Anybody have experience with this? I am working up a pig load. I've started with a load listed as near max in the hornady manual, 13.0grs of 296 under a 180gr hornady jhp xtp seated down to the first crimp groove from the bullet tip. OAL is 1.580. RP nickel cases, WW standard small pistol primers. Anyone got any other loads for this type bullet? How about 180 grain lead bullet loads? Regards to all. Lawboy.

Check Handloads.com. They've got several 180gr loads there.

I've only used Lil'Gun for 180gr loads. Make sure to read the notes, some of the loads in that range were designed for strong .357's (Redhawk, GP-100) so they wouldn't be a wise thing for a snub ;-)

Of course, if you're pig-hunting..:D

Lawboy,

My first suggestion would be to start using a magnum primer with 296 or H110. My second suggestion would be to use non-nickle cases from starline or federal. My experience with Remington cases is that they are thinner and weaker than the two that I mentioned.

Third and most importantly, Talk with WESHOOT2 if he answers your post. He does this for a living.

Thanks all. I am currently reading Paco's gems over on sixgunner.com. I have a decent supply of starline nickel and plain brass, and will give it a try. I'll check out handloader.com shortly as well. Regards. Lawboy.

I think that you are on the right track with the load that you mentioned. I second the thought of moving to magnum primers with 296/H110. I have found peace and love in a 180gr bullet over 15.0 H110/296. 1270fps from my 4" GP-100 and very accurate.

What is the oal of your cartridges with the 15.0 grain load? cast bullets or jacketed?

MY HEARING MUST BE GETTING BETTER...............

Some powder choices for the 180's (we ain't talkin' squibs here folks): 3N37, AA9, H110, W296, N110.

If I were limited to ONLY ONE for 180g wristwrenchers it'd be N110.

But then I live in Finland, er, Vermont.

Frankly, anything that can get your bullet going 1200fps is fine; tweak for accuracy.
But do it through a Ruger............. :neener:

(Also look on Beartooth Bullets and Cast Performance web pages for load data.)

1200 schmelvehundred... 1400plus.. definately only in a ruger ;-)

I don't know how I managed to do it, but about a year ago, I managed to overcharge ONE cartridge in a run of 50. That one overcharge hit 1460fps (air temp was ~60 degrees F) out of my 4" GP100. All of the other rounds from that batch were within 10fps of 1200. Dunno what happened, it wasn't the first or the last load and it never happened before or since. I wish I knew what the charge level was so I could pick a happy medium between it and my 1200fps load. BTW, the gun is fine :D

The bullet was Remington's SJ-HP 180gr. Primers were Federal's small pistol magnum. Brass was mixed, but trimmed to the same length (about 1/16" shorter than standard to compensate for the longer bullet).

I can consistantly hit that speed (a bit of SD of course). Not even an odd load, Hodgdon lists 15gr Lil'gun, 1422fps as a standard load.

With the GP, we can do better..

Is that out of a long pressure barrel or a 4" revolver barrel. Most of the stats I've seen in reloading guides are with a long pressure barrel. I wouldn't mind working upwards a bit from 1200, but I just don't have the time right now.

1460 didn't even recoil much harder. It did sound different. I didn't know exactly what happened until I check the chrono. A friend at camp about 400yds away said he heard the difference! :what:

The load that I use most is a Cast Performance bullet (hardcast WFN) and the OAL is 1.575"

When I use this load with the Rem SJHP or the 180XTP, I get a 40fps drop in velocity.
