I've started to have a wonderful problem lately. My handgun count is beginning to exceed the holding capacity of my safe. Right now, it's like some kind of sick jig-saw puzzle to get them all laying down without touching. I'm not looking for advice like, "Get another safe." I would just like to see (pictures) how some of you solve this problem at home. I'm probably going to end up crafting some sort of rack to stand them up in out of wood. Anybody have building plans for a small project like this? Thanks in advance.

several manufacturers offer options where you can put handguns on the inside of the door of the safe.
for example....

Also, you can get pre-made racks from them too.

My personal favorite is this offering from Ft. Knox

I buy gun rugs and just stack them one on top of the other on the shelfs and in between the rifle and shotgun barrels.

I actually use a binder (not folder, they are two narrow) divider I found in the office supplies at my local store.

Works great....recently went back to get more and the were not selling them anymore.

I ended up buying them online....think I paid around $8 each and they hold 5 guns.

An inexpensive solution that works very well, as well as the high priced special made racks, is a Pot Lid Holder. They are made of vinyl coated heavy guage wire, like a dish drainer. I bought mine at Lowes for about $10.00. It is 12" long and holds 9 guns very easily. You can put a 10th at the end of the rack. Any store that sells kitchenware should have them.

I agree with Steve C. Using gun rugs allows a safe to hold a maximum number of handguns.

Racks are nice, but rugs take up less room AND allow you to use every nook.

That being said, I have racks in my safe. I like the way the guns are displayed on racks.

Can you hang them on the door? Johnson Safes are set up for this.

Pegboard and plastic hooks let me hang about 25 (IIRC) of them on the door. The rest on in a dedicated pistol safe or on shelves above the long guns.

Here's another idea which I throw out: A buddy of mine in Indy did something different. You know that black thick foam stuff that is sold in art and hobby stores? He cut it in half the length of the gun safe shelf and then cut notches in it for pistols. He was able to put two rows on his shelves. It's a cheap easy way to cram a bunch of pistols on a shelf as the pistols are very close together but not touching. You can put a layer of foam down and then stack another two rows on top of those as long as you have room vertically.

Sorry I'm late lol

Here's a repost with all the info together.

For the handguns on the door I used a type of spool pegs, I bought most of them years ago from an arts and crafts store, if I remember right, at the time they came in a little plastic bag with 12 or so per bag and they didn’t cost much, not long ago I went to buy a few more and they came in a little bag of 3 for $0.99.

My safe has a backing plate behind the fire liner on the door so pegs can be screwed in (there was even a factory peg kit but I didn’t like them), the pegs are spaced for each handgun, I used washers behind some to space them out as needed with certain handguns and on a few I cut the lip of the spool off in some places to clear the front of the trigger guard, each handgun has to be lifted up from the muzzle then pulled out.
Some of the handguns have been on the door for 8 years and I have yet to have any problems with wear on the pistols or have any fall off, they fit very solid.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

The handgun rack on the top shelf is also homemade, It took about two hours to build from two 4’ long x 4” wide boards.

I wanted it to be a wide as the interior of my safe would allow (28” wide), I then did the math on how many I handguns I could put in the rack evenly spaced without them being to close together.

Damn it I just hate you guys.:D Gixerman you really suck.:D Primersinmyshoe where did you those handgun racks? Those will fit my safe quite nicely. I hate to see these threads. It's like leaving the car dealership with your brand new pickup just to pull up to a stoplight with a hummer beside you full of bikini wearing fine women, music blaring, hollering (paar-tay'). Did I mention they were towing a 25 ' twin tunnel hull? Did I mention I just hate some of you guys. Call it penis envy

I recently bought a gunsafe...

The interior provided wastes a lot of space. (I'm not griping, they gave me what I ordered, I just didn't know at the time.)

So I'm in the process of making a new interior, essentially shelves that are not as deep between levels. I don't need 18 inches from shelf to shelf to store handguns. And I'm making some handgun racks similar to Primersinmyshoe's set up.

Now that I mention it, I redid the rifle stacking arrangement as well. As soon as I reload the software for the scanner and get some pictures developed (or break down and buy a digital camera) I'll post a photo essay.

Handguns are great for spreading all over the house. No need to keep them all in one safe.

I like the small finger combo safes that can hold two pistols each. Start with one per floor of your house and you can eventually expand to one for every room. You can attach them under counters, against walls, under the bed, just about anywhere! :)

Building your own pistol rack.

Hey Gixerman1000, how wide is that handgun rack, how far apart are the centers of the notches, and how wide are the notches? I have a wide range of pistols and want to keep them neat in my new safe. Thanks.
