Whether a "first time" buyer gets a 1911 or not....it will still be around for a very long time

I think (don't ask for proof because I have none) with the case of most first time gun buyers, they're not shopping in the price range that the majority of 1911's sell at. Gun purchases are part of the budget for some of us. For others, guns are bought with what's left of their budget after everything else.
