Hand loads for self defense?

I live in a very blue state. The last thing I want to happen is to fall victim to the knock out game and blast some kid as he's putting the boots to me only to read this headline the next day.

"Gun wielding nationalist shoots unarmed youth with custom made ammo."

You don't have to live in a blue state, it only takes a blue judge.

I am trying to remember what factory ammo I have purchased outside of rimfire, 6.8spc, and 30 carbine. The 6.8 I am buying to build brass inventory as loaded ammo is as cheap as empty brass. The 30 carbine I just recently bought. Dies are on their way.

That an overzealous prosecutor will use your handloads against you in court is an interesting theory that is as of yet unproven. The cases presented as examples are hardly even relevant.

How would they even know if you don't tell them? If I handload Gold Dot bullets back into Speer brass, how would they know the difference? If you have handloading equipment in your home, how can they prove you did or did not use factory ammo? How is a 180gr Gold Dot fired from a handloaded cartridge deadlier than one fired from a factory cartridge? IMHO, it's pure nonsense.

I usually carry factory ammo because I don't handload for .380, 9mm or .45ACP at all. Not for fear of prosecution.

IIRC, canister gun powders we use are sold with microscopic markers to indicate powder origin location, manufacture date, etc.

And we all know ammunition manufacturers do not use "canister" powders that we use ... ;)

CraigC, thanks for the article.

As to OP, Walkalong and many others posted already, use of reloads for defensive rounds has already been discussed ad nauseam in countless threads.

IIRC, there has not been a single case where simple use of reloads changed the outcome of the case. So if all I had was 200 gr SWC target loads in my 1911 to protect my life, I won't hesitate to use them to defend my life or lives of my family.

But knowing that my entire reloading equipment and components could be taken by police as evidence for the duration of the investigation/court case, which could last years, I choose to use factory ammunition so police could take a box of ammunition instead of my reloading stuff - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/hand-loads-for-self-defense.831563/#post-10740170
