 32 caliber Pocket Pistol which has a half cock feature on the hammer. Can someone please tell me how to engage this half cock with a round in the chamber. Also, how can I go from half cock to full cock without ejecting the chambered round? The slide must be moved all the way back to chamber a round. This will fully cock the pistol.

Dennis-Like your answer!! I think I have figured the half cock out. This pistol is not intended to be CARRIED in half cock. It is carried in full cock and the half cock catches the hammer before it can strike the firing pin should it be dislodged from the full cock position. Is this right?

The half-cock feature (actually a ledge not a notch) was added to the Colt Pocket Model in-or-around 1922, at serial number 422000 (32) and 66000 (380). It's sole purpose was to prevent a cocked hammer from following down onto a loaded chamber, if the sear - for whatever reason failed to hold it.

IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A CARRY POSITION WHEN THE CHAMBER IS LOADED.

To check it's function:

1. Remove the magazine. If your pistol has a magazine disconnect safety, unload the magazine. Pull back the slide and inspect the chamber to insure it is unloaded. Put the loose cartridges someplace where they cannot unintentionally be loaded into the pistol.

2. With the slide in battery, and the unloaded magazine inserted, notice that the safety lock (manual safety) cannot be engaged, and the grip safety is in the "OFF" position.

3. Pull the slide backwards about 3/16" to 1/4". You should hear a "click." and you can now engage the safety lock, and the grip safety has popped out to the "ON" position. Now lower the slide on an empty chamber. If you wish you can reload the magazine and insert it. BUT DO NOT CYCLE THE SLIDE AND LOAD THE CHAMBER UNLESS THAT IS YOUR INTENTION. IF YOU DO SO BE SURE THE SAFETY LOCK IS PLACED "ON".

The pistol should be carried with the chamber and magazine loaded, and the safety lock engaged.

or:

With the chamber empty, the magazine loaded, and the safety lock either "ON" or "OFF", depending on the user's preference.

Can't thank you enough Old Fluff! I was pretty sure that was the purpose of half cock but wasn't certain. You have cleared this question up completely for me. Thanks again.

Never run across anybody trying to carry a 1903 in a half-cock position before. :)
The problem, besides what everybody else said, is that it can't be done & was never intended to be done. :D

There was once a fad of Internet Tacticians wanting to carry Glocks with the striker down on a loaded chamber, too. You have to disassemble the gun and reassemble it with a round in the chamber, but you can get there. Is it safe? No. Is it a useful degree of readiness? No. But if you are an Internet Tactician, there are other priorities.

The sole and only reason for the "shelf" was to prevent a loaded pistol with the safety OFF from firing if dropped due to the sear jarring out of the full cock notch. Carrying a pistol as Fuff sets it up would be pointless; even if the chamber were loaded, the only way the gun could be fired would be to rack the slide (ejecting the chambered round) and if you have to do that, you might as well leave the chamber empty.

That's the way I read it the first time too.

Then, on re-reading it I see he's talking about testing of the feature as a safety backup not as a method of safe carry.

"IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A CARRY POSITION WHEN THE CHAMBER IS LOADED."

The initial flaw lies in the OP title using the words: "half cock".
